Default Retro VHS Style DVD Covers

A while ago I made these to match their VHS counter-part. Some are better than others, but I tried to stay as close to the VHS as possible. Most differences are back images.

OOPS............Guess I shouldn't have posted these here since they are DVD's.

A WIP in the very early stages for the fun Lee Marvin-Roger Moore action drama"Shout at the Devil" (based on the Wilbur Smith novel) coming to Blu-ray in September:

And yes, the legals do need to be worked. The template fill text are in the space right now.

And "Dragonslayer" is back on:

Is there any more image of the ship at the bottom? I only ask because I feel the cropping of the bottom doesn't sit well with all the empty black on top. If you can change the title treatment to a single line and bring the artwork up to include the full ship, I think that would balance it out.

Drawing smoke by hand, eh? I've never got the hang of fancy brushes in photoshop. I know people use them to draw flames, folds/creases etc. but I am never satisfied with the results. Instead I use photos of the real thing and manipulate them to fit. I've used smoke on a lot of my covers and it's all photo-based. The process does have its limitations, so I wish I could do it the way you've done it. I'd love to hear you describe the process.

Keep truckin'
Thanks for the kind words. I was able to shrink the image just a little bit to make the bottom of the ship visible. I'll probably keep the logo at 2 lines, though, otherwise I would have to shrink it too much to make it fit.

Drawing the smoke is actually pretty easy. All you have to do is use the pencil tool to draw the basic shape in white (you don't have to worry about rough edges or anything). Create a black layer underneath that one. Then, create a new layer above the white one. Apply the clouds filter. Then, go to the white layer and use the gaussian blur filter. Then go to the clouds layer and use the "difference clouds" filter. Keep doing it until you like what you see. Then I merge those layers and copy it. Hit undo until the layers aren't merged. Paste the layer you copied and hide it. Then, use the difference clouds filter again. Keep repeating this proccess of pasting the new layers (I usually go up to about 6 layers). Then blend them all together. I change the opacity of each layer to 1% and merge them, then just duplicate that layer 4 or 5 times, and merge those, then duplicate that layer and merge, until the layer is solid. I then use the final image as a layer mask and choose what color I want the smoke to be. It sounds a lot more complicated than it really is.

Some customs from Nissan, I wanted to have my Dark Knight Returns Blu-Rays feature the covers from the comics they were based on.

Something very simple... At least, that disc can now stand in his own case!

Comments are welcomed and I will gladly make some changes if you want!

Thanks gregmasciola....I've also found this tutorial effective for creating smoke in Photoshop:

So, I've liked a lot of yours, but not totally loved. And that's no offense, just an opinion.

But this. HOLY SHIZ. I love.

WAIT. I just went back and saw Alice. MOTHER OF HOLY.

Very nice, although sadly reminds me that Disney partially reneged on their original concept of a more painterly style.

But still an excellent cover.

I've gotten a few requests to start a mailing list for the Disney covers, so if anyone is interested, you can send me a private message with your e-mail address and I will e-mail you the covers as I complete them.

Probably this one (the original dust jacket):

I recently had inspiration for the same idea, but unfortunately couldn't find a source image of a high enough resolution with Google.

A long time ago, in Denmark, far, far away from the Skywalker Ranch in the U.S., I wanted to do some Blu SW covers. After putting nearly 60 hours into this set, it's finally finished. I'd like to thank all who gave me help during the process, feedback and general thoughts - thanks!
