Australia The Stepfather

Anyone got the AU copy of The Stepfather?

I was thinking of getting it but it looks like it it's bare bones with only one trailer
http://www.devoteddvd.com.au/image/coverart/102347.jpg

Guess I'll have to get the US version. Why do they always screw us?

I think saying we're getting "screwed" is going a bit far. The US release is Shout Factory and like Criterion they often get their hands on content not available in other territories or create exclusive content.

Umbrella Entertainment on the other hand have been an excellent Aussie distributor releasing some great cult titles with generally excellent results and often at exceptionally good prices (one only needs to look at Madman Entertainment to see how good Umbrella's pricing is).

In this case it appears that the actual transfer and audio could be the same/similar to the Shout release in which case you have to consider the fact that Umbrella's release came out a month ago and it's already available in a 2 for $20 sale at JB. With the end of financial year coming up there'll probably be a 20% sale as well making an $8 price tag a real possibility within the next two weeks. On the other hand you can buy the US release which currently works out to AU$20 excluding shipping, so when you take into account a potential 20% off sale and add on Amazon's shipping you'd be looking at three times the price. If you think that's worth it for an audio commentary and 26 minute doco then go for it.

We're hardly getting screwed. If ours was the same or similar price I'd agree, but we're getting the film for anywhere from 2.5-3 times less. That's actually a hell of a deal considering the actual film on the disc is the most important thing and I'd consider us to be pretty damn lucky to be the second country in the world to get a release of a cult classic.

Umbrella should be commended for releasing these titles and for them being at such low prices so close to release. Compare them to Criterion, Shout Factory and Second Sight and we're fortunate to have a distributor releasing titles like Blow Out, Scanners and Stepfather at prices which are significantly less than the niche distributors responsible for them in other countries.

Just my two cents...

Yeah, I hear what you're saying, and if this was another movie I would probably not care as much. But I'm a huge Terry O'Quinn fan and I want to have as many bonus features as I can.

Not interested in bonus features so picked up the local release today.

Really looking forward to watching this movie again.

I have absolutely no problem with Umbrella doing what they're doing. They're doing budget releases in the local market with fantastic transfers and audio (most of the time). I couldn't be arsed with features most of the time, so I'd rather pay $10 for an Umbrella jobby with good PQ, sound, OAR etc.

Whilst I agree
(as I rarely touch extras unless I'm very bored) I can certainly understand those of us who do want all the extras they can get there hands and even more so if its a film you have a particular soft spot for maybe there should always be a budget release as well as a complete edition (never gonna happen but would be nice in theory)

I understand this view point and agree; there are several films I want to devour every piece of content on (I've never meet anyone who wanted too much insight into The Stepfather though; most people would agree its great though, me included) Slightly off topic, I do get slightly annoyed however when I hear people wanting a release with the all bells and whistles for the budget price (and I'm not accusing anyone here of).

I would buy this in an instant if it contained the original stereo audio! The US disc has mono audio - quite annoying when even the VHS releases had the stereo track.
