+1. I think, for Brave, the Female protagonists leading the film in such a way might have been one of the possible driving criteria for the oscar. Even in animated they want to encourage women's reservation now

After having watched the major movies released last year,

My 2012 Top Ten List :

1)The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey
2)Prometheus
3)The Amazing Spider-Man
4)Skyfall
5)The Avengers
6)Brave*
7)Cabin In The Woods
8)Zero Dark Thirty
9)Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
10)Total Recall

*I have not yet seen Wreck It Ralph. It may make it in to that list but it will not replace Brave. I absolutely loved the mother/daughter aspect of the story and the amazing soundtrack (especially 'Touch The Sky' ). I'll go as far as to say that I like it more than the first Toy Story. I don't understand the hate towards it. Is it cos it's geared more towards a younger audience? I get it, if Miranda's wish had done something like change the whole kingdom making them go to war or something, it would've been interesting. Kinda like a Pixar style Lord of The Rings/Cinderella movie.. But I'm really happy with how Brave turned out. It was a mother/daughter movie more than anything. Everything else is just a backdrop. It probably won the Oscar due to the amazing art direction .

Here is my Top 10 English movies of 2012.
Have watched all these movies at least twice.

1. Django Unchained
2. Lincoln
3. The Dark Knight Rises
4. Cloud Atlas
5. Argo
6. Life of Pi
7. Silver Linings Playbook
8. Zero Dark Thirty
9. The Avengers
10.Moonrise Kingdom

And IMO 'Cabin In The Woods' was the worst movie I watched in 2012. I never intended to watch this movie, but when I saw the then IMDB ranking around 8, I was inclined; but this was a mistake. Quite a predictable movie and seems nothing new in comparison to old horror movies.

My Top 5 Hindi movies of 2012.

1. Gangs of Wasseypur 1 & 2
2. Paan Singh Tomar
3. Barfi
4. Kahaani
5. English Vinglish

Cabin In The Woods was basically a parody of all the horror movies that have come before it. It took all the clichés, stereotypical character models and stupid behavior and deconstructed them to the core, putting a new spin on it. The 'Gods' in the movie are basically a metaphor for us (the audience) who want the same thing over and over. Doing something different in the horror genre is usually not met with good responses, which is the ending of the movie. You gotta break the cycle sometime though (even if everyone might not accept it), which is what Cabin In The Woods did. Marty's final action in the movie is metaphor for just that.
Besides all that, I find it to be a fun movie, even more so due to the dialogues written by Joss Whedon.

I watched this in 3D last night:

I really enjoyed the movie, this was my first watch, didn't get time to watch in the cinema. The story is nothing short of amazing, and holds well. I read the book way back in University and enjoyed it, but couldn't remember much. I have the book and will re-read just to see how the book-to-film transition was made.

The casting was just perfect. Irrfan Khan and Tabu were a delight to watch. The young actors who played Pi Patel were also perfect in their roles. Cinematography was a highlight. The scenes from Pondicherry right to the scenes where he was stranded in the ocean are beautiful and come alive.
The interaction between Pi and the animals, especially the tiger, were striking and profound. Ang-Lee captured the culture of Pondicherry so appropriately well. I enjoyed the background score by Mycheal Danna. The small Bharatnatyam thillana was also worth a mention.

The 3D on this disc was also something worth a mention. This is the first disc that i have seen so many popouts on. The depth on the scenes are spectacular. In some of the scenes the aspect ration changes, i am not sure if this was done to enhance the 3D, but if it was for that it did the purpose, one scene in particular was 'The Flying Fish' scene.

PQ and AQ were top class. PQ was detailed, clear. I didnt pick up any issues. AQ sports a powerful 7.1 DTS-HD Master audio. The track plunges you into the movie. Sometimes you even felt like you were in the boat with Pi.

Movie: 4.5 / 5
3D: 4.5 / 5
PQ: 4.5 / 5
AQ: 5 / 5

A really awesome movie with great repeat value!!!

X2: X-Men United

Enjoyed watching this yet again (this must be my 4th or 5th watch) , Like this much more than its predecessor, i find it way more engaging , entertaining , with much better writing and VFX ,Music is also better this time.

Talking of PQ , this 10 year old movie starts to show its age and just lacks the outright sharpness and clarity of newer releases , there is nothing noteworthy about the Cinematography as well , that being said the picture looks pretty good with nicely saturated colors and good details, Audio totally rocks and is a treat to listen to , John Ottman's score is given its due priority , there are lots of cross channel pans and the surrounds remain active throughout. One scene that stands out is the one between X-Jet & Airforce Fighter jets! It sounds amazing.

Movie 7.5/10
PQ 8.0/10
AQ 9.5/10

Totally agree with the technical presentation , The Cinematography , The 3D , The music (Pi's Lullaby by Bombay Jayashri is amazing! ) and the mix were all great , the movie started off well and i did like the part in India and their journey in the ship , but couldn't tolerate the second half of the movie. 3D did add a lot to the movie and the scene when
[Show spoiler]The Tiger suddenly jumps from the boat scared the hell out of me and everyone present in the theater! Excellent use of 3D there
.

I watched 'The Great Escape' today afternoon

This was the movie I remember watching 8 years ago in college and I was amazed that time just by its great story. This is one of the movie that made me learn and read more on 2nd World War followed by my increased interest on all world war movies.
Since when it's Bluray release was announced, I wanted to revisit this movie in its best format and I must say I spent 3 entertaining hours today.
This is based on a true story. The cast and Cinematography is great. This was made in 1963 and still all the scenes were filmed awesome.
Be it the tunnel scene or the bike chase or the plane ride, everything was awesome!!

What I feel about this movie is... when anybody start watching it, they can't stop it; it is really an interesting plot
When I told my friends, Let's watch a nice movie made in 1963. They told me..."Kya yaar, kuchh aur laga le...(oh please, play something else)" but when we started watching it, there was no stopping till the end and...in the end everybody praised the movie a lot

Bluray picture quality is also very good as seen on my 40" TV, but it's not so great restoration if we compare it with old movies like 'Lawrence of Arabia' or 'Ben Hur'. I felt no problem with the sound quality.
Those who believe in watching old classics, do give this film a visit.

Watched Superman Returns today :

Movie : 4.5/5
With half a point subtracted for the kid storyline and Bosworth as Lois.
Apart from that, I absolutely love it, even more than the Reeve movies. I hope MOS can be atleast AS good as this.
I found this beautiful post about Superman Returns:

I know that most people disliked SR because Superman didn't punch anything. But as I think now, I never liked movies filled with relentless fighting and destruction, and mind-numbing violence of chaotic visuals and sound.
Superman Returns is a powerful movie, because of the story! Its a epic tragedy, but uplifting at the end!
To me the core of the movie is the character and that one particular scene-
When Superman takes Lois for a nostalgic trip in the sky-
This-
"You know my, Richard, he's a pilot. He takes me up all the time"
"Not like this."
Or this-
"I forgot how warm you were."
and-
"Listen, what do you hear?"
"Nothing."
"I hear everything!"

And the greatest line ever spoken that completely defines who Superman is-
"You wrote that the World doesn't need a saviour, but everyday I hear them crying for one."
And the way Brandon speaks those few dialogues is just magic! He makes me feel I can fly!

And how can anybody forget the scene when Superman is beaten by common thugs and stabbed by Luthor. Its excruciatingly painful to watch and does what it sets out to do!
That our world doesn't appreciate a true saviour or friend, when he's there for us. It doesn't accept a good man, because it doesn't believe in goodness anymore! this is why many potential Christ-figure are stabbed everyday as they try to help others, putting their lives at risk, or facing ridicule. Because the common humanity doesn't believe in goodness anymore! That's a huge statement to make, one that grounds the character to a human being, not a God!

The greatness of the film lies in its heart; in the emotional journey of isolation, alienation and return that he undertakes. I undertook that journey with him as well. Christopher Reeve had made me admire Superman, and be completely mesmerized by his charm as Superman. Brandon Routh made me love and respect the character.
And Goyer said that Superman was always like a King in a throne; worshipped and reverred but never identified with, and that Man of Steel was the first movie to make him relatable. I absolutely do not agree with his statement at all!
I can relate to Superman's condition in SR more than in MOS, because MOS treats him almost as an alien. He's wearing human clothes, but has a stern unemotional look, then the things he does before becoming Superman, makes him feel alien and not human. The fact that we only see little Clark in flashbacks, we are not able to connect with him in a way that we could have if we saw him grow. In contrast Superman never feels like an alien in SR because he's always so warm and human at his core, in his relation with Lois or Jimmy.
I know what it is to lose someone whom you love, to someone else. And I know how difficult it is to digest that fact (It makes one physically sick,;snatches away sleep for real) I absolutely connected to Brandon as Superman! He was great! It was just misfortune that the film was misunderstood by most! People failed to see its heart.

I admit that it was useless to remake the "land" plot from Superman The Movie, and probably even the kid, but it was still a great story!

Such a daring and risky, but mature portrayal of The Last Son of Krypton. And look at how Richard white is treated, again with respect for what he is-a true companion of Lois; a brave man! He's not your average cliched rival/bad guy!

The last scene when Superman kind of Baptizes his son as his successor, was Great and quite beautiful! Though it had a sense that His days as Superman are numbered, and soon his son'll take over his legacy!

It was also, as many have aptly pointed out, a great closure to the Donner Superman stories(if treated like that). The editing is also fluid and doesn't create problems(unlike MOS).
And finally, a great score by John Ottman (the newly rendered William's themes including)!
And for the first time I noticed how beautiful the framing composition is by Newton Thomas Siegel! Though i am not a fan of the amber colour palette!

I just absolutely love this movie, unfairly maligned by the audience in my opinion- A movie that treats Superman with the utmost respect it deserves!
And I sincerely hope those who'll see it will try to appreciate the Goodness and greatness it has to offer, rather than action sequences!

Wow ! 4.5/5! (I Can understand this excitement , there are many movies i've given ridiculously high rating , but watching them for the second time has usually changed my opinion , rated Iron Man 3 4.5/5 recently )

I watched this a few years ago , and frankly don't remember a thing from this movie ,though i think i liked it , but Man of Steel easily surpasses this anyday!

I've seen SR more than a 100 times . MOS doesn't really seem to leave a lot of room for character development . I liked some tracks by Zimmer (like 'Tornado', 'Goodbye My Son' and 'Earth') but Ottman knocked it out of the park with the score in SR.

Watch this and honestly tell me you don't get chills with the hair on the back of your neck standing up from 1:17 onwards. From 1:30 onwards, it's just breathtakingly beautiful!

Oh , Actually i was talking about the overall experience and the entertainment value of the movie , and frankly i don't go so deep into a movie ,The entertainment and the experience are the factors that matter the most to me ,but yeah a well written and skillfully directed movie is obviously appreciated.

Coming to the film score , MOS's score was just amazing , and i don't usually pay attention to the music when it comes to english movies but i found this one to be something noteworthy and special , even Iron Man 3's score was really good. Judging by this video i don't find the score to be anything special, but then again maybe with context to the movie and the kind of tone and feel at that particular moment this might have worked well.

Try to watch SR again if possible.I'm sure you'll love it. Note that it's not an action flick though. The mood reminds me of something like Titanic.

Actually, the audio is great and video is nowhere as bad as the review suggests. It's as 'waxy' as the blu ray of Batman Begins..which is not that bad at all.

Thumbs up

The Dark Knight

Watched this for the third time and yet again it didn't failed to amaze me one bit ,almost just as much it did the first time , the movie has a constant serious tone and Nolan does a remarkable job of maintaining it throughout , he just made me feel what he ought to and what the scenes demanded , this kind of connection with the movie is something extraordinary , the writing is exceptionally smart , direction is outstanding , excellent performances by each and every member of the cast especially Heath Ledger.

The picture quality of the Blu-Ray is surprisingly bad , noise reduction is very much there and so is edge enhancement add to this Warner's usual artifacts present with the VC-1 encoded disks are also there , IMAX scenes are much better though but the overall result is mostly disappointing.

Audio is much better , i would have liked more surround activity but frankly i was so occupied in the movie i paid less attention to the audio , Dark Knight Rises sounds way better than this though , Way better!

Movie 8.5/10
PQ 7.5/10
AQ 8.5/10

PQ 7.5/10
AQ 8.5/10
Let's not get carried away here . It's a good movie, but no where near a classic in my humble opinion.
Mr.Ledger's Joker is for sure a lunatic but an actual threat - .Not menacing at all.

Nolan made a mistake of turning this into a crime noir. It's a comic book movie, why so pretentious?
