Fox not Sony.

A lot of he titles listed are not owned by Sony, but distributed and I think there is little chance in hell in seeing the likes of Silent Hill or Bram Stoker where SOny does not own the master

There's some excellent choices people have been posting in this thread for movies that could do with a fresh remaster.

After being extremely impressed with the new Ghostbusters transfers, I'm really interested to see how the new M4K transfers for MIB, Spider-Man 2 and Godzilla turn out.

Godzilla is a real guilty pleasure of mine. I don't see it as a proper Godzilla movie but it's still entertaining none the less. I still think it would have been a better film if it hadn't been called Godzilla, because last time I checked, old Zilla himself wasn't a mutated Iguana.

Sadly, I don't think you're gonna see Gattaca. The Sony Blu is OOP and will be replaced by an Image edition this Tuesday.

but no they instead hold off entirely on the extras expecting people to upgrade to their 'Mastered in 4K' tittles whist keeping previous editions.
But a lot of re-releases "force" people to keep their old version because often some of the extras are missing on the new release. My point is, people who care about extras are typically stuck having two versions of the movies...regardless of the studio. Same thing going on here but these 4K releases as these are only fixed on PQ like Superbit. It seems a bit rare that a new version has 100% and more of the original release's extras. Owning at least two versions of the movie is a way of life for many.

I'm almost positive this was finished in 2K. I'd be very surprised if they re-did a 2K-finished film in 4K.

Yeah, it's listed as 2K on IMDB. But I wouldn't put it past Sony to rebuild 2K movies by upscaling the VFX shots and transferring the remainder at true 4K res. We might start to see that happen more often than not as the 4K future approaches.

BTW I'm not saying that Bad Boys II is on their slate, I'm just thinking out loud.

Godzilla, with all its CGI must only be 2K for its vfx? And yet it is getting a mastered in 4K release. Same could be said for most of these titles apart from the recent films, of which may have had their CGI done in 4K, maybe less.

I just got my Ghostbusters Mastered in 4K disc, I can't wait to watch it, though the thread on here makes me kinda wonder as other people have stated that the previous release is better, and looking at the screen caps both disc's appear to have there pro's and con's. I just wish this release wasn't a bare bones release. I wish they would do Ghostbusters 2 with the extra's that the DVD has.

Wasn't the the first Taxi Driver release scanned in at 4k for its debut on blu-ray, I can't imagine it looking better than it already does for this re-release

Yes it was. Only difference with the new one is a higher video bitrate and x.v.Color both of which aren't going to produce a huge upgrade.

Godzilla was optically graded and didn't go through a full DI, though, so it could still be scanned at 4K, even if the CGI is only 2K.

Question Superbad

So do you guys think Superbad might get the 4K treatment in a future wave?

I consider buying Pineapple Express for the slipcover and it would be nice to have the similar Superbad in the same edition

Yes, but Godzilla was finished on film as Dragun said, so there's a complete negative for transfer. Scanning it at 4K won't be of huge benefit to the VFX, but everything else should get a noticeable boost in detail. Same goes for the impending release of Men In Black.

For stuff that's finished on a 2K DI it gets a lil' more tricky because there is no finished first-generation film source to 're-scan', just a bunch of ones and zeroes locked at 2K, plus the raw camera negative that's been stored away (the film-out neg doesn't count because it's come off the DI).

In-camera shots are not the problem, the VFX is. If you've got a lot of CG shots then redoing them at 4K could become a very expensive proposition - especially if the CG has to be built from scratch and not just re-rendered - whereas upscaling is far cheaper and can yield excellent results. You get out what you put in, as they say.

Heck, never mind the VFX, Sony did it with the live-action footage on Skyfall, producing a 4K master for a show that was lensed on the 2.8K Alexa.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys for the informative posts, whether its from 2K or 4K, I just want BBII! It should look great regardless.

I don't suppose Sony will have a master for the House of Flying Daggers, as that would be a great candidate for a 4K scan.

Anything would be better than the artifact ridden MPEG-2 mess we are stuck with now. That's why I have held off buying it.

There is AVC encodes out but they look "almost" as bad but I bought one to be able to see it until better arrives The Lossless track is also very nice.

I as well am interesting in seeing how the MIB 4k disc looks. Considering it already looks great, I wonder if there will be an real noticeable improvement.
