While an original take on Frankenstein might be interesting, I can't imagine what they could bring to it that hasn't already been done. The Coppola version stuck much closer to the novel, but wasn't that great, in spite of DeNiro. There was a TV movie version that was also closer to the book, but also wasn't terrific.
If you attempt to make it look like the 1930s films, it will seem campy and probably remind everyone of Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein". When I watch "Son of Frankenstein", I always start to laugh because the Brooks film took so much from it. But if you make it modern, which could be believable if placed slightly in the future with all the advances in both robotics and stem cell research, it could just wind up being "meh". But DelToro does have a great imagination. A Frankenstein with the creativity and intellect of "Pan's Labyrinth" and the humor of "Hellboy" could be spectacular. |
