Actor (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle & CJ7) & Director - Stephen Chow's latest movie comes to Blu-ray in Hong Kong on the 9th May 2013!

The original language on this one is Mandarin. The entire principal cast are Mandarin speakers from the mainland or Taiwan. Chiu Chi-ling may have spoken his lines in Cantonese--I can't remember if he was obviously dubbed or not--but he's in it for less than five minutes. Chow himself isn't in it at all, so if you're expecting to see him, put that out of your head.

It's better than CJ7 and has a few scenes of old-style Chow brilliance, but I wish they'd put more effort into making the big SFX setpieces actually funny. There's some good stuff involving a guy called "Almighty Foot" (for reasons I won't spoil), but mostly the SFX are just there to impress (or occasionally shock), as opposed to Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, which got great comic mileage out of using fancy CGI for ridiculous stuff like a soccer ball getting kicked into orbit. It's also a surprisingly gruesome film, which some folks might appreciate. In fact it was slightly controversial in the mainland, because there's no rating system there and parents took their little kids, expecting some harmless family fun with the Monkey King.

I was so excited for this film until I discovered that Chow does not appear in it at all. So for now, I'll pass. Unless of course its awsome.

From what little scenes I saw, this movie seems crappy. Will attempt to watch the entire thing and hoping my first impression was wrong.

Crappy or not, it's currently #3 in China's all time box-office.

it's not crappy. one of the best movies i've seen out of China this year. everything about this was amazing. i preordered as soon as it was it up. there was one bit where the movie fell down,
[Show spoiler] the bit where Shu Qi is dancing with the monkey king. It felt like a hollywood blooper reel.
. Other than that, I don't see how anyone could dislike this movie.

Yeah it's a great show. Has all of Stephen Chow's trademark jokes in it. It's like a semi-prequel/reboot to his Chinese Odyssey movies. Don't let the crappy trailers deceive you, this is a must-watch Hong Kong movie for 2013.

I found it pretty average, despite the lead actor almost being as good as Stephen Chow and loving Shu Qi I got bored on more than one occasion. Not worth a blind buy imo

Bored? Sorry i have to disagree. The movie moved at such a fast pace there's hardly anytime to breathe. About the languages, the movie is much funnier in Cantonese than it is Mandarin( Shu Qi did her own dubbing for this one and so does most of the Hong Kong cast) because most of the verbal jokes in the movie are Cantonese related( the mandarin version just sounds awkward and forced) I believe that is the reason why Cantonese language is the only language option available. It's meant to be watch that way. If you're a fan of Stephen Chow movies( even if he's not in it) there's no reason why you shouldn't pick up this blu-ray.

Agree , great film, lots of fun. If you like Stephen Chows other films then you will like this even tho he only directed it. The Blu ray has very good PQ also.

I prefer the Mandarin version. Almost ALL the main characters in the movie are native Mandarin speakers from mainland China and Taiwan, and looks like Mandarin is the one spoken on set. There are people saying even Stephen Chow was not happy that the HK release does not have Mandarin. I should have bought the Taiwan BD which has both. I assumed the HK release should have both and did not pay too much attention when I pre-ordered it.

Taiwan release is better which comes with both Mandarin and Cantonese audio.

Why was this not released on 3d blu-ray? This movie would look amazing in 3d.
