I'm reminded that we really need Blu-ray upgrades of Le Samouraï and Touchez Pas Au Grisbi.
I'm reminded of how good and in need of an upgrade Le Samourai is every time I see your avatar.

(That is the opening set, apartment, right? I'm not seeing things? I love the squeaking sound of the bird . . . so sinister).

There's Ikiru, then there's everything else as far as I'm concerned. Great, Great movie.

Correct! One of my favorite opening shots ever. Certainly my favorite movie ever.

Probably has my favorite Baysian set piece: the highway chase scene.

Tangentially, Criterion needs at least one Brickheimer production on BluRay (hopefully Thief)

The Island blatantly plagiarized The Clonus Horror, and Dreamworks settled out of court when the filmmakers of The Clonus Horror filed a lawsuit.

In my opinion, though, The Island is a far better movie. The Clonus Horror is a fun flick, but it's unintentionally laughable with the styles and the general approach. When The Clonus Horror was featured on Mystery Science Theater, the robots had no shortage of comedic ammunition.

Agreed. That's a great sequence. This is the scene that got my hopes up for Bay's Transformers, but my hopes were ultimately splattered on the ground like an ice cream cone falling out of a clumsy child's hands. Such a shame.

Yup. If he would have still been under the patronage of Jerry Bruckheimer, the Transformers films would have much better.

I have hope for the next film though as Pain & Gain may have tapped stirred his better creative impulses...plus Marky Mark>Shia LeBeouff.

Just read elsewhere that Howard's End has just gone OOP, so if you were pondering that one, don't ponder for much longer.

My BN had a copy and snagged it the first day of the sale

I also snagged Chungking Express during the last sale.

Gonna try a diff BN today and see if they have Army of Shadows or Marienbad.

it's cool. I saw it in a class in college on 'film and the body,' and the point was apparently that the way that the light shines through the windows/blinds in many scenes 'castrates' Gere or represents 'castration,' and so (beyond the narrative) the film offers a commentary on masculinity in the ways these scenes are shot. really interesting.

the pretenses of the class aside, I simply love Paul Schrader, one of my favorite screenwriters. Blue Collar would make another great spine for Criterion.

i'm not really steeped in film studies or theory, what I know is mainly from that class and a couple of others I took, some of my favorite classes in college for sure

I haven't seen Pacific Rim yet so I can't get too deep in the woods here but neon ads? Really? The sea of neon ads in Blade Runner would have been pointless if the association between neon and densely populated Asian urban areas hadn't already existed.

One of my favorites: Tim Burton's Gotham City was Metropolis inside and out. The exteriors are pretty obvious but even touches like analog dials and clunky, manual levers in a futuristic setting were really cool.

But really, what science fiction film hasn't lifted something or other from Metropolis?

Give it time. It was released well within my 'I can wait for the B&N sale' window and I suspect that was true for many of us. Mine just showed up a few days ago.

I'm sure there will be a crop of freshly minted zealots to help spread the word come November.

I hope to be one of them

I think we will get the Cronenberg set and a David Lynch set - Mulholland Drive, Eraserhead, Lost Highway and / or Inland Empire. Or maybe separately Mulholland Drive.
