Default If blu-ray Didn't Exist...

Would you be just as enthusiastic about home theater and waste all your free time on a DVD website like I do here on blu-ray.com?

Well, I would be just as enthusiastic about home theatre but not about posting on any websites other than the one I review for (see signature for a link). Basically, if HD DVD was the only choice ever offered for HDM I wouldn't spend any time online about it.

I'm probably just as entusiastic as I used to be b4 Blu-ray came on the scene, however during the format war my passion for home theater was greatly increased as I was quite actively debating on forums about blu-ray...

I remember taking sides in the great VHS==Beta war and being amazed when the first Pro-logic pieces started coming out. Only the names have changed, at the time all those innovations were considered the way Bluray is now.

Cash is fleeting. Movies are forever!

I had a great surround system and DVD player before with lots of movies - however, I wasn't about to spend the money on a HDTV with just a few channels of hi-def to choose from.

Once I saw hi-def movies and games available in one product - I went and got a 65" 1080P DLP and haven't looked back. Good times.

no you wouldn't atleast not now, HD DVD was a reaction to Blu-ray entering the scene...

Quote:
Sony started two projects applying the new diodes: UDO (Ultra Density Optical) and DVR Blue (together with Pioneer), a format of rewritable discs which would eventually become Blu-ray (more specifically, BD-RE).[6] The core technologies of the formats are essentially similar. The first DVR Blue prototypes were unveiled at the CEATEC exhibition in October 2000.[7] In February 2002, the project was officially announced as Blu-ray,[8] and the Blu-ray Disc Association was founded by the nine initial members.

The DVD Forum (which was chaired by Toshiba) was deeply split over whether to go with the more expensive blue lasers or not. Although today's Blu-ray Discs appear virtually identical to a standard DVD, when the Blu-ray Discs were initially developed they required a protective caddy to avoid mis-handling by the consumer. (Early CD-Rs also featured a protective caddy for the same purpose.) The Blu-ray prototype's caddy was both expensive and physically different from DVD, posing several problems.[9] In March 2002, the forum voted to approve a proposal endorsed by Warner Bros. and other motion picture studios that involved compressing HD content onto dual-layer DVD-9 discs.[10][11] However, in spite of this decision, the DVD Forum's Steering Committee announced in April that it was pursuing its own blue-laser high-definition solution.[12] In August, Toshiba and NEC announced their competing standard Advanced Optical Disc.[13] It was finally adopted by the DVD forum and renamed to HD DVD the next year,[14] after being voted down twice by Blu-ray Disc Association members, prompting the U.S. Department of Justice to make preliminary investigations into the situation.[15][16] Three new members had to be invited and the voting rules changed before the vote finally passed.[17][18]

if Blu-ray didn't exist we'd still be watching DVD's...

In all honesty, probably not. I only have a modest DVD collection, and I only really got into Blu-ray because my PS3 came with the capability, and I wanted to see what movies looked like in high-def.

If HD DVD were the only high-def media available, I probably would have gotten it eventually but much later than when I got my PS3. The exception, of course, would be if the PS3 played HD DVDs, in which case, things would be about as they are now, except with an inferior format.

I have 1,100 DVDs, and double-dipped to get remastered versions and Superbit etc.... and already had my Sharp Aquos, so I would still be doing what ever I could to "tweak" my system to make my DVDs look better, but I was running out of movies I didn't have that I wanted anyways

I would probably be building up my Audio more if there was no blu-ray.

EDIT.... I also never got on any DVD forums.... this one got me hooked with the "Hot Deals" section!!!! But I originally came here for suggestions on players!
