Piles of DVDs were delayed

I think it took Ed Wood 4 years sfrom announcement to actual release

It's just that most people weren't around in the 97-2000 area when the same things happened

dont remember ever seeing DVD postpone any movies
There have been many DVDs postponed over the years. The difference is that you most likely never paid as much attention.

The reasons a movie can be postponed can be extremely varied

Legal: (most often with catalogue titles) sometimes someone else has rights on something (like a music score) and deals need to be brokered before the release.

Release Timing: sometimes a title will be announced for a date but the studio will decide it would not be the right time so they postpone it a bit. One example of this (that happens relatively frequently)is when studio A announces a relatively big title but B announces an extremely big title. Since most people won’t buy (or rent) more then one movie and the first week is the most important, A would change the linup to put mediocre titles (or catalogue) that are not as critical)

Creation Timing: Sometimes things take a bit longer. The issue is that replicators make their schedule and so if the studio misses the window then it needs to put in a new demand

Content issues: sometimes the studio thinks it has something that it does not, for example it looks at the master and realizes that it needs restoration which it did not anticipate.

Additional content: The studio might have decided to add extra content at the last minute (for example it started out as a disk set but all that they wanted to add would not fit so decided to go with a two disk and then add more content)

Scheduling: let’s face it there are many steps involving many people sometimes things don’t happen in a timely manner, for example the director is working on a different project and was not available to film a commentary.

And there are probably many other reasons that I have not thought of (and these apply and have happened equally well for DVD

For BD I can think of a few more.

For example R & B films delayed one title (I think it was Nature’s Journey) because of a bug in a couple of players (and wanted to wait for them to be updated) and I think Chronus was delayed because he noticed an incompatibility with some players (his disk ws not to spec)

I remember in 97 being upset that Florida wasn't included in the test market for DVD. I hate to purchase goldeneye over the internet from texas since they where only selling the hardware here....$1000.00 for a combo DVD/Laserdisc player.

actually to this day there have been numerous dvd titles pushed back, especially with TVonDVD for a number of reasons. Most are the release date and the number of titles released that same day(Only so much money out there, hard to compete with big blockbuster titles) Others delays have been caused by packaging errors, delays in music rights to soundtracks(older TV shows) and even warehousing issues.

DVDS are more mainstream now and delays are not as common

It was originally scheduled for release in April of 2002. Then it got pushed back to August 2002. That release was scrapped in favor of a Special Edition scheduled for a February 2003 release. I was lucky enough to score that version of the Special Edition which shipped to retailers before getting recalled 2 or 3 days before it's street date (I got it on eBay). It didn't finally get released until October 2004. It's the same discs that got 1 year and 8 months earlier, but minus one of the bonus features. It was supposedly recalled due to licensing issues over one of the documentaries contained in the bonus features.
