I hate everything apple...have never owned a Apple product and do not enjoy anything commercial.
Blu ray is not dead....high street stores are dead.
I own loads of Apple products. My MacBook saved me from the hell of Windows.

Windows is about as commercial as it gets.

I don't buy technology because it's a fashion statement. I just want a laptop that works. My MacBook's still going strong after three years. That's all I care about.

It's obviously written tongue-in-cheek. What amazes me is how everyone is treating it as a serious article.

Most of the people who post in the UK threads are humourless. The abuse I got for my own post in this thread (most of the fallout was eventually deleted by moderators) has left a nasty taste in my mouth.

It's the kind of board where, if the regulars tell you an article is an assault on the dignity of the blu-ray format, or 3D TV is the future, you agree with them or they gang up and call you names.

Sorry you had a bad experience on here thats not good

Re the 3D thing I have found the reverse, I have found the 3D haters to be exactly that and more venomous. I have come out fighting for 3D because of that

Funny you saying that. I found that the UK threads are usually the ones with humour if anything - like AVF for instance. And Ive found the humourless, juvenile, ganging up mentality more noticeable in the US threads - but then there are far more US threads, people etc.

+1. Because they dont have a 3D setup at home or dont want/cant afford 3D titles etc? Thats what I suspect anyway.

I was a 3D sceptic until recently - not a venomous one though

I don't have an opinion about 3D either way. My original point was that The Man keeps bombarding us with technology (DVD, blu-ray, 3D, Ultraviolet, downloads) that needs to be properly supported. All technology starts out as a status symbol owned by the few (hence my comment about teengers and people who queue outside Apple shops - both market indicators) but needs to move into the mainstream and appeal to the masses if it's going to succeed. I love my blu-ray player, it's one of the best things I've ever bought, but in my experience people haven't embraced blu-ray in the same way they embraced DVD. I can't pretend that's not the case. And I know lots of people who've talked about buying 3D TVs but didn't. That's not rhetoric, it's just my experience.

People set upon the article about blu-ray, and my comment about 3D, with real viciousness. I can't imagine wanting to drag somebody through the mud and belittle them over something as trivial as a disagreement over television.

The thing is, what you post here is not going to make any difference to anything. 3D will go from strength to strength, or fail again (& I think fail again). Hollywood is counting on 3D & have poured a ton of money into it, they might have to think again.

There is a buying change going on. It looks like they can't give away books these days, & the local charity shops are selling DVD's at £1-£2 pounds each, & CD's for 50p & don't seem to be selling any. Blu-ray seems to be doing OK if they're not too expensive, but they're not going to be mass-market like DVD's temporarily were.

I'm sure this point has been made already, but the reason studios are pouring money into 3D technology is to circumvent piracy - the thinking being (a) piracy is a horrific problem, and (b) that you can't torrent or download a full 3D movie, or that it's significantly more difficult to re-create that experience.

I remember sitting with someone quite high up at a major studio's home entertainment branch about 5 years ago (when I worked in the industry) and their ignorance about piracy and downloading is astonishing. To give you an example, it was about the time that an extremely popular animated film starring a well-known yellow family was being released, and the gentleman told me, proudly, that they have excellent monitoring software and can estimate with a decent degree of accuracy how many times it was illegally downloaded.

He then told me that they then times this amount of downloads by £19.99 - being the RRP of the DVD at full price - and report this as the amount the film has 'lost' in revenue.

I didn't even know where to start with that one.

The things that keep me awake at night are oil companies plundering the arctic, Monsanto bullying farmers and Tesco foisting unwanted supermarkets on small communities. Mulling over the fate of 3D and blu-ray is a (relatively) pleasant distraction.

I think DVD got a huge boost in the beginning because it was a quantum leap forward after the horror of VHS. Blu-ray might take longer to get established but as DVD players wear out people might aswell replace them with blu-ray. Prices are dropping and they can still watch DVDs. I waited for the format war between HD-DVD and blu-ray to end before switching to HD. Championing a format that quickly becomes obsolete is an expensive mistake to make.

Edit: Me in a thread about any kind of technology is like some hideous cosmic joke. The only point I wanted to make was that distributors need to support physical sales of films... and that I resented buying the 3D release of Prometheus just for the special features

I believe 3d will die, at least in its current form. I had LASIK surgery to get rid of my glasses, why would I purposely put them back on? Clumsy and uncomfortable at best
