He turns on the BR player.

He clicks "menu" on the BR remote. (But nothing happens.)

Then, he gets a "searching for signals message" on his TV.

Then, he gets a "mode not supported" message on the TV.

So he has no way to change the TV screen resolution.

(So he says.)

Here is another (possible) issue:

He said, "...the BDPS-5100 manual specifies a "high speed" HDMI cable.

When he purchased the new HDMI cable, he accepted an HDMI cable that the sales clerk gave him. The clerk also told him that "all HDMI cables are high speed HDMI cables." Now he wonders if that is true; and maybe the clerk did not give him a high-speed HMDI cable.

(I suspect this is not a real issue; the problem is something else.)

******

Another development: I now have a manual reader that lets me search the BDPS-5100 manual (but not read it from start to finish). What's up with that? Anyway, having a search-based manual reader would make the connection problem easier if I had astute search terms for this problem. It still looks like a hard problem because the paragraphs that I have read are complicated.

is your friends tv a 1080p tv? if not, you may need to try to hook up the blu ray player to another tv, and adjust the output to 720p on the blu ray player, or possible he could have a bad hdmi port on the tv, try plugging it in to another hdmi input

This is a resolution issue as the previous poster said. Same thing happened to me when I took my BD-player to my kids room. Living room Tv is a 1080p set but the Tv in my kids room is a 720p Samsung. Same error mesaage there. Change the players output to 720p and it`ll work OK.
