It is more likely that the second disk is for special features which may be on a Blu-ray or a DVD.

Since he keeps separating the 2D and 3D in his Tweets, I'm thinking they're separate discs. This would also most easily allow them to sell Predator 2D by itself down the line.

Problem is his tweets don't match the description on Fox Connect. He says there may not be a DVD, yet:

"THE ULTIMATE HUNTING TROPHY – This limited-edition gift set includes an exclusive keepsake sculpture with removable mask to celebrate the arrival of Predator on Blu-ray 3D™ — plus the 2D Blu-ray™ and DVD versions of the movie, along with hours of out-of-this-world extras!"

Notice how the I Robot disks are listed on Foxconnect:

Disk Information

Disc 1: Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray 2D
Disc 2: DVD

http://www.foxconnect.com/i-robot-blu-ray-3d.html

Unfortunately, Foxconnect doesn't list the number of disks included for Predator 3D. The term "Blu-ray 3D plus 2D Blu-ray" could mean Blu-ray 3D+2D (same disk) which means there is no separate 2D, nor is it required because the 3D disk will play in 2D on 2D equipment. Same as I Robot and Dredd 3D.

You may believe you're going to get everything you could ask for. I'll probably reserve judgment until I actually have it in my hands.

A new print, but probably not the old commentary, right?

Yeah, I am still skeptical about any new scan to be honest. I would love to be wrong, but I could easily see them just re-cycling the UHE encode for this release.

I suspect that maybe Finn is talking about the standard release, and that the exclusive gift set has the DVD no matter what.

I doubt Finn would lie about a new master. He seems reasonably savvy, and must understand that the UHE was poorly received. I guess this will be the litmus test of whether or not we can believe what he says.

When you put two and two together, he isn't lying. He just doesn't know yet.
The fact that there is no disk information for Predator 3D on foxconnect and his tweet indicating that there may or may not be a DVD included may mean nothing is set in stone yet.

For I Robot 3D, the collectible with the head and the standard 3D release, both had the DVD version included. The difference was the standard I Robot 3D had only two disks, one the 3D/2D Combo disk and the DVD, while the Collector's head had a third DVD disk with addition special features.

I understand the interest in a separate 2D Predator, but with Fox's interest in promoting adoption of 3D, the 3D/2D combo disk makes more sense. There is a practical reason for this. The disk rental outlets don't carry 3D releases. They do carry the 3D/2D combo disks. I believe Dredd 3D is the latest example, which I rented from Red Box for $1.50. That is what led to my decision to buy it. I would like the same option with Predator 3D.

Just release a new decent master and I don't mind if it's a seperate 2d or a combo 2d/3d. Even if I don't have a 3d TV (but I may buy in the future)

Is it possible that the DVD could be for the extras and the Blu-Rays for the transfers?

It sounds like regardless of how they're broken up, he is confident the package will contain two Blu-Ray discs.

Doesn't sound confident at all.

"Well, I mention because the set comes with a DVD, doesn't it? And the pertinent question was, one disc or two / date of transfer."

James Finn‏@FinnAtFox @tylerfdvdtalk two and right now likely not a DVD - but maybe.

His response could mean, Right now the plan is for the release to have two blu-ray disks, but it might wind up being one Blu-ray and one DVD. The "hours of out of this world special features" are unlikely to be on the 3D or 3D/2D combo disk, whichever the first disk happens to be.

One thing is certain, this promotion has gone over like a lead balloon. Most thought that the viral tease was talking up a new Predator franchise movie and expressed disappointment with the news that it would be a 3D conversion instead. Add to that the limited edition offer of 500 that I would have thought would be sold out at Comic Con, yet are still available on Fox Connect. And what about the non head release for $49.99? That is not listed on Fox Connect. The collectibles thread doesn't show much interest in this offering, either.

Fox's next promotion of this will most likely be at NY Comic Con in Nov. I wonder if they will still be offering the limited edition head? If so, it will be a very bad sign.

You forget that this is part of a conversation.

Me: Last Tweet on this. So, Predator: separate 3D and 2D (and DVD) discs, with a new 2012 or 2013 master?

Him: Right now it is a new transfer on Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D. Please don't watch PREDATOR in standard def.

Me: Well, I mention because the set comes with a DVD, doesn't it? And the pertinent question was, one disc or two / date of transfer.

Him: Two and right now likely not a DVD - but maybe.

So, two Blu-Ray discs.

Also, I kind of think it was people's own fault for getting their hopes up for a new Predator movie. Certainly, people knew about the 3D Blu long before Comic Con, so that should've come to mind regarding what they'd be pimping during SDCC.

A transcript of the interview: http://cinema-fanatic.com/2012/10/24...le/#more-13380 In the transcript, there is a typo where Harvey refers to the process as "ATVC". It is actually "a JVC".

Excerpt: "One of the things that we do, for Blu-ray in particular, there are many ways to convert, we choose to convert from a left eye, create a right eye. The reason we do that is Blu-ray allows you to play back 2D from one of the eyes that you select. So in our release of i,Robot, you can actually put the disc into a 2D player and still experience it in 2D." Unless someone from Fox contradicts it, it will be the same for Predator 3D.

Then the 3D version is going to suck ass. lol

At least its getting a new 2D transfer.....

And at least they learned SOMETHING from the I, Robot 3D debacle and will be putting in bonus features this time around, as opposed to the lame 2 featurettes from the original 2004 DVD release.

I remain unconvinced that the 3D and 2D versions are on separate disks and will remain unconvinced until I hear it from the lips of Ian Harvey, senior vice-president of advanced technology at 20th Century Fox. I believe Finn is restricted to releasing information that was contained in the Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment news release. The term "all new transfer" does not mean there was a separate transfer and master for the 2D, nor does it mean there is a separate 2D Blu-ray for the 2D version. More likely the second Blu-ray is for the extras. Extras are included, "hours" of them, and they won't fit on a 3DBD.

Tyler, you notice he neglected to answer your question about the date of the master. The term "all new transfer" would apply because it is a 3D conversion. Odds are, the same scan that was used for the 2010 release was used.

Unfortunately, Ian Harvey won't be heard from until we are much closer to the release date. Czech and German listings show that to be 20 Nov. and 18 Dec., respectively.

Tyler, the only 'comprehensive' report on the quality and content of the 3D clips shown at Comic Con came from Fred Topel from Crave. I wonder if he discussed the disks in this release in any detail?

Anyone think that the 2D blu-ray in this package will be better than the '08 or Ultimate versions?
