I was unaware that there was a Dutch Blu release of "Kickboxer." I've never seen any screenshots or caps of it, but would love to see some...is there a site on which it is available for sale, and is it region-free? Do you have the ability to post screenshots? If so, if you could match them up to the caps-a-holic shots that would be ideal, as I would be able to tell right away whether or not it is better than the 1999 US DVD...thanks in advance ...

I agree for the most part, though the aliasing didn't at all ruin it for me... sure, the jaggies are evident (in some shots more than others), and as I said on the "Bloodsport" thread, the larger the display, the more problematic it's going to be. But for the average home-video consumer, watching on a display under 60", I think the positives of the MGM Blu far outweigh the aliasing issue (especially in comparison to the Warner transfer).

Also, the Warner transfer itself is not lacking in the detail department, it's that the color and contrast balancing (along with some black crush) hinder the appearance. When I did some zoom comparisons of the two transfers, I noticed that in some instances, the Warner transfer actually looked to have a little more detail (though often you can't make it out due to the other issues). At other times, the MGM release looked more detailed. Having rewatched the film's trailer in HD, and comparing it to the two, I found that while there were certain aspects that lean towards the look of the Warner transfer, it still looks more like the MGM release overall...To each their own, but for me, the MGM Blu was well worth it, and I would never watch the Warner double-feature disc again...

Unless you're viewing on a huge projector screen or large display, I don't think you'll have a problem with the German Blu...I'm watching on a 51" plasma and I rarely found the jaggies bothersome during my viewings...in fact, I was so happy with the way the disc looked (having never been satisfied with the Warner transfer), that I've already watched it a few times .

I'm also in favor of the German Blu, but naturally, I'd prefer less aliasing - as I am actually watching it on a 60" Plasma

BTW, I also didn't notice there's a Dutch Kickboxer around?! I just ordered yesterday from a Dutch retailer and they didn't have Kickboxer on Blu???

As would I...but unfortunately, it has it, and we knew that from the get-go...so again, it comes down to a matter of personal preference and weighing the positives and negatives of each transfer...

Yeah, that's why I was wondering where member DanielC got his copy from ...No dutch release for the film shows up in the database here on the site, and I've never seen it for sale, nor have I seen or heard any talk or discussion of it anywhere...if it does, by chance, exist somewhere, and you come across it, let me know...hopefully DanielC will be able to provide some more info...unless of course, he made a slight error in his post, which is also possible...

Well, he's in the Netherlands, so I'm pretty sure he'd know...I did just come across a Dutch version for sale here, though I know nothing about it:

http://www.dvdoutlet.nl/nl/kickboxer...983441668.html

It says runtime is 93 minutes, and considering the actual runtime of the film is 97 minutes, it would lead me to believe that this release may be a PAL upconvert (or the product specs on the site are wrong)...I don't really know...however, I'm not going to chance buying it, until I know more...

I've got bought The Black Edition of Wake of Death and the PQ ain't good.

It looks like an up scaled DVD. How crap is that. Wish I hadn't bothered now and just kept the DVD.

I've also bought The Quest on Region A Blu-Ray.

Haven't had a chance to check it out yet. What do the rest of you JCVD fans think of that transfer?

I've just ordered the 1999 HBO DVD of Kickboxer rather than buy the Blu-ray as there's nothing worse than getting a BD and its no better than its DVD counter part.

I own quite a few JCVD films but never this one until now. Lately I've been buying his films again on BD.

Glad I read the thread.

Funny, I just cancelled it. Change of heart. Seriously this site gives it a 2 out of five for PQ. Is it that bad?

Yes 2/5 is bad, but i will say that the film should deserve at least a 3. I own the film and have seen it a hand full of times on blu and to me it Def looks clear and yes better than dvd. Dont get me wrong its not perfect and yes it can be better but overall for the price, just go with the Blu....

I think this site's rating system is a bit uneven. For a catalog title, there should be two ratings given: one compared to current movie releases and one compared to its former release.

I give you an example:
The Other Guys: 4.5/5 compared to other new movies.
Kickboxer: 2/5 compared to new movies, but 4/5 compared to its former DVD/LD releases.

Or am I not making sense?

In the end I ordered Kickboxer 1&2 in a four film pack off of Amazon for $6.99. Plus the Blu-ray.

I have the four film pack now and was surprised to see that even though the 1st film was 4.3 ratio the PQ was actually quite good for a DVD.

Hopefully the BD version will be a lot better. Haven't perused it yet!
