If you never seen Dexter start with season 1 unless you want to have all the major cliffhangers spoiled. It's the worst time ever to start watching the show there's seven seasons leading to what's happening now.

Yes. We don't now, but in the future we may have solid medical proof to support my belief.

[Show spoiler]

I love the taste of asparagus, always have. My sister hates it, always has. No life experience will ever change our difference there. Further, I don't believe that a life experience caused our difference.

Wiring IMO

The evidence that causes me to believe that serial killers are wired differently is because there have been jillions () of people who have experienced extreme childhood trauma and abuse, yet choose not to participate in violence themselves. In fact, some choose a path in life or career with the goal of helping others. The exact opposite of serial killers.

Regarding wiring, let's look at phobias. Many people have a phobia about something that they have never had a bad experience with, or even come in contact with.

My Dad has never had a bad experience with water his entire life. Yet, get him near water deeper than his ankle and he panics to the point that he is almost dangerous to himself. He was never abused and has never had a near drowning experience because he has never gotten near water. He cant even approach a swift moving stream bank for fear that it will pull him in.

My brain is poorly/faultily wired as well. I enjoy hobbies (motorcycle racing) that are extremely life threatening everytime I participate. The logical part of my brain realizes how stupid, selfish, irresposible and dangerous it is. The emotional part of my brain gets such a high (almost spiritual in it's depth) that it overrides the logical part, and I continue to participate in the same insane behavior decade after decade. Despite plenty of evidence encouraging me to make an intelligent choice, I continue to make the wrong one. I make the wrong choice because speed is intoxicating. Why am I intoxicated by something that I should fear? It makes no sense. Defective (mild) wiring.

Oddly enough, I was taught how to ride a motorcycle by my Dad, the guy who is afraid of standing water.

I believe that there are people with more severe miswirings than mine.

I know a guy who never hunted as a child. He had a privelaged childhood and was never abused. He took up the hobby as an adult. Now he loves killing animals. He does not eat his prey. He just loves, loves, loves killing animals. He is passionate about killing animals. He gets a high from the killing. Where did he get that from? I don't know. I suspect wiring.

I know another guy who was taken on hunting trips as a child. It was the norm in his family to hunt and eat deer. They needed the food. There was no high involved. He was taught to respect the animals. To make clean fast kills and ensure that the animal did not suffer. Now, as an adult he can't tolerate any violence against any animals. Even fake violence portrayed in movies is too much for him. He has chosen a vegan lifestyle. Why did he break away from his norm and go a different direction? I don't know. I suspect wiring.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. A lot of it is just "wiring" or genetics. But I'd also say there's a societal component to psychotic behavior. Many people out there probably would kill, steal or otherwise exhibit this behavior if here were no societal rules curbing it or if it were actually encouraged.

Look at Rwanda or other nations involved in genocides. There's no reason to believe the people of those countries were predisposed to carry out horrific acts, but they did by the millions, often willingly. The Millgram Experiment was a good example of people having little problem throwing out any morals they may have should they feel they cannot be held responsible for their potentially deadly actions.

I was only commenting on serial killers. I believe they are wired to enjoy the killing itself. Killing for the sake of killing. Watching life leave their victim is the high. The act is the rush.

Yes, there are other people who have other motives, momentary rage, jealousy, revenge, self preservation, greed, mob mentality, peer pressure, politcs etc. But their goals are met by the elimination of their victim, whereas the serial killers goals are met by the enjoyment of the process.

Hard to believe it's been 8 years. I've been watching from day one. And prior to that I watched Six Feet Under, which Michael C. Hall starred in. Seems weird now but Dexter and Doakes were gay lovers in Six Feet Under. I wonder what's next for Michael C. Hall. For 12 years now he's devoted pretty much his entire career to Six Feet Under and Dexter, both outstanding series.

No they weren't. You're talking about two completely different actors.

On NPR he said he digged in deeper into his family tree and found out something like 10 ancestors of his within the past couple 150 years or so had murdered someone, one of them being Lizzie Borden. While the researcher himself had never carried out any real crimes he did interview friends and family and discovered to his surprise that he those around him had a much lower opinion of him than he thought. Many of the negative things they had to say about him were tell tale signs of a psychopath.
What are the telltale signs of a psycho?

Thanks for the in-depth reply. The brain is such a wacky thing. Too bad it's not more profitable to study it. If we spent 1/4 of what we spend on defense grants on psycholgy, we might be on the way to understanding what makes humans tick.

Great episode this week. Loving the way the season is unfolding. When she said goodbye to Finn I knew something was about to go down.

When everything was moving in slow motion, and Deb was walking towards Dexter in slow motion with that sad smile - I thought for sure she was going to shoot him.

I thought she would shoot him, then she would get shot and die and Dexter's secret would be safe - and Dexter would be easy prey, wounded, sedated and in the hospital as the Brain Surgeon came for him.

Instead, next week, we'll continue with the therapy sessions. Oh well.

Who thinks dexter might be the brain surgeon? Maybe this is his elaborate scheme to lure in dr Vogel upon finding out she assisted in why he does what he does? Perhaps he discovered her while investigating detective Matthews (who basically knows who dexter is) and found tapes and transcripts of Vogel and Harry? This then propagated dexter to devise a scheme to get her close and eventually kill her for creating him.

The season has only been so-so for me. Tonight's episode was the first of the season that I really enjoyed though. Hopefully things continue to get interesting.
