Am I missing something? From Box Office Mojo....

Budget $190,000,000

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $78,661,000 41.6%
+ Foreign: $110,300,000 58.4%
= Worldwide: $188,961,000

I know there's a marketing budget, but the rest of the money this makes in theaters and then on Blu-ray/DVD should ensure it doesn't lose money.

A sequel will have to have a leaner budget though.

making its production budget back is not considered successful or profitable. so yes, you are missing something. by your logic Green Lantern was profitable, and nobody seemed to argue that one.

China is a huge market...gigantic! It'll add $50M+ to the box-office and Japan will add $25M. Are you forgetting what this film is about? This stuff was practically made for Asian markets.

The box-office for China is up 36% over last year and is predicted to overtake North America within the next decade. Doesn't sound like a small market to me.

I think in my opinion, it's premature to be talking about a sequel since the movie doesn't come out for another 9 months! I mean come on let us see some damn footage already!!!

How about a few movies to introduce the different monsters. Is it just me or does it seem a little to soon to jump right into a "D.A.M." type film. I don't know maybe im wrong......

i guess well have to wait and see, im not as optimistic about it as you are. i meant small as in not big enough to double what its made so far, which still would just barely be cutting it.

I'm on the box-office.com forums and members located in China say it's going to be huge. Keep in mind, it'll still make $20M more here in the U.S. and that will get added to the $75M from China and Japan. Also, probably $3M more in Russia. Who knows how much it will do in the other current markets. Boxofficmojo.com hasn't updated a lot of those markets since 7/21.

Wow! Great news! Love the new Godzilla design, and can't wait to see how some of the other classic monsters look! Especially Mothra!

Not to mention although there are huge numbers of Godzilla fans world wide. I don't think there is a bigger fan base for Godzilla than Asia. If this is done right there will be a sequel.
