People want to see the characters they love return, and it's usually when you do that that people flock back to theaters. Put that with the guy who made the two last 'Star Trek' films, which were both wildly popular with critics and general audiences, you've struck gold. No way these make less than the prequels. Many analysts are already predicting an easy $1 billion take, at minimum, for 'Episode VII'.
Ford came back for Indy 4, and it's one of the most hated movies ever made.

Only on the internet... That movie made $786,636,033 worldwide. If people hated it that much, it never would have made that much money.

It's even got 78% on Rotten Tomatoes! I dislike the film, but it's the victim of much hyperbole.

Almost doubling an estimated $185m budget for a 4th film, in a series, on US boxoffice alone, doesn't qualify as "one of the most hated movies ever made", short of one's opinion.

Episode VII will dominate. Book it.

I remember critics were unkind to it early on.

Exactly. Regardless of how some people may feel about the film, because yes, it split the fanbase down the middle, it did incredibly well for itself. The thing is, the people who dislike the film are louder than those who are, and they're the ones online you hear from the most. People get tired of trying to defend things they like when they're criticized. That hyperbole about how terrible that movie supposedly is blows my mind.

If it got a 78% from critics in the end, it doesn't make them that unkind to it...

Avengers is already slotted for the first week of May, and the next three years after that are Marvel films first week of May too. SW is riding shotgun already. If the prequels hadn't shit the bed it might be the other way around. Why crowd May with both films when Avengers can do it on its own? If they spread it out into June or July Disney can own most of the summer. It'll be interesting to see when WB slot Superman/Batman that summer.

Three weeks after 'The Avengers' is crowding the market? It won't be July either, 'Pirates 5' already has that month, by that logic.

If you think the Indy 4 hate was out of line just wait until this movie hits.

Just because people set out to hate things before it hits doesn't make it warranted. Of course some fans are going to hate it, they've already decided they will. I'm a 'Star Wars' fan, but I'll be the first to admit that the fanbase it absolutely insane, and it's really off putting. So much so for a long time I didn't want to be a part of it.

I wouldn't guarantee Pirates 5 a shoe in for owning the month of July. Pirates 4 was the worst domestically in the box office and if The Lone Ranger was any indication it could be that Johnny Deep isn't as popular of a character anymore. I may be nuts and I'll eat crow if I wrong but unless Pirates 5 can re-invent itself, I think that the Pirates franchise will start to lose in popularity.

They announced Star Wars Celebration VII will be in Anaheim, California, from April 16-19, 2015, timed with the release of Episode VII.

I went to I, II, and III, as they accompanied the 3 prequels, but skipped the rest. I'm tempted to go to this one, but doubt I can afford to splurge on a trip to CA... who wants to give me a couple hundred dollars for travel and hotel?

It's not out for another two years, how could you possibly know if it'll be hated unless you're psychic?

Please tell me you're psychic so you can help me win the lottery lol

Yeah, I don't care about the SW fanbase anymore either. They praise weird stuff like "It's a trap", and ignore other things. It's got worse lately.

Regardless of whether you or I think Episode VII will be great, there will be many people who will hate on the film for their own various reasons.

As they say...you can't please them all.

just to clarify here...it made that much because the level of anticipation was through the stratosphere. We all were just happy to see Ford back in the saddle and willing to pay for that alone. If Id have known how much of a bag of shit that movie was beforehand, it wouldnt have gotten my money. Id imagine many Indy fans feel the same way.

I dont really care for RT either....critics gave Iron Man 3 high praise and it sucked ass through a straw, just a monumental disappointment. Again, coming off the Avengers and coupled with Downeys star power, many fans (like me) happily plopped down $10 for IM3. You take away the "disappointed dollars" and IM3 makes way less than its real-world take IMO

Of course it's been slotted, meaning it will move. 4 Billion, with a 'B', that means Star Wars will get it's pick of the litter. It's just simple economics. We'll see in little less than 2 years.

LOL! I'm sure if you "took away 'disappointed dollars' " for virually any business you'd be left with a totally different balance sheet. Unfortunately nobody recognizes 'disappointed dollars', so it can be filed under: Moot Point.
