Agree'd. Naked Lunch looks terrific on blu-ray and while the movie itself was hard to understand, I loved it. Really hope we see a Shivers/Rabid/The Brood/Scanners box set from them before the year is out.

You know, I've gotta say, even though The Double Life didn't quite "grab" me like I was expecting, it hasn't dampened any of my desire to watch The Three Colors Trilogy. It also left more of an impression on me than I initially thought, since I've been thinking about it a lot in the hours since it finished.

Maybe my initial reaction was simply a case of skewed expectations?

It's possible, especially when you see all of the rave for it on this forum. It's happened to me with other titles, as well.

All I know is that I watched it last winter and when I finished it, I was left with my mouth open. I wanted more! I ended up watching it again that next day.

It truly is my favorite film of all time. So much about it is great, unique, and memorable.

Same for me. Friend of mine passed on his AE DVD when he was getting the film on Criterion. I watched it and was like...I dunno. I do like Blue and Red from the colors trilogy (haven't seen White), but yeah in general I like a little more drama in my movies, I guess

Hello everyone,

Reviews of The Earrings of Madame de... and To Be or Not to Be coming up today.

1. The latter you can pre-order with confidence. The transfer is beautiful, from the same restoration the Canal release used.

2. The former I would like to suggest that you rent first before considering a purchase. The transfer is problematic.

Our reviews will be up shortly.

Three colours are much better films. Even though I enjoyed watching Double Life of Veronique it didn't blow me away like three colours did (and I like them all equally).

Kudos to Criterion for bringing this film to North America for people to see it restored. Do not miss it, folks

Barnes & Noble My Barnes & Noble haul for July 29, 2013

Just when I thought I was done, I wasn't.

My 8th haul occurred on Monday afternoon and I got shot down for trying to use the 5/50 coupon FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!

I should have known better but I dealt with one of the most stringent CSRs in history. She remembered I came in a week ago with coupons including the 5/50 coupon and immediately called the manager (who has shot me down many times at this particular location) and after 3 seconds said I couldn't use the coupon. I felt upset but after a few minutes realized that I was getting away with this coupon on every trip prior to this (and that is 7 trips). I went ahead anyway and bought the 3 titles I wanted but had to suck it all up realizing that I cannot be "entitled" every time I buy Criterions at B&N. I guess I could have just not gone in today, and I guess I can always return these and try again at another store with the $5 coupon, but I'm just going to accept it. Once you start feeling entitled to using these coupons every time is when you really have gone too far.

So I bought:

12 Angry Men (BD) ($17.99)
Summer Hours (BD) ($17.99)
Downhill Racer (DVD) (13.49)

(notice no Criterion stickers on any of these! Boooooo!)

Anyone else get caught trying to use the 5/50 coupon more than once with a tough CSR? Let me know.

This is one of the few advantages of living in America at least for me, that I can buy Criterions for a cheaper price using coupons at a bookstore chain that soon may go out of business.
why should they go out of business?

So I bought:
12 Angry Men (BD) ($17.99)
Summer Hours (BD) ($17.99)
these are still great prices for criterion movies. im paying 205$ for my last B&N order including tax and all fee, with only 8 criterion blus.
price would be even worse if i would have to order them seperatly at amazon.com for 19,99$ each.

but still i got 28 criterions so far(with the 8 that are still on their way and will probably need another month or so to arrive ),
all bought in the past 4-5 months (+ a few more from other labels like MoC)

i watched M (the german universum release) yesterday, awesome movie ! really a movie everyone should have at least seen once.

might get more of Langs Movies in the future (ministry of fear criterion and Dr Mabuse from Moc)

saving up money now for the next sale. (badlands , days of heaven, night of the hunter, godard movies )

its been a trend lately here with major booksellers... borders and joseph beth booksellers (local chain) all went out of biz (although in the latter, closed most of their stores) in the last few years... seems like amazon has taken over the market in general...b&n recently layed off all their media managers and the ceo resigned a few weeks ago too... turbulent waters it seems like.

its true, $17.99 is still a good price... with the 50% criterion sales that occur twice a year on their website, you're still paying $19.99 for each title...and amazon usually gets it to around $19.99 also during their criterion sales...seeing that you're paying like $25 each with taxes/fees, it does put things back into perspective and makes me appreciate my savings here in the states...it might be best if you found a penpal or shopping friend here who can buy you the titles for $10 or $15 (with 8/40 coupons if possible) and then work out a deal for him/her to ship you the titles (though shipping is what will cost a lot).

ok, going to bed now again... ttyl.

My first order of criterion blu-rays from B&N arrived today (shipped on 13th of july): Carlos, Seven Samurai, The Battle of Algiers, The 400 Blows and The Double Life of Veronique - yes, a digipak-order, some suffered a little bit und are slightly used, but I didn't have to pay import tax unlike my last orders from amazon.com containing 5 or 6 criterions. Paid $127.39 (100,41 €) for this order at B&N - a great deal!

Such a shame! Here's hoping that the Gaumont release (which lists English subtitles) is better - do you know if Criterion used the recent 2K restoration?

Thank you, Pro-B! I always love these WWII-era Criterion titles, and I'm compelled to see this after revisiting The Great Dictator recently.

I asked one of the Barnes & Nobles clerks about this last week (the clerk whom I've mentioned here before who always wears a miniskirt), and she told me that everything was going well with the stores at the moment, despite the news stories about the CEO. Of course, they may be instructed to give this assurance to customers.

Quite honestly, though, I would probably not set foot in Barnes & Noble if not for their media section and the Criterion sales. They charge MSRP for most of their books, and I can buy new hardcovers on Amazon for a third of the price. I did buy a copy of Stephen King's new novel, Joyland, at the store a few weeks back, but they only had one copy on the day of release, and they had to go looking around in the back of the store to get it for me. One copy of a new Stephen King novel on the day of release? I'm not sure what the world is coming to.
