Not sure if Nashville would be in a box set. It is too strong of a title. I could see an Altman box with 70's 20th Century Fox titles A Wedding, Quintet, A Perfect Couple and H.E.A.L.T.H.

Popeye completely ruined Shelly Duvall for me. Even watching The Shining a couple years ago was kind of tough.

3 Women may have finally exorcized the last of those ghosts but it definitely took a while.

I respect Popeye. It's just sooo esoteric. There is really nothing like it, for better or for worse.

PLUS, without it's use of "He Needs Me", Punch Drunk Love would have not been the same.

Shelley Duvall was the perfect actress to play Olive Oyl.

It's just that my threshold for listening to Olive Oyl usually does not extend longer than the average six-minute Popeye cartoon.

When we were leaving the theatre we noticed Curtis Hanson getting into his car parked on Wilshire Blvd.
Even the lady whom was humiliated at the gentleman's lounge? Must've been absolutely awesome.

Hurray for tolerance (or bad taste). I could not get enough of her Olive Oyle portrayal!

No. Gwen Welles passed away in 1993. Also Barbara Baxley passed away in 1990. Barbara Harris was not there, I don't remember Geraldine Chaplin being there either.

That was such an uncomfortable scene to watch. She was a hell of a sport for going through with it, nailing it too I might add.

Yeah it was and she was wonderful in the scene. In today's world it would have ended up on You Tube and she would have become famous...for a moment. It is interesting to watch "Nashville" now because the rules have changed for struggling artists and the pursuit of fame.

I've only seen Popeye and Quintet, and thus know absolutely NOTHING about Altman , but take it as a given that Nashville was his "one" film, even more than M*A*S*H.
Near the end of his career, every third film he did seemed to be the "Wacky Americana convention" Nashville formula (A Wedding, Health, Ready to Wear), so consider it pretty much the Director-in-a-Bottle movie.

(Oh, wait, I did see MASH, but I had nothing to put it in context to.)

There are those who Get It, and those who Don't.
Jules Pfeiffer was trying to homage the original comic strip; Robin & Shelley were trying to imitate the Dave Fleischer toons, and Altman...who the heck knows what he ever does?

And if it wasn't for Warner re-releasing the original Dave Fleischer B/W toons, we couldn't appreciate just how good a job Williams was doing of channeling Jack Fletcher's motor-mutter ad-libs.
(Even capturing the Fleischer-toon Popeye's little flip-jumpy movements. Williams was definitely in the Got It camp, and his performance was a labor of love.)

Shelley Duvall reminds you of Olive Oyl even when she ISN'T in the movie.
(Back before Robin Williams was discovered, it was originally going to be Dustin Hoffman & Lily Tomlin. The value of patience.)

However, I concede that Popeye will not be the Altman movie getting the Criterion.

I hate how YouTube can strip the context out of such scenes-turns it into a highlight reel or a freak show. Unfortunately, it would be the ONE thing the masses remember about the film.

My favorite is Two or Three Things I know about her...but that's probably the most "boring one" out of the lot.

Would you prefer a more lighter hearted film or a dryer, more politically charged film?

i hoped for something like a french mix of mizoguchi & suzuki.

maybe i should have gotten breathless first or vivre sa vie.
there are probably no fun movies like tokyo drifter from godard?

i do enjoy movies like Tokyo story, i dont have a problem with slow movies but une femme mariee was just not my thing. i found their talk about the jews and ausschwitz more interessting compared to the rest of the movie.

Band of Outsiders or, for the more adventurous, Pierrot Le Fou, are very enjoyable.

If you don't like "Band", then Maybe you should stop there.

All of the early 1960s Godard movies are golden. Not a boring moment in any of 'em.

This reminds me, there's a scene in Three Colors: White that shows the movie poster for Godard's Le Mépris (Contempt) as Karol is looking up at an apartment building window. It's a cool inclusion, because it strengthens the film's early undercurrents about France looking down on Poland at the time. Another example of how we can learn more about history from works of fiction than we can by reading textbooks.

I first dipped my foot into the Criterion pool with the Akira Kurosawa movies, and I collected several of them before branching out to anything else. After I bought a couple of Jean-Pierre Melville films, though, I gravitated over to French New Wave in a big hurry. I like everything, but my collection of French movies is quite prominent compared to everything else Criterion these days.

I completely unironically love the Popeye movie.

It's perfectly cast, the soundtrack is fantastic - my wife and I watch it quite regularly.

It might help to have read the original Thimble Theater newspaper comics to realize how right they got it (amazing cartoonist Jules Feiffer wrote the script!), but even before I had read them, I loved the movie.

Often called the Godard of the East, Japanese director Nagisa Oshima was one of the most provocative film artists of the twentieth century, and his works challenged and shocked the cinematic world for decades.
