I love the 2D cover, I'm definitely getting this even though I already have the theatrical version.

Looking forward to seeing the inevitable barrage of special editions and retailer exclusives for these.

This is one time I wish they wouldn't muddy up the cover wit their blue banner listing the contents -- it should be a paper sleeve like they do with steelbooks.

I think that's possible to happen. If you look at the "slip" picture on the site here, the banner doesn't go all the way around.

Yeah, I think it's likely to be a paper sleeve, just like the LOTR EE box set.

the only negative for me is that I wish the cover art was more book cover like the LOTR:EE versions. No biggie. I'm very much looking forward to the Appendices.

13 minutes probably won't make a signifigant improvement to be honest after the announcement of them breaking the originally two movie project into 3 movies I wasn't expecting any extended editions at all. Knowing this was coming I made the decision to not buy the previous release though I did breifly rent it. I won't buy the same movie twice in the same year. Im happy I waited since even if the 13 minutes adds nothing at all the movie this version will still be superior with a much better selection of extras. Granting this movie 5 Blu-Ray discs is quite awesome

If this gets re-released on a 2160p format with 48 frames per second down the road then ill double dip but for this year Im very glad I held off my money and making this my only purchase

So, is the extended version split over two discs?

In 3D yes
In 2D no

The movies length is only 182 minutes. Ten minutes shorter than Titanic which also was fit on one BD-50. Go take a look at its excellent transfer if you have a worries

Yep that's most likely going to be the one for me. The packaging will look pretty nice next to the gift set versions of the LOTR DVDs.

Who is willing to bet that the Extended Editions would have added alot more had this still been a two movie project

LOL

Where did I say I was worried about the transfer? I merely asked a simple question. Don't get so defensive.

I just noticed on that collector's set that the 2D version is apparently on a single disc, meaning the extras will take up two discs. If it's right of course.
