What kind of player and receiver are you using? There may be some other options available to you.

I have the Bose Lifestyle 48 receiver. It has no HDMI inputs and only one optical input. Currently I am having to switch out my optical cables when I am using my PS3 or when I am using my HD Cable box. However, I noticed that my HD cable box has digital coaxial outs and my receiver has them as well. So figured I could run the optical from the PS3 and the digital coaxial from the cable box. I don't want to lose any sound quality though from when I watch cable. I know that I could also just get an optical selector, but wanted to see if this was an option first.

You may get some lectures on Bose... if you're happy with it, ignore the people.

In this instance, I would probably recommend you look into the Bose VS-2 video enhancer. It should plug right into your Lifestyle system. It will allow you to use HDMI and since the PS3 decodes, you should gain access to Lossless audio... Are there any Bose stores near you where you can check it out?

Yeah, there are. I have been looking into that. There is a dealer near by that set up my system that has it. I will go check it out. Besides giving me the lossless audio through HDMI, does it improve anything else?

As for the Bose, I hear it all the time from people on hear. But for my set up, a 10x19 bonus room, it is perfect. Plus, I have all of the speakers mounted flush in the wall and the sub is in the ceiling, so no speakers showing.

like I said, as long as your happy, ignore them. The good thing about buying it locally is you can test it out and make sure it will do what you want without the hassle of mailing it back if you aren't happy. Lossless audio is a BIG difference over what you are used to hearing. I think it would be worth it for this alone. You would also have less cable mess to worry about.

Questions you would want answered:
1) Can your cable box output via HDMI?
2) If not, will you still be able to use the optical in (I think yes, but ask a Bose rep)
3) Do you have room for this little add-on unit?
4) Any issues with lossless audio in going this route via HDMI? (again I think no, but ask anyway).

and of course, you could just go optical with the PS3 and digital coax with your cable box... should have said yes, that's an option earlier I just bought a whole new setup to take advantage of lossless and don't regret it. I'm kind of jealous you might be able to get it with a small add-on piece. In the end, it's your decision. Enjoy

I too own Bose, since 1995. I took my re-enlistment bonus and bought a set of AM-5/AM-7 for $999. Because I lived in a small apartment in Hawaii they worked perfectly for me. I still use them today, except I mounted them from the ceiling. I still enjoy them today and because I have four rugrats having them on the ceiling is great thing - No pushed in cones! Someday I will upgrade and would like to look at some MB Quart, or Boston Acoustics.

Not to burst your bubble, but the Bose VS-2 video enhancer is only for video and to sync the audio and the video, it doesn't give you access to the lossless audio tracks...

And yes, please use the digital coaxial for your cable box. It will give you basically the same signal quality (if you want to get more info google digital coaxial vs optical).

So is there anything out there that can add on to my Bose unit and allow me to use HDMI and get lossless audio?

if you cant find it on the bose site, then i doubt it. they have thier "own" set up and ways of doing things that are really not universal.

Well that knocks #4 off the list. That's why I recommended you ask someone at Bose... sorry it won't help out.

Yeah, just got off the phone with my Bose rep. They do not make anything to help with the sound. Currently, there is no way to achieve lossless with a Bose receiver, unless it is one of their brand new ones that has the HDMI already.
