Default Next Gen Tomb Raider sequel confirmed to be "well into development"

A next gen sequel.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/08/...quel-confirmed

Quote:
Square Enix has confirmed it is working on a Tomb Raider sequel for the next generation of consoles.

In an open letter, the company's Western CEO Phil Rogers confirmed that a sequel has been in development for some time.

"I am also excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel – something you may have heard about recently," he wrote.

A sequel was pretty much guaranteed considering the game's success. We heard at Comic-Con this year that Dark Horse comics were producing a series set after the conclusion of the first game and designed to lead into the eventual follow-up.

Still, it's good to know for certain that the game is in development, that it's making good progress, and that it'll be on next-gen consoles everywhere. Be sure to let us know what you'd like to see in a sequel in the comments.
Despite my criticisms of the "first" game I do feel that there is potential for the sequel to be an EXCELLENT game.

I intended to start this thread in this section not in the main PS3 section.

My main criticism of the first game were the following:

1. Absolutely pointless multiplayer that was shoehorned in since SE executives were clearly using a marketting checklist.
If you INSIST on including multiplayer make it leaderboard based on Tomb Raiding challenges.

2. Not enough Tomb Raiding.

3. A TERRIBLE 3rd act that turned the game into a 3rd person shooter.

4. DLC was multiplayer only

The good news is that all of those things are fixible and if the CAN fix those things I feel TR2 can be a GREAT game.

I'm probably more than half way. At some village that is on fire at night. A few guys with Turrent guns in the level. Lots of water barrels. It definitely shifted to more straight up gunplay a chapter or so back.

Unfortunately that is where the game IMO suffered a severe drop in quality.

But nevertheless many people claimed TR was GotY and make no mistake what it does well it does REALLY well and if they can fix some of what was wrong in TR I have no doubt TR2 can be fantastic.

I was enjoying it quit a bit. Just got side tracked by other games and need to get back in the groove.

There is a lot of potential for the sequel.

Just started to get into this PS3 game. It's been on my game catch up list for awhile. So far, so impressed.

If you guys play this with surround sound, you're in for a treat.

As for PS4 sequel, I'm down for that.

As a huge fan of the originals, this will be a must have for me. Though, since I don't have a PS3, I'm not sure If I'll ever get around to playing the most recent one first. Sounds like it will be like picking up the game in the middle of the story. Which kind of sucks, but I don't think it will diminish my enjoyment of it all that much.

To me it seems kind of odd calling it Tomb Raider 2, since I played Tomb Raider 2 like 100 years ago, lol. Though I understand it's a revamp of the series.

It was a good game and I wouldn't read too much into the complaints... There is reason why it was one of the top 5 rated games that came out this year. :-)

Shock horror, I have to agree with Merrick. Too much shooting and not enough Tomb raiding and puzzles to solve. I would prefer going back in time to the "How the fudge am I going to get up there days"

Don't get me wrong, loved the game and it was a good reboot, but it didn't feel like TR

Once you got to Shantytown the game just became Gears of Croft and that really is what affected my perception of the game. I got tired of the constant firefights when all I wanted to do was explore. It just became a horde mode of throwing enemy after enemy after you.

However, the shipwreck portion was the highlight of the 2nd half of the game and honestly was the best part of the game.

My main complaint about multiplayer is that they tied achievements/trophies to it. Not so much the principle of it.

This...

My complaint is that after you finish the game there is no reason to replay the game, eg. No New Game+ & there was no chapter select!

Oh yeah! There was that too.

All games that involve upgrading weapons/stats should have a New Game+ mode. There are some exceptions, but after I beat a game the hard way I love being able to do a second playthrough in which the game becomes my "playground" per se.

I am glad they are incorporating this feature into the Deus Ex directors cut.

Thanks for the warning. That is something i was hoping for. You can fast travel in game. I don't know where I'm at but I am re-visiting areas to try & upgrade more skills.

So I guess the only way to fully upgrade is by buying DLC then? I ask because some areas become "fully hunted" with no chance of extra XP

Don't worry I wouldn't. As much as I loved the originals, I would have to play and decide for myself the merits of a newer version. Anyway, I've heard mostly good things about it. As long as it has it's signature tomb raiding, and trap avoiding. And with modern day graphics to boot. I'm pretty certain I would like it.

Actually, if the next Tomb Raider game is too far off into the future, I just might play the latest one first if it's possible to download it to the PS4. But it's hard saying, because I'm going to be wanting to play the PS4 games I have pre-ordered. Just depends on the timing, and what I'm in the mood to do I guess. I could always go back later and play the ones I didn't get to play. Kind of backwards, but that's alright. If I'm hungry for Tomb Raiding, it will still be new tombs for me to raid even though they are out of order.

It won't be compatible with PS4.

PS4 is not backwards compatible with PS3.

If you want to play TR you will have to play it on current gen or PC.

I'd agree with the Tomb Raiding, this game needed more of it. I ended up paying 5 bucks for someone's download code for the extra tomb just to do more. That and a new game+ would have been great. I'm not too into multiplayer so I can't comment on that part of it but overall I did like this game

In the physical media format, this is true. Who knows what PS3 titles Sony has planned for their streaming cloud service.

Less action, more exploring. They need to have Lara do more tomb raiding, platforming and less gunwork.

Its too bad this takes place soon after TR. I was hoping to jump into the future about 7-10 years when she's older and more established

Bring back the handstand and swan dive! Those added little to gameplay but were TR mainstays for me. It always brought back good memories being able to pull those off, especially swan diving off a cliff into water below.
