Default I'm getting really sick of these parody/spoof movies Hollywood is chucking out.

I'm just getting annoyed by the fact that in the Hollywood of today, they just won't stop shoving these spoof movies down our throats. I think it all started with the original Scary Movie, whos tagline was "No mercy. No shame. No sequel." It seemed like a bit of harmless fun, like most comedies. It may have spoofed a few movies but I wouldn't have expected a sequel, but one year later, it was revealed that..."they lied" (wink, wink). Then 3 and 4 came out and I thought that was it for the franchise...but noooo, theres a new one coming out this summer, why, why Wienstein and Dimension, why? And it doesn't stop there. FOX has also gotten in on the action with Date Movie, Epic Movie (hardly as epic as it sounds) and Meet The Spartins. Columbia is in on it too with Not Another Teen Movie. Even independent studios churn out total s*it like My Big Fat Independent Movie (hmmm...I don't know what Greek wedding based movie it's parodying). Now, our most recent release, Superhero Movie looks like a box office bomb worldwide. The only way the movie can recoop its losses is by DVD and BD rental and sales. Please Hollywood, stop having no shame in your movies. I want movies that are Golden Era-esque in style and substance, not just the same old s*it like this. I know, there have been rather good movies in the era we're in now, but there are so many craptacular movies (especially the comedies, with the exception of Borat and a few others), it's just insanity. This isn't just a plea for you to stop the spoof, but to settle up and fly straight. Okay, I think I ranted long enough on those topics, give me your thoughts on this.

I agree with what you said about needing more good/original movies out of Hollywood. But even in the Golden Era I'm pretty sure for every Citizen Kane there were dozens of movies people from that era would of rather not seen.

I like the older spoof movies, and can get into the first two Scary Movies, but after that they got REAL lame, REAL quick. All the Naked Guns are classic and I enjoyed Not Another Teen Movie, but Scary Movie 3 & 4 are abysmal and Date Movie is probably the worst movie I've ever seen. I actually read some pretty positive reviews of Superhero Movie. Since I like comic movies, I'll definitely check it out when it comes out on Blu-ray, but I'll probably skip it theatrically.

It's not just theater ticket sales, either. The DVD sales on these movies are phenomenal. Which just goes to show you that most Americans will buy anything.

It used to be that if you wanted to make a quick buck in America and had no talent, you released a rap album. Now you can make low-budget B-movies and make a mint. Plus, Hollywood thinks these movies are "en vogue". Hence why so many stars appear in them.

Here's how it goes.

Scary Movie 1 was a decent movie. Re-watching it now, the humour feels a bit outdated and hasn't aged very well. Overall, worth watching, but nothing spectacular. Easily the rudest of them all.

Scary Movie 2 is, in my opinion, easily the best SM to have ever been released. It has an incredibly fun plot, Cindy is at her very best, and with the possible exception of some scenes in SM3 (Queen Latifah having a fist fight with Tamarah, Michael Jackson's annual cameo appearance) I have never laughed more in a SM movie. SM2 contains some of the funniest scenes I've ever seen in a teen movie (including the memorable Exorcist parody). I'd buy the second it's released on Blu and not a second later.

Scary Movie 3 feels a lot more polished as a movie. They clearly put a lot more effort into it then they have done previously. It's very consistently good, and easily the second best movie in the SM franchise to be released. Maybe that's just my never-ending admiration for Leslie Nielson speaking, but it's hard to tell.

Scary Movie 4 is funny, and I remember enjoying it when I watched it at the cinemas; maybe that was just because it was on the big screen so everything (including humour) was enhanced. Unfortunately, apart from the parodies, it has all been seen before in this movie. The humour is getting old, as are many of the jokes. Fortunately, there are still some jokes that are just as funny as the jokes in previous movies (Cindy describing something very nasty with her hands, "I've been walking beside you the whole time...", etc.), but while SM2 and 3 have some incredibly childish jokes, those movies could make those incredibly childish jokes seem funny; unfortunately for SM4, it quite frequently fails to do that.

Epic Movie is an epic disaster. I didn't believe a comedy could be this bad until I saw this movie. I didn't believe a comedy could fail on almost every level until I saw this movie. Honestly, it's the equivalent of watching little school children repeat silly fart jokes they've just heard; only you're watching it on the big screen.

I've tried to like this film and see past its countless faults, but it's so spectacularly bad it's impossible to even be a guilty pleasure. Even if the plot was even slightly comprehensible, the actors don't seem to know what they're doing, or where they are, or even why they've allowed themselves to appear in such a travesty. What makes it even worse is that it's not actually epic at all. It clearly has a very low budget if you compare it to the actual movies it so terribly tries to parody.

I laughed at maybe 3 of the jokes, but I can honestly tell you right now that not a single one of those three didn't have something wrong with it. Not one. They had so many opportunities to make these jokes work, but they choose the absolute opposite way to go about doing it; it's as if they're actually purposely trying to ruin what might've been a decent joke by choosing exactly what's wrong for it and the scenario they've put it in.

There is no humour in Epic Movie; the "2 out of 6 writers from Scary Movie" just rely on mind-blowingly stupid, pathetic parodies to "entertain us", which are nothing like the parodies in the Scary Movie franchise. Those were actually funny. It's like they've taken the most extremely straight-forward, obvious aspects from well-known movies, added an unprecedented level of stupid childish homophobic potty humour and tried to make us laugh by showing the characters from Narnia, The Davinci Code and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory dancing to hip-hop music. Hilarity doesn't ensue. To add on to it, the parodies are barely even parodies. They're just merely terrible imitations of movies that prove no purpose other than to show that these idiots can imitate something. Badly.

When you can't even successfully parody something that actually deserved to be made, THAT's when you have a problem, and THAT's when you're faced with something like Epic Movie. If I was ever given this on DVD, I'd either sell it, or somehow bring it to life so I could kill it in the most brutal way possible.

Date Movie is pretty much the same. The only difference is that they actually put some effort into making it unbelievably stupid, and the result: I laughed at it from start to finish. Not at how awful it really is (well, partly), and not because it's actually genuinely funny, but because it's so unbelievably stupid and silly (intentional or unintentional, I'm not sure) that it's very, very hard not to laugh.

Considering how every ... Movie released since Scary Movie 4 has been bad, I've intentionally avoided Meet the Spartans and Superhero Movie, and fortunately for me, it really doesn't sound like I was missing anything.

It's the bang for the buck. Those movies don't earn a lot, but they cost little to make. But then again, look how popular Transformer is around here. It's of the same quality as far as cinema goes. POTC was highly popular (and enjoyable) fluff. There are still some pretty good movies to see. No Country For Old Men, Assassination of Jesse James, Superbad, King of California, just to name a few recent ones in a variety of genres on BD.

Post of the day.

Anyway, the biggest problem I have with these movies is that they're just not funny.

they're putting internet-quality pop-jokes onto film. it's disrepectful to the movies they mock (not that I'm saying it shouldn't be allowed) but even releasing these movies is offensive to the art.

there has been borderline NO decent comedies released in the last few years. blog/youtube jokes don't work on the big screen, it's a different beast. or it should be, anyway. tv is closer but even that requires something different.

the idea of making a classic is completely destroyed. even something that will last. I mean, how can anyone show their kid, or even someone from another country, one of these movies and expect them to get the "jokes"? .. and they aren't even jokes! it's like "hey, this is just like Pirates right? It's JACK SWALLOWS AHAHAHA -LOL- RIGHT?!?"

Infuriating to the point that I really try not to think about it. It's sad.

True. Just because the Internet is a pop culture phenominon, doesn't mean that it should be implemnted into movies. I mean, you know Meet The Spartans, it's just using the already outdated Chris Crocker "Leave Britney Alone" vid. I believe the movie was just a rushed job, already waiting until the Leave Britney Alone vid was at its peak. I mean, for TV shows like South Park, its alright, cos it only takes a few days to animate, but for a movie, it might already be stale.

I want to roam around the theater whilst these movies are playing and should I hear the slightest guffaw at an overused, cheap joke, steal upon the culprit and smack them directly on the head. My plan is erred, as I would have to purchase a ticket to get in so I silently pout and post.

I FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT THESE SPOOF FILMS TODAY AS WELL!

The only REAL great spoof films were made by Mel Brooks. I think they are all trying to steal his secret sauce and failing. It's redundant.

I dunno. I thought the Hot Shots movies were great spoof films. UHF, while not technically a spoof film, also did a really good job spoofing popular movies of the time.

If you're getting sick of them, DON'T GO AND SEE THEM OR RENT THEM. As long as they make money, studios will keep churnin' them out.
