So I went when the doors opened. I was there to pick up my pre-order, but decided to check out the other ones. I was the only one there examining all of them, there must have been around 30 divided in 3 different locations.

I have a track record of never getting a mint steelbook so I tried to make sure it looked great... 30 minutes later. I went outside to open it and there was a nick at the top right and a scrape on the back.

I've never done this before, but I went back to exchange (that's what everybody seems to do) and went for another... 10 minutes later. I went to customer service. I opened the other one, but it wasn't perfect either. Had all of these ripple dents at the top. I chose the lesser of two evils and stuck with my first. I feel like a jerk because I opened two, but I had to test the odds.

So while I was there spending time to pick the second, I saw a Finding Nemo Viva Metalpak for $29.99, only one left. Decided to buy it anyway. Opened it up and it was in mint shape. Also trade and saved a DVD to get 'The Day After Tomorrow' for $2.99.

The moral of the story is: "You Win Some, You Lose Some".

Yeah, when Hunger Games was $19.99 I picked one and the back had all of these dents like some one was puncturing it with a butterknife. I went to exchange and the person at customer service said I could open some until I'm satisfied. I was like... okay.

There were only three left, we opened one and it was just as bad. One of them you can see the dents underneath the swrinkwrap. The last one was mint, but the spine was a bit off from the case.

Why can't I get mint steelbooks damn it?!

I think it mainly has something to do with because between the uk and Germany and a few other places in eurpoe pretty much every movie is getting a steelbook release now vs like 2+ years ago when a steelbook was a rare treat and so the people making the steelbooks have had to cut coners to keep up with it all.

looks like after opening mine up there was 1 tiny chip back lower edge that was under the paper. oh well nothing is ever 100% with these things.

if u have a really fine tip sharpie the same colour as the paint u can hit the scrachs or chips and make them less noticeable unless looking close up.

Well, it's confirmed by Future Shop's Head Office Product Buyer that Universal Pictures went for MetalPak because Scanavo's Steelbook factory plants were overloaded with other Steelbook orders.
