I know it isn't Criterions job to fix what other studios drop the ball on, I'm just suprised they haven't WANTED to. Afterall, they did it for Traffic and Dazed and Confused. Neither of which are anywhere near as popular as the Wes Anderson Criterion releases.
People ***** and moan about how Anderson is the worst thing to happen to Criterion collection and how much they hate him but I often check the sales ranks for Criterion blu's and there's almost always an Anderson release on the first page.
And that's such a weak point that if more people saw it, it would've recieved a better blu-ray release. Most hollywood films that makes shit loads of money at the box office recieve mediocre to poor special features. As for Moonrise Kingdom, the American limited release occurred on May 25, and set a record for the best per-theater-average for a non-animated movie by grossing an average of $130,752 in four theaters.
Bottle Rocket Budget = $7 million
Bottle Rocket Gross = $1,040,879
Rushmore Budget = $20 million
Rushmore Gross = $17,105,219
The Royal Tenenbaums Budget = $21 million
The Royal Tenenbaums Gross = $71,441,250
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Budget = $50 million
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Gross = $34,808,403
The Darjeeling Limited Budget = $17.5 million
The Darjeeling Limited Gross = $35,078,918
Fantastic Mr. Fox Budget = $40 million
Fantastic Mr. Fox Gross = $46,471,023
4 of Wes Andersons 7 films didn't make their budget back (including Moonrise Kingdom), 1 only JUST made it's budget back and only 2 of his 7 films have actually been somewhat of a hit. They didn't even set a record like Moonrise Kingdom did which is impressive.
How much Moonrise Kingdom made is irrelevant. They're aware that Moonrise Kingdom frequently tops peoples lists of best films of 2012 and that it's recieved widespread critial acclaim whether you or plenty of others agree with it or not, it's true, they're aware that Wes Anderson fans have grown accustomed to the kind of special features treatment we've been getting from Criterion, they're aware that we're really disappointed with what we got for Fantastic Mr. Fox and yet they go ahead and give us a truly dismal selection of special features to the point of it being an almost barebones release.
I've got to assume they're planning to do what they did for Traffic and Dazed and Confused and also let Criterion do their release in the near future because what we got from them is truly laughable. It would make sense if that's their plans. By giving us a truly pathetic selection of special features they would've known would bug us, they know that when Criterion releases theirs that will no doubt be packed full of goodies, people will flock to that release after they've already made a pretty penny with people who either don't care about special features, don't know much or anything about Criterion or were too impatient like myself. Either way that would be a good way to keep their relationship healthy.
Anyway, who knows what will happen. This is all just what I'm thinking. I know plenty of people hate Wes Anderson and to be honest I can understand why but I can't help liking him and being irritated by those two releases lacking in the special features department. Again, I don't necessarily care about them being released by Criterion or whoever, I care about getting good special features and Criterion are the ones who actually do bother to give his movies what they deserve for us to enjoy.
