Default PS3 DVD picture scaling not filling screen

Hey, quick question.

I've just noticed that when I watch a DVD on my PS3 the picture is not scaling to the full screen size (black bars on all four sides). My settings have not been tampered with and appear to still be in line. Has, or is anybody having this problem and have you figured out how to correct it?

Thanks in advance.

You are probalby watching a fullscreen DVD on a widescreen TV, and your settings are mantaining the correct aspect ratio.

Unfortunately it is happening on all of my DVDs. I've tested three so far. I only purchase widescreen... granted what I want to watch tonight is a rental.

Some older DVDs aren't anamorphic widescreen. For example, my copy of "10 Things I Hate About You" (don't knock it) is widescreen, but is hardcoded in a 4:3 format. It is before 16:9 TVs became widespread.

However, if it is happening with all of your DVDs I would check the settings on your PS3. Try resetting to default? Do you use HDMI? Maybe you can reset and have it auto-detect settings.

Check the DVD Upscaling setting on your PS3. It is probably set to Normal instead to Zoom.

Thank you Iceman. My DVD upscaling was on Double Scale rather then Full Screen. Strange that I have not touched this setting since first setting it.

Oh well, I'm happy.

Again, thank you Iceman.

Movie time.

I have some old Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies that it does not load up fitting the screen on either 4 sides. I just use the screen option (in triangle menu) to stretch it.

Since there's a thread going on . . . what's the difference between double scale, full, and normal? I know double scale creates the box effect, but what purpose does that actually serve?

if you double scale it you get small black bars on the sides I belive, I think just normal or fullscreen is the best setting.

normal mode upscales to whatever output resolution your PS3 is set to---while keeping the original aspect of whatever you are watching.

full mode stretches anything to fit your entire screen basically no matter what, without much regard for aspect. Its pretty much for those who absolutely HATE black bars.

double scale is just that, it doubles the original resolution of whatever you are watching. Its there for people who don't mind losing some size in exchange for a bit sharper of a picture. Its not really a big deal on 720p TVs, but I've seen a decent amount of people who prefer it for their 1080p TVs.
