The signed copy is free when you order $100+ TT titles and that is the only way to get one.

When watching High Noon, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Quiet Man, Force of Evil, Rio Grande, etc, etc, the last thing I think of is "cheap and lazy". If any of those releases were put out by TT, everybody would be singing their praises.

But this is what TT and the studios came up with. They're comfortable with it. There's not much you or I can do about it. If folks don't like it, that's cool. But like I already said, it's time to move on.

What can I say guy? Olive was too cheap and lazy to include ENG subs, so none of those titles are in my collection. Just because you don't need 'em, doesn't mean it's the same for everyone else.

He later clarified that he meant US labels licensing titles from major studios. Which is still debatable...

Well, as Dex Robinson's post pointed out, the lack of subtitles is part of Olive's business model. I will let the issue rest with one quote which could just as easily apply to Olive:

Yeah, I read that and my eyes crossed and I missed a page.

But moving the goalposts of his hyperbole doesn't make it any less true.

TT has upped their game significantly in the last couple months, but their early releases were the definition of sloppy.

To suggest that Criterion and TT are the top and then it is a long way down before the dungheap of all the other labels is exactly why I hate the TT threads.

Lightbulb Simple Non-Hyperbolic Statement of Fact...

Except for Criterion and Twilight Time, no other stateside label has been getting Sony's 4k re-masters. Not Mill Creek. Not Image. Nada*.

* With that said, Mill Creek, despite its barebones double-feature approach has actually done a rather commendable job with several of Sony's other non-4k high-def masters...most notably Mr. Sardonicus (gorgeous), and When a Stranger Calls (++), and The Anderson Tapes (as good as that title will likely get given its era/film stock). And everything I've seen from Image has also been very high quality (e.g. The Collector, Against All Odds, and The Odessa File)...but like Mill Creek, just not state-of-the-art (although the price is certainly right).

I have no issue with that statement. Can you spot the difference from this statement?:

Look, I understand those complaints and I feel really bad for non-native English speakers or hearing-impaired people. But it's not just a cost situation. It creates a huge time lag to create subtitles and then there are a whole bunch of ancillary issues that pop up, like increased QC time, and it just doesn't make sense from a business perspective and in terms of trying to get our releases out in a timely manner. Also, we're not the only label that doesn't include subtitles on all of our releases. "
LOL oh boo hoo. Most other companies can find the time. That's a ridiculous excuse because they could certainly make time if they chose to do so. It's cool that they are excluding hearing impaired people, and seem to not care about it. Just another reason I won't support their half-assed efforts.

No. That is their business model. That's what they can afford and studios who license to them have no problem with it. TT pays upfront fees, unlike other cheap distributors who pay royalties as profits come in. So TT is taking a gamble everytime they release a title that it will sell. Since they break even around 1500 copies, the last 1500 is where the make their profit.

People are quick to judge because they have no knowledge or understanding of how individual companies work. They think they know it all, and that every company operates with the same overhead, profit margin, etc. That's just ignorance, and voicing an opinion based on nothing but speculation.

You don't have to like how they do business, but there's nothing you can do to change that. Either take it or leave it, because they are expanding to 4-5 titles a month, which means they have a whole lot more films under license.

So wait...

The company that does their own transfers/masters are the half-assed cheapskates and the company that slaps Sony/Fox files on a disc are the dedicated film lovers?

Tell Alice I said hi.

[Show spoiler](for the record, I have no quarrel with the notion that the folks at TT are film-lovers. but this notion that TT are old world watchmakers meticulously hand-crafting every gear while everybody else is cranking out mass-produced crap is simply absurd)

Modertaely, yeah. Unfortunately, because Olive is cheap, I can't enjoy High Noon, Body Snatchers or any other title they release. Which is unfortunate, when they have the ability like most other companies to offer simple subtitles. As well as 360 million people other in the world.
