A topic created for fun by some guy at another forum about what type of plasma panel Panasonic will create for 2014. Thought I would bring the discussion over here.....

What is Project Jupiter ...
Project Jupiter in my opinion is :

1. The 2014 generation of Panasonic Plasma display that is build from the ground up.

a) It will include television that have all the phosphors colors reworked - this allows for the widest color gamut possible.
b) Deeper black levels then ever - great contrast, brightness, gamma etc.
c) Very sharp still and motion images.
d) Very clean image - no noise or other artifacts.
e) Very energy efficient compared to older generations. (2012-2013 generation included)
f) At least OLED image quality.
g) Very thin compared to older generations. (2012-2013 generation included)
h) No image Burn-In or Image Retention.

2. It also means we will see the first quality desktop plasma computer monitors in sizes from 24" to over 30".

3. Very efficient plasma displays can now be used for tablets and laptops. (Panasonic to rely on tablet screens to return to profit)

D-Nice had mentioned something briefly and so had avjunkie- nothing concrete, more like hints about how it would make the VT50 hopefully look like old technology in comparison.

I'm hoping that whatever they release, the entry model for the new panel beats out the ZT60, the way the ST50 was putting out a better image than the VT30. It's that sort of step up in quality that will make them amazing displays.

The other thing to point out is that if Panasonic is not introducing OLED until 4K, there are going to be at least 2-3 years before those end up being cost competitive (inkjet printing tech could maybe shorten that gap, though). Essentially, they need a display that can kick the crap out of LG oled and Sammy, too, if they decide to step up to the plate with their Oled panel this year.

I'm really hoping this is the series next year that fully realizes plasma's potential. "

This could be all speculation. Panasonic may not even release an improved panels but then again...they just might.....Share your thoughts and opinions about what Panasonic AND Samsung could do for next year. Afterall I mentioned in a different thread that two very big guys in this community confirmed both companies are hard at work to make the best panel possible next year. 2013 was just an attempt. 2014 will be war.

I hope that was a huge exaggeration and pure conjecture. If I buy a vt60, and then the x model next year, the freaking x model looks better, i'll burn that place to the ground.

LOL I totally understand where you are coming from...which is why im holding off till next year. hopefully the zt60 can reach 40ftl with those awesome blacks and that awesome lourve filter

Anyways its all just speculation and fun at the same time. We all like to dream of what Panasonic will come up with. Who knows...maybe some of the stuff will come true EXCEPT the small 24-30" plasma screens...thats just stupid imo

( I doubt this. 98% of the DCI was pretty cool but unneccesary from what i have read/heard at this point in time

b) Deeper black levels then ever - great contrast, brightness, gamma etc.

(high probability of this happening. Im sure contrast would increase due to innovations in abl processing and overall brightness. Blacks could also get a tad darker as well. Maybe between a 500m and a Kuro 151/101 so like 0.0007-8 mll

c) Very sharp still and motion images.

( all 2013 displays were as sharp as can be and motion tracking because of the driving system was great so I dont think it would be increased...much. Maybe tweaked further on the zt70

d) Very clean image - no noise or other artifacts.

( again 2013 models were very good with clean images....possible reduction in dither though you can really only see dither super up close. Samsung had more dither but that was because of its larger pixels

e) Very energy efficient compared to older generations. (2012-2013 generation included)

(perhaps better energy efficient modes. doubt the isf day/nite modes would be affected by this


f) At least OLED image quality.

( 2014 models will be the closest we get to OLED picture from a plasma tv for sure


g) Very thin compared to older generations. (2012-2013 generation included)

( ive seen the zt60 online and it seems pretty thin. Could it get thinner? Maybe...maybe not. Dont really care. As long as it looks pretty

(I think the displays this year were pretty good overall about this. I have not heard a complaint about burn in or image retention

I think you meant the Kuro 151/111.
The KRP-500M and the Signature Elite 101 are basically the same monitor (aside from some HMDI and audio differences). They used the same panel but the 101 got the extra special hand picked parts treatment. They are both capable of getting MLL as low as .0004ftL.
I've owned both and would give the slight edge to the 101.

0.0004 is pretty impressive. Could it go deeper with a mod?

Those sets won't come cheap. Quite honestly, I don't want to see another line of expensive plasma TV's. They won't sell, Pioneer learned that the hard way. Its time for Panasonic to move on to OLED.

A 151 not a 500m or 101 , D-Nice will be @ my house in 2 weeks


Calibration Report

D-Nice calibrated my made in February 2009 151-FD. Black level in ISF-Night is 0.0002 (at least I hope I read that correctly).

He listed a few Reference movies, I watched The Matrix - wow!

BTW, with nothing playing, the only way to tell the set is on, is the blue LED.

The insider who mentioned "project Jupiter" has also said the end of plasma is very near for Panasonic. Given they cut R&D for plasma, I think the 2014s will be very similar to the 2013. Maybe a bit brighter, perhaps a bit better blacks, and the usual physical re-designs.

I dont think that is correct man....0.0002 is way too dark for a 151....even if the 500m and 101 got the kuro mods i dont think they read that low either....could be 0.002 mll. Which isnt bad either!

.0002 is correct , yes 3 zeros deep ,, there are several reports of .0003 for the 60" Pioneer 9Gs with 101 and 500M as low as .0001 .
I will give a full report , before and after MLL readings after D-Nice tweaks .
I have a 151 and a 101.

The Panasonic ZT60 MLL is .001 , no Plasma will ever match my tweaked Pioneer 9Gs
Bring on OLED.

PS , I am shooting for .00009 MLL on my 101
