Not a huge fan of Sleeping Beauty but admittedly I had a laugh at the expense of my friend. He purchased this OOP release from a third party Amazon seller on the American site. All told it cost him $95 (shipping included). I had to 'inform' him that the Diamond Edition is coming out next year.

So even though I am not a huge fan of Sleeping Beauty, I may have to buy this just for some good ole fashioned razzing .

I love how, in person, there are so many different points that reflect light. It's hypnotizing!
Dear god... I am too lazy to see if that's the one I have, but I am guessing I don't I have a Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray, but I don't think it is that one.

While far from being the worst effort from Disney on Blu-Ray, I'd argue that Sleeping Beauty is certainly not perfect. In particular there are some glaring anomalies from the restoration/post-processing work done, particularly evident in this screenshot, @ 10:13:

For comparison, here is the same frame from the 2003 DVD, above from the widescreen transfer and below from the 4:3 transfer, which devotes more resolution to the area of interest:

For me, the edges are distracting at many points throughout the movie, but in this shot everything just really falls apart. If they fixed this and did not cause any new problems I'd see an incentive to upgrade it. However I don't expect them to because they approach these titles as moving outlines to be repainted and composited rather than works to be respected and accurately transferred from film to video.
You for real? I can't see anything wrong with the Blu-ray transfer, assuming the topmost screencap is from that one. I think it looks beautiful...

Just watched my blu today because of this thread. Beautiful blu. Don't know what else they could do...even if its a re-release - I strongly encourage people who missed the first time to grab it this time. Here's hoping for a better looking steel.

Now that Disney's re-releasing the Platinum titles that released prior to the Diamond Edition line, I'm hoping we can put this trend to bed.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Diamond Editions have been great, they tend to have really excellent picture quality, and a good amount of quality extras, but the negative downside is that it's given Disney an excuse to do half-hearted rush jobs on the non-Diamond legacy titles.

In my opinion each and every Walt Disney Animation Studios release deserves the "Diamond Edition" treatment. Yes, even the ones that are bad. For example, The Black Cauldron is a TERRIBLE movie, but it represents a really interesting point in the history of the company. A bare-bones release for the movie would be tragic, but that's probably exactly what we'll get.

So for now, bring on the remaining Diamond Editions. The Jungle Book and Sleeping Beauty are coming down the pipe, which leaves One Hundred and One Dalmatians and the Diamond releases of Pinocchio and Fantasia. After that, though, how about treating the rest of the so-called "Classics" series as more than afterthoughts to be bundled with embarassing Direct-to-Video sequels.

Not that I'm holding my breath or anything, jut wishful thinking.

Just the name really. And the fact that most Platinum Editions had better special features than the newly released Diamond ones :/

So, Transfers are the same as well?
Sucks about the Special Features...

Which Movies have Platinum Releases?
Which of those were redone as Diamond?

It depends. Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and The Little Mermaid have gotten new transfers, while the Platinum transfers of Lady and the Tramp, Cinderella, Peter Pan and The Jungle Book have been reused. The transfer of Bambi is basically the old one, though they altered it a bit.

What he says is not true though. "Snow White" and "Beauty and the Beast" have gorgeous new and interactive bonus features and are even better than the previous Platinum Editions, although not all of the old DVD features are included.
Bambi, Lady and the Tramp, Cinderella, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid and The jungle Book don't have that much NEW content, but include all important stuff from the previous releases (sans picture galleries with the newer releases).

The only disappointing release in terms of bonus features is "The Lion King", because it doesn't have much new content and the DVD extras are only available via BD Live.

Of course I would've loved to get those gorgeous, interactive documentaries for all the new Diamond Editions, but even without them, they include (mostly) all the important stuff from the previous releases plus some additional goodies.
