I almost did a blind buy on this a few weeks ago during the B&N sale. Wish I had now.

I still haven't seen Seventh Seal... not sure why... just always something else to see.

The 1980s Top 20 will include the Roger Moore Bond flick, For Your Eyes Only, along with a myriad of teen flicks. You've been warned.
In fact, survey says that my Top 20 of the 1980s may only include one or two Criterion releases.

The 1990s Top 20 will probably include Point Break. You've been warned.
Some great flicks there... Race with the Devil, The Towering Inferno, and I love all the Roger Moore Bond films. He's my Bond since he was the first Bond for me... Live and Let Die is one of my all time favorite Bond movies.

As for 90's Criterion.. for me it starts with Chasing Amy. Not sure if I've metnione it here before, but this film helped me get through a rough time of being single. I've met Kevin a few times, but on the first meeting I got to talk to him for a few and told him what the film meant to me and how it helped me for many years. He told me that it was the same for him, the making of the movie was his release. (same kind of thing he says in the commentary and at his Q&As if you ask about Amy.

And for your 90's flick, I say... "Caught my first tube today, Sir."

Been there, done that too many times when I was single. heck, I still do it and I'm married... though the wife tends to yell.

Looks like I'll be picking up 400 Blows and Breathless soon.

edit: Found 400 Blows at Amazon for $28.00, from a buyer, but fulfilled by Amazon.

I'm going to continue putting off a purchase of The 400 Blows in hopes that The Adventures of Antoine Doinel will be released on Blu-ray someday.

I hope that my instincts serve me well.

There's a lot of debate about the picture quality of the Blu-ray, but I think that it looks superb, and that it does justice to what I saw on the big screen.

Tourist Trap gets lumped in with the other late 1970s low-budget throwaway horror films, as it probably should, but there's something really special about the movie and it has an extra little "oomph" and a certain gleeful spark that all of the other horror movies from that era lack. It's one of those horror flicks that you go into with low expectations, sort of like the many straight-to-video horror flicks these days, but it really takes you off guard. It's an odd thing of beauty. Speaking of beauty, it features Tanya Roberts (The Beastmaster, That '70s Show) in one of her early roles.
You may watch Tourist Trap and think to yourself that it's no big deal. I adore the film, though.

I'll never forget the first time I saw John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13. I was 11 years old, and I saw the movie one Sunday afternoon on a black-and-white TV in my bedroom while nobody else was at home. When the little girl went back to get her vanilla twist cone, I was floored by that scene.
"WTF? No way that just happened! Did that really just happenb? Whoah...that really happened!" So horrible, but so...so...awesome.
SOLD!!

Re: Assault: I couldn't imagine seeing that scene as a child. Shocked the hell out of me as a grown man. I'm still not even sure what to make of it, it still feels really, really sick (on behalf of Carpenter). Wasnt it Carornter who said something to the effect of "you have to get as close to the line between good and poor taste"? (Wording is probably off)

I'm a lot more confident from the 60s onwards, I haven't seen enough Altman though so he'll inevitably go into my watchlist for the 70s poll.

One film I'd like to recommend for those compiling their 70s picks is Kim Ki-young's Woman of Fire, available free on YouTube from the Korean Film Archive.
[Show spoiler]here
. The print isn't in great condition and there are burned in French subtitles, but you can view it in HD and the English YouTube subtitles are great quality, YouTube also lets you change the font size and colour enough to cover up the burned in French subs. For me this is right up there with Fassbinder and Almodovar in terms of somewhat modern melodrama (Neo Melodrama?), despite print damage, the film bursts right out of the screen with glorious colours, scorching you with it's insane psychosexual nastiness.
Yes, thank you for your honesty SimBelm. By no means are my lists the "definitive" ones, as I have, both, much to see for the first time and much to revisit. But I am over the moon about each and every film I put in those those polls. I can't wait for the 60s poll (only 2 more weeks!). However, I need to see some more Bresson before then.

EDIT: Missed the not good on promos line. plus she told me if something online is listed at more than 20% off msrp, then codes won't work. so how the H-E-Double hockey sticks do you use the d$%m coupons??

Don't forget they are both available directly from Criterion still, if anyone is looking for them...

When payday rolls around on September 13, I'm going to the Barnes & Noble site to pull the trigger on...

To Be or Not to Be
Repulsion
The Killing

I hope that nobody takes offense to this, but the recent Polanski discussions in this thread reminded me that I still haven't upgraded my Repulsion DVD.
