Oh, yeah, probably - I forgot about that one... but still, to have 3 new movies on the plate from Ghibli is at least some good news...

I love Nausicaa, Castle and Kiki, but after Kiki, I like all the Japanese themed movies much better than the others.

I don't know why I can't like How's.

You can't not like the soundtrack though!

What do you mean by liking 'Japanese themed movies'??

How dare you not like Howl's. Just kidding.

For me it is absolutely perfect, amazing theme music, fantastic end song. Perfect characters (the dog at the top of the steps is incredible). Mesmerising dream/flashback sequences, the finest colours ever seen in a Ghibli film can be found here. The ending is beautiful and I struggle not to cry every time I see it. :$

What is there not to like?

I'm sure he means the films with a Japanese setting rather than the fantasies set in lands clearly inspired by European cultures & architecture. I would take that to mean anything other than Howl's and Tales From Earthsea.

Porco Rosso wouldn't fit the bill either then.

Yes that's what I meant. Arrietty only has few Japanese character names with not much else, same with Ponyo. And most of Cat Returns its on fantasy world.
I'm not sure why I don't like Howl's. maybe it's because too many characters I didn't care about. The music and picture it's amazing.

Ha. Man. I didn't see people flipping in the most recent page, and I just got an email from Amazon and thought "I got the scoop!!"""

Anyway. I'm so excited about this. So. Excited. Plus, it meant I was able to cancel my Pom Poko order, then lump it on to this one and save $20.

But those three are clearly set in Japan and the main (human) characters are Japanese.

Miyazaki spent like a few months in a seaside town in Japan, to get inspired on the setting for Ponyo.

Just because some of these movies don't directly say they are set in Japan, doesn't mean they aren't.

Does anyone have more detailed information on the wind rises american release? i know itl be released by disney/touchstone in american theatres on 8th November but on what scale? i read a bit about its only opening in one theatre in LA and running for a week to qualify for the academy awards? or will the film be getting a full scale release in america on this date? i would have thought an english dub would have been done before this happened and with 2 months to go that doesn't seem likely.

Im hoping for a Uk screening soon

I know that, but the only scene that you can tell it's the one that she drives thru town passing the ship and when he walks in into the school and takes the shoes off. In Arrietty I don't even remember having anything Japanese besides one or 2 characters names.

I just love the sets that really pictures the culture, like Only Yesterday, Whispers and Poppy Hill. And off course Totoro, Pon Poko, Spirited, Mononoke etc...
This is one reason I'm so excited about Wind Rises.

Your Arrietty opinion is interesting as I remember watching the extras and they specifically chose to have the film set in Japan as opposed to England (where it was written and set). Presumably to get a better connection between the audience and film. Off the top of my head I don't remember many obvious Japanese things in it though - maybe they also had the Western release in mind too! (But Miyazaki says he doesn't do that)

What a great list of films.

Unrelated, other than your mention of Pom Poko; randomly reminded me that it contains brief female nudity! Did anyone else notice this? lol

Yes, in Japanese culture it's pretty normal, they don't consider animals or kids nudity a shocking thing. Watch Crayon Shin-chan.

You have a point with Arrietty, it really could be set anywhere in the world for all the cultural touches there are in the film, but Ponyo? It's clearly set in Japan and very much has a contemporary Japanese feel.

I am curious by the way you describe Arrietty: The only thing Japanese you recall were the names? It sounds to me like you watch these Ghibli titles in English? If so, there's an easy solution if you feel a film isn't coming across Japanese enough!

Seriously though, you're not the first person I've known who isn't a massive fan of most Ghibli releases post Spirited Away, it's not that unusual really!
