Short answer, it should not look distorted at all in 2D on a 2DHDTV. Check your blu ray player and TV settings. It should have an option to have 3D ON/off. Usually, with a 2D TV, it'll say "3D not detected" if it can't play the disc.

I've tested this theory with a 2DHDTV with a PS3 blu ray 3D player update, and Resident Evil Afterlife 3D blu ray back in 2010, played perfectly in 2D.
Usually all the 2d presentation is of a 3d films is the left or right image so it makes no difference. In some rare cases they films are actually different. The most notable example of this is Monster House which in 3d has essentially no DOF effect, whereas in 2d there is an extensive DOF effect present. Such instances are very rare though.

As for blu-rays you will find on shorter films the 2d and 3d will be on one disc whereas longer films will have a disc that will only work with a 3d setup and a separate 2d disc (there are of course some exceptions to this).
