This is not a big deal. Sony could have discontinued the 60GB version and is now planning on shipping a 80GB version which is exactly the same as the 60GB version accept for a larger hard drive. Prices on hard drives keep falling and Sony as time goes on might every 6 months to a year include a larger hard drive in the PS3. If Sony can purchase a 80GB hard drive for the same price or cheaper then the 60GB then by all means place a 80GB hard drive in the PS3 and sale it for $599. Maybe in October the PS3 will fall to $499 for the holiday season if the demand starts to slow a little.
** Where did the picture come from? Is the Picture real or a phone picture? ** I would love to see an Elite version of the PS3 for $799 that had a 250GB hard drive and 1080P/24 output when watching movies. P.S. It’s not a big deal if Sony every 6 moths to a year places a larger hard drive in the PS3. Anyone that owns a PS3 machine can always upgrade their hard drive. Over the years the PS3 machine will have improvements. Thanks to new models and improvements in technology things keep improving. If videogame systems did not keep improving over the years then people would still be using the Playstation one and first Xbox machine. People should be happy to see Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony come out with new and improved videogame systems. One can always sale their old videogame system or place it in a second room and purchase a new system if they feel they absolutely have to own a new model XBOX or Playstation system. |

![]() ** The following is rumors only and not based on facts ** If this rumored 80GB PS3 is real Sony most likely will discontinue SKU number 98000 (60GB version) after stores start getting low on inventory. The rumored 80GB PS3 is suppose to have a SKU number of 98004. Here is a link with possible other changes. Also the PS one and PS2 hardware emulation chip is being removed according to rumors. Software emulation will be used to keep prices low. If these rumors are true then most likely the 98000 PS3 will be out of production soon and in October the 80GB PS3 with more integrated circuits and less components will be selling for $499. http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/1096.html |

Yes it might be a phony picture. The thing that makes me think it could be real is when I enlarged the picture it has the SKU number changed in two places. If someone faked this photo they went to the trouble to change the SKU number in two places for anyone that decided to increase the picture 500%.

I've been hearing rumors about this for quite some time. How can you tell the 60 from the 80? You can just take an 80 GB hard drive and put it inside the 60 GB model, taking out the 60 GB hard drive. The picture looks convincing enough. Sony has yet to confirm all this.

Increasing the HDD to 80GB is really not a big deal. It's not like the Kutaragi-fueled rumor of a home theater version of the PS3.
Like I've said before, it would cost SCE more money to procure 20GB or 60GB 2.5" HDDs when the laptop market is moving forward with higher and higher capacities. Whatever that is in the market that is cheap and available in bulk would be in the PS3's innards. Kotaku also got it wrong. There is no "Elite" version of the PS3, just one with a bigger HDD. This is not like the X-Box 360 Elite, where even THAT version does not come close to what the PS3 can do in terms of gaming, movie playback, internet browsing, music, photo and Folding. fuad |

It does look pretty iffy. Besides I can't find any PS3 boxes with both the listing in GB as well as Go (GigaOctets), as far as in Region 1, on the top of the box. Also, I could be wrong, but I haven't seen any PS3 box tops with the GB listed in red ink, they are all in white. I know the GB are listed in red on the front of the box in Asia, but are white on the box top, plus the red is a different shade of red, more of a crimson. Anywhoo...

If sony does make an 80GB model by itself then why should we buy it. We can just as easily get an 80 GB hard drive and put that inside the 60 GB model unless the 80 is going to have something that both the 20 and 60 don't have.

My personal feeling is that sony will continue to increase it's HDD size over the years but only so as to allow consumers the benefit of being able to store more stuff over the years without having to add another HDD. |
