Claude Sautet's Classe Tous Risques Heading Back to UK Cinemas

The British Film Institute (BFI)The British Film Institute is bringing back to UK cinemas French director Claude Sautet's crime drama Classe Tous Risques a.k.a The Big Risk (1960), starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, Lino Ventura, Sandra Milo, and Marcel Dalio. The film will open in select cinemas on September 13th.

Lino Ventura and Jean-Paul Belmondo star in this early 1960s French Italian crime drama adapted from the novel by José Giovanni. Abel Davos (Ventura), a gangster wanted for murder, has been hiding out in Italy for the last decade. After getting married and having children he feels ready to return to his native France but making it back home proves difficult. He ends up getting separated from his wife and finds himself on the run from the police with his two sons. After calling in a favour, however, he is assisted by fellow gangster Eric Stark (Belmondo) who tries to help them complete their journey without getting caught.

The BFI are releasing THE SEVEN SAMURAI as a Steelbook edition, which - at the moment - appears to be a Zavvi exclusive. Release Date - 21st October 2013!

This has been available for a while. There's been plenty of discussion about it being a Zavvi exclusive and there being no standard amaray copy

Not at the moment it seems.
They'll defiantly do one though, it's one of their biggest titles.

I have no issue with the BFI making SEVEN SAMURAI a Steelbook-only release. I do, however, have a big issue making it exclusive to Zavvi only. A very poor decision from the BFI. I thought they were supposed to be making classic movies more accessible, not less?

I'm pretty sure HMV got a couple of exclusives from Eureka and Arrow in the past didn't they? Why's this any different? Touch Of Evil was an HMV exclusive for quite a while, until Eureka put a few up for sale on their store. But in terms of initial release, it was HMV-only...it's probably so BFI don't have to spend 4 times as much printing a multi-thousand run of steelbooks for all retailers, only to find out the general public would still rather buy Die Hard than Seven Samurai. I've pre-ordered one from Zavvi for £13.25 (using discount codes and points) and can't wait for it to arrive personally. I reckon they're being cautious with their first steelbook, and fair enough - this might be a decider on whether they release any more in the future...and if it doesn't sell well, then it would be a one-off I'm guessing. Would love to see that Godzilla artwork from the DVD on a steelbook if they ever release a blu-ray upgrade...

ToE was the only MoC title exclusive to HMV. I don't recall any Arrow release being exclusive to HMV, only the Battle Royale and The Beyond steelbooks exclusive to Zavvi.

More over, for ToE, only the steelbook was exclusive. The regular release got a normal widespread release.

And when MoC released Touch of Evil there was a HMV on every high street. It was very accessible. A Zavvi only release of Seven Samurai is deranged.

Dawn of the Dead was, but that was just so they could have it as an exclusive for a couple of week then it became available everywhere.

Because the BFI is a publicly funded, Royal charter organisation whose aims are "to promote greater understanding and appreciation of, and access to, film and moving image culture in the UK". To restrict a title to one online retailer like that seems a little odd.

I don't actually think Seven Samurai is going to be a Zavvi exclusive. I'm expecting a regular, non-steelbook edition to be announced any day now.

Oh, and Touch Of Evil wasn't an HMV exclusive. The steelbook version was, but the regular edition was available everywhere, day one.

Back in June this subject was being discussed over on the Criterion Forum with much speculation over the possible steelbook only release of Seven Samurai and MichaelB posted :

Right, just to clear this up, I contacted the BFI DVD Publishing Department directly, and the situation is exactly as I assumed a few posts above: the steelbook is indeed exclusive to Zavvi, but there will definitely be a more conventional Blu-ray package coming out through all the usual channels at a date that's yet to be set.

The initial steelbook release was HMV only, like I said. And yes you're right about The Beyond, but Battle Royale was Play.com. My point is that other respected companies have done exclusives before, and the BFI are testing the waters.

I can not agree with this unless you are a steelbook fetishist. As previously said, Blu-ray disc in keep case will be available everywhere. Also, I am almost sure that steelbook edition will not contain a booklet.

It could be that zavvi paid for steelbook exclusively which actually made this steelbook happen. Hence without zavvi you would be getting a steelbook edition at all.

I'm probably wrong but I can't remember the BFI releasing a steelbook before this.

You could be correct, crazyman, but hasn't this (currently) also resulted in no release other than the steelbook?

I wouldn't mind so much if it was a matter of the steelbook only being available through Zavvi, and an amaray release being available through other outlets, but for now isn't it the case that the steelbook is the only version of this BFI release so far announced? If Zavvi's exclusivity means no other option, then I think that's carrying rights a bit too far.
