Of course someone could have just screwed up and is blaming it on Oprah.
I saw a news report about Oprah, last year, about when she promotes something, for some reason everyone goes out and buys it. Never understood why every follows what Oprah says.

The news report was about small companies trying to meet demand but then going under because they're expanded to fast. I guess even WB can’t keep up with Oprah fan’s demands.

And that backlog on the hd-dud version at Amazon will clear up quickly once those cancellations are all tallied.

I preordered from Amazon on March 6th and the expected shipping is April 29th. A five day difference from the release date won't kill me especially when I've had the patience to avoid watching it on Discovery this whole time.

Not enough copies to satisfy the demand. We all know how this goes... (PS3 launch...) etc.
Well this is my first post but I am a happy owner of the PS3 and tried today april 24 to get ahold of Planet Earth on blue ray and was pleased to get my hands on what was told to me to be the last of 2 copies that were available at Walmart West here in Edmonton.

I checked Futureshop/Bestbuy ABSOUND/HMV/LONDON DRUGS and a few mom and pop shops and they were baffled for why the delay.

HMV staff priced the DVD copys as if they were blue ray. Good thing I caught that since they had to call all their pre-order clients that ordered at this location..

Anyway I hope to post more constructive experience soon.

Damn you Amazon!!!

Preordered my PE over a month ago and just checked the shipping status and says estimated delivery is between May 2nd and 4th!!

What's the point of placing a preorder.. I'll be able to pick one up and any local Best Buy by then!!!

I guess they underestimated the demand for the BD format once again..

Anyone else with this problem?

I read that the high definition disc versions will be missing 3-4 hours of extras that the DVD version will have. Is this true??? What's the point of blu-ray having all that disc space when they don't even use it? That's so not cool.

amazon.com is so lame....preordered mine, got expedited shipping so I could watch it yesterday.....and then they sent me a box with an invoice and that's it. I ended up getting a refund, though, but now have to wait almost a month before I'll get a copy.

You can ask that question to Warner and their HD DVD mastering.

More FUD i have to keeel.

The HIGH DEFINITION disc versions (BOTH HD DVD and Blu-ray disc) include the whole 11 Planet Earth programs complete.

The HD DVD and Blu-ray disc editions both consist of 4 discs. The BD has 4 x 25 GB = 100GB (which could have easily fit in two BD50s btw) while the HD DVD version has the same content in 4 x 30GB? HD DVDs with the 100GB of data.. So what's the point of having what space? HAD Warner used four 50GB discs they could have had (and used) the space, for example, for a lossless PCM track and supplements, but they did their normal HD DVD ports and that's all they fit on 4 discs.

What they don't include, available on the PAL R2 DVD version at least which has an extra disc (I don't have/haven't seen the NTSC R1 DVD version) are "the Planet Earth Diaries" which are short, about 10 minute, segments that are making of's of the episodes, and one more supplement: Planet Earth – The Future. The PAL box set is five DVD-9s. These are all of course PAL Standard Definition discs.

When I checked the filmed program from the High Def disc against the same episde on the DVD the content was exactly the same.

BD again held back due to an inferior product and WB taking the easy way out...

Yes.. BD is inferior, yet both neglected to mention that the hd dvd version would be wasting 20gb more...

I just think the blu-ray version should, at the very least, have everything the DVD does. I'm still going to buy this though. I'm addicted to buying blu-ray. I don't have as many as some people here, but I 50+.

kiddtigger I think it's an amazing title, as you can see from my post here essential in so many ways. The short making of's are interesting in how they achieved the shooting, but what's important is seeing the content in amazing high definition quality. It's so beautiful in so many levels. I don't know if the NTSC DVD also has 5 discs (i assume so) so maybe you could rent it to watch the 5th disc. I'm watching the Blu-ray right now and I keep being hypnotized with the images. Maybe I'll do a full review of it later and comparing it to the PAL DVD in detail. Sometimes when you're looking at it on high def it's scary looking at the animals so close and so detailed (it's almost like I can touch you!) Also great are the aerial shots, one really feels the tension of the chases like if one was almost there.

There is an overhead shot at the beginning of the first program of birds flying where the camera keeps pulling back making the myriad birds become tinier and tinier till they look like million of tiny dots (well I might be exaggerating) in the distance and they still look pinpoint sharp! That shot alone makes you realize what things high def and 1080 can convey.

Jason, what do you mean inferior? I have 3 times as much of those inferior BDs and I plan on getting more!
