No, it was the sister he never knew was his, except briefly during that awkward kiss in their teenage years...

Yeah, that must be it. I mean it's not like his whole ego-maniacal "I'm right, everybody else is wrong, and they're just going to have to take what I give them and suck it up" attitude might have had something to do with it as well.

Sigh. Thank you for missing my point.

To be fair, I don't think Lucas is that egomaniacal as many people make him out to be. I mean, he is donating all the money he got from Disney for a better cause. But no. People are gonna rag on him for years on end for basically giving them what amounts to two average movies and a decent enough one (had they not been labeled Star Wars movies, of course). And it doesn't stop there. Remember that out of context quote by the late Mel Smith a few years back regarding Lucas and having dead celebrities revived through digital CG? People went crazy over that, without even bothering to check the source and the context of that quote. To me, it just proves that some people just can't let go of the past. The fanbase is probably the main reason that I'm not generally excited for Episode VII. Oh, I might still go to it. Probably may even surprise me a bit (honestly, they probably should've gotten Joe Johnson for this one. Abrams just isn't a half-mad visonary like Lucas was). It's just that in the end, aren't we just a little too harsh on the man that gave us something that we may never experience again?

I wouldnt ssay he created anyones childhood - their parents actually did that

I know what ya mean though. Im a HUGE SW fan and generally defend it pretty hard. But, I am NOT blind to its shortcomings - in the originals or the prequels. Saying George "ruined my childhood" is just dumb, as you pointed out. Your childhood is long over. It cant be edited in any way.

Alls he really did was not meet a lot of peoples expectations. Its tough to do that with the bar set so high. With something so big and popular there will always be a large contigency that will never be happy unless things come out exactly like they wanted them too.

I feel fans of movies, sports teams, whatever ARE entitled in some ways. They are the ones paying the bills and making these people sick-rich. For that, we DO demand you pander to us and be successful. We DO demand you meet or exceed our expectations. So we disagree there.

I agree for the most part-- I would say that a writer and an artist is not necessarily obliged to follow what fans want per se. But I do agree that fans are definitely entitled to vent and criticize when they think someone dropped the ball. If these people weren't fans, they wouldn't feel so strongly about it either way. Take the final season of Dexter as the most recent example. It was horrible-- not because of specific creative decisions the creators made, but because they did such a horrible job with the whole season (bad writing, pointless new characters, plotlines that went nowhere, etc.).

Now, one thing I never agree with is the defense that Lucas' prequels merely didn't meet fans very concise expectations. That's a cop out defense, and ignores the very real problems the prequel films had with bad writing/plotting, wooden acting, dull characters, and lazy directing.

anyone who says Lucas ruined their childhood needs to get a life. if this is all that defines your childhood, what kind of sheltered life did you lead? in the end, they are movies. I hate the direction that they are taking Star Trek right now but do I stop watching all Trek because of it? pop in that old vhs and watch the original versions as you remember them because even when you were a kid, you never saw them in 1080. did the prequels suck? yeah but then again, you don't have to watch them. time to take some ownership here people. no one is forcing you to watch these movies but Lucas did own them - he actually paid for and owned those films so he can do pretty much what ever he wants to them. do you ask your neighborhood what color they like when you want to paint your house? at least you have the original versions to watch(which by the way there are multiple "original versions" of the movies depending on where you saw it so even that arguement is a bit shaky).

People who say that Jar Jar ruined the series, or couldn't fathom how Lucas would do anything to ruin the series, have obviously NOT seen the Star Wars Holiday Special.

If you've seen that show, then Jar Jar Binks, Midoclorians, Luke & Leia's semi-incestuous relationship, Ewoks, NOOOOoooooo, Anakin building C3P0, and anything else in the Star Wars that strikes everyone as bizarre in Star Wars all of a sudden makes perfect sense in retrospect.

Nah, you're probably right. The prequels disappoint at many levels. I can agree with that, as much as it pains me to do so. I WANT to love them but its hard to. But, thats what makes us fans...we keep coming back even though we arent thrilled about the product. Like fans that keep paying to watch crappy sports teams year in, year out.

There is just enough good about the prequels to allow me to stil watch and enjoy them when I watch Star Wars. But, its aggravating thinking about the problems and what could have been.

I hate defending the prequels because I loathe them but there were moments of sheer acting greatness in the film. Ian McDiarmid really chewed the scenery in every single scene he was in.

The problem with that theory is that Lucas had very little input into the Holiday Special. He basically just left them to it. Of course, that in itself was a mistake, a mistake he would ultimately repeat on HOWARD THE DUCK. He was too hands-off in those instances.
