This is one of those movies that used to look very cool at a video store with a cool VHS cover. But once rented, it's a borefest.

It's very dated, but if you're a fan of Clive Cussler novels and his hero, Dirk Pitt, you'll really enjoy this.
This is kind of like what you would find on SyFy channel, except there was no SyFy channel back in 1980...at least I don't think there was.
Good fun movie IMO.

I loved this movie when I was a kid, and when I watched it again many years later (having read a few of Cussler's books since then, but not RTT) I was amazed to discover that it's been a Dirk Pitt Adventure all this time.

A guilty pleasure movie for sure. I was a big into Titanic history as a kid, so it was enjoyable then. Never thought this would show up on Blu-ray. Day one buy for me. I haven't seen this movie in a very long time.

I remember reading the novel by Clive Cussler and being extremely disappointed at how different the movie was.

Anybody else remember this quote from when the film came out? Referring to the budget, I think the film's producer remarked, "It would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic!"

Sci-Fi channel starting broadcasting back in 1992. Was not a fan of the butchering they did to the Sliders TV show, but did enjoy when they picked up Stargate SG-1 and spun that off into Atlantis. The only thing I watch on that channel now is Defiance, which in my personal opinion is a great original series.

That's pretty funny!
I was reading on IMDB talking about the the scale model they used in the film, that cost several hundred thousand to make...but since it was so big they couldn't use the tank on the studio lot, to film, as it was now too small. They had to construct a larger tank and about $6million...all total the cost of constructing the actual Titanic was less.

I tuned it for that show this past season and was happy I did!

Most of their programming now consists of those ultra low budget crappy horror/sci-fi movies, played over and over again. Since they took Stargate Atlantis off the air for Stargate Universe, a show I never liked and glad flopped quickly, there had been a lack of quality original series from that channel. Glad to see they have a winner on their hands again. I just wish they could get more original shows like that to fill their weekly programming, I would never want to watch another channel... not counting my weekly fix of Family Guy and Robot Chicken.

But it should be interesting to watch this movie this thread is about again, I saw it on television within a year or two after it came out, and vaguely remember the premise of the movie. From what I remember it was ok to decent at best, nothing special, but it's fun once in a while to revisit movies from my childhood, if nothing more then to say "why in the hell did I watch this in the first place."

I agree, SyFy has had some nice hits over the years, but not nearly enough to offset the bad movies that have aired(Sharknado...really?) With so much content available, and I snag a lot of it on my 3 dvr's, if it doesn't hold my attention: Delete!
Maybe we'll see Raise the Titanic before year's end? That would be a nice little preview for the upcoming BD.
I'm really looking forward to SF annoucing the extras included. They do such a great job with providing extras, on their releases.

As a lifelong Titanic buff, even I can openly admit how AWFUL this film is from start to finish. We don't need this one on bluray, or ever to see the light of day again. What we really need is the 3 hour edition of 1979's "SOS Titanic" on bluray. That's a film worth watching.

** Incidentally, the entire "Raise the Titanic" film can be seen on YouTube right now. I watched it the other day, which reconfirmed to me how bad it really is.

Well good for you. I'm happy to see it again just to hear John barry's magnificent score.

I'd love to see this, and The Final Countdown get remakes. I don't say that often, but I think these films have some great film elements that would greatly benefit from today's technology.
I mean if hollywood is going to recycle everything anyway.
