I agree 100%! There has been way too many zombie movies made, that they're beginning to be repetitious.

The rights for Fright Night Part II may be split between Lionsgate and Sony (TriStar had the foreign rights) but who knows at this point.

The people that originally worked out the licensing might not be with Lionsgate at this point. The disc has been OOP for roughly 10 years.

On KillerPOV, Cliff said they've tracked down almost everyone involved, companies, producers, etc. And they all claim not to own it.

Out of those, I say get Day of the Dead and Terror Vision/The Video Dead.

Scream Factory did an amazing job with the double feature release of Terror Vision/The Video Dead. I don't think much of Video Dead, but Terror Vision is awesome and it looks amazing on Blu ray. Day of the Dead is a classic (my favourite zombie movie) and the array of special features are fantastic, enough said.

Can I ask how much you paid? I purchased my copy last May for 9.28 Shipped and it was Brand New on ebay. Even with that purchase, I'm more then happy to add the Blu ray to my Collection and Create Combo packs using the existing DVD trilogy. Also, at this point only the first film as been announced, so if you purchased the DVD trilogy, there is still value in the 2nd and 3rd film as part of that set.

Assuming it's true if no one claims to own Fright Night II then no one would be likely to sue if it was released without license. It seems like if nothing else they've ruled out "everyone involved, companies, producers, etc" from obstructing a release and it suggests Fright Night II is de facto public domain. Maybe it would be irresponsible for Scream Factory to release under this condition but if no one wants to claim ownership of material and there is no record of such... at what point does a license become considered abandoned?

[I suspect Fright Night II will be one of Scream Factory's 2014 releases based on their pattern of building elaborate denials around impending titles like Halloween II, SPM, or Night of the Demons ]

I think that some company, some upstart, possibly fake, should say that they will put out Fright Night Part 2. That'll bring the real owner to justice.

If nothing arises, it is defacto public domain.

For crying out loud, how can someone not know if they own a film? Or how can no one know who owns it? I can go to google and get satellite shots of Cuba on my laptop any time I want but someone who runs a video label can't figure out who owns 1 lousy 25-year-old B-movie? The producer doesn't know who owns the film he produced? Give me a break!

Found this info elsewhere... it's old and likely already known, but worth repeating. Has anyone followed up with the Sony angle? Seems if this is the case it may be worth talking with the folks at Twilight Time to see if they've seen the film listed amongst Sony's assets when they are choosing films to release.

Quote:
Fright Night Part 2 was made independently by a small now defunct studio called "The Vista Organization" , The film was distributed theatrically by Tri-Star Pictures and on home video by "IVE" (Independent Video Entertainment) which in 1990 became "Live Home Video", which later became "Live Entertainment", which later became "Artisan Entertainment" and in 2001 was bought by Lions Gate Films along with Trimark Pictures and Sterling/Studio Home Entertainment. Paramount had nothing to do with Fright Night Part 2.

Who has the original prints and masters? Who knows at this moment, maybe they are at vault at Sony, since they were the ones who distributed the film theatrically back in 1988 through Tri-Star, Tommy Lee Wallace might have some prints and deleted footage tucked away or producer Herb Jaffe's family may have the prints, Fright Night Part 2 was the producer's last film, he passed away back in 1991. Coincidentally most of the films produced by The Vista Organization have yet to receive the DVD treatment ( 1987's Three for the Road, Dudes, Nightflyers and 1988's Remote Control). Only FN Part 2 and 1987's Maid to Order have received the DVD treatment, and it were full screen VHS transfers.

The original Fright Night was produced by Herb Jaffe as well under his production company Vistar.

This brings about an interesting idea. Where did the director of Remote Control get his rights from? The answer may lie there.

Well, that film was made by a company, they closed shop, sold to another, then that one folded and was sold off to multiple companies, then that one sat on it, then another company bought some of those films, and then they sold off to 2 different companies, then lionsgate released it. Now we don't know who has it.

---
And the Killer Pov episode was from what I gather an "anything goes" kinda q&a, and they said they answer any questions truthfully. I believe they did.

*** they aren't lieing or intentionally misleading us, its just that things change.
What once may have been ture, simply isn't anymore. That's how this type of business works.

If this was at all realistic, how would they get a print? Rights holders generally mean print holders as well.

I meant as a form of trickery. Say you have it when you may not.

It may be I have a disadvantage not knowing how this type of business workers first hand but there is a dubious pattern. It's well known Scream Factory representatives acknowledged intentional deception in denying Halloween III not wanting to ruin the surprise.

Call me cynical but there was finalized commissioned cover art for Night of the Demons within weeks (9/12/13) of denial (7/9/13).

Regarding Slumber Party Massacre, I'm not sure of the background but this was the initial claims:

Slumber won't sell enough units to pay for three HD transfers. Sorry.
...We'll have to see what, if anything, develops with Fright Night II.

Chilling Visions: 5 Senses of Fear has a good review over at DVD Talk.
