JJ will do it right. All you need to do is watch the mystery box speech he gave at the TED conference, which he gave well before the idea of directing SW ever came up, and its pretty clear he just gets it.

He has the knowledge of what makes a story interesting and the value of great dialogue that actually means something and character interaction and chemistry, that Lucas never had. He is able to make a better SW movie than any of the previous 6 because of what he talks about in the mystery box speech.

Does anyone think Lucas is capable of giving a speech like that? I sure as hell dont. Hes going to know that the swipes are important and would never get rid of things like that. Its still going to be star wars, the big difference is its not going to have crap dialogue and acting, and will actually have a story that most people will probably love, not just space nerds, for the very same reason my girl LOVES the new Star Trek movies, but is not even remotely close to being any sort of sci fi or space fan. The movies had great dialogue, acting, the stories were interesting, and thats all thats needed, and is everything the prequels lacked.

Can't wait for this, Disney and Lucasfilm are a match made in heaven.

Anyone glad they hired a BETTER writer than Lucas? Michael Arndt is quite a brilliant writer no doubt and the film is directed by JJ who is a better director than Lucas. I mean Lucas was good in his time but during the 90s and now he became like thrown into the dark side as he knew SW needed repairing.

I think it might come out November 2015 as summer has HUGE competetion with Disney's other blockbuster being Avengers 2 in May then Jurassic World in June and Independence Day 2 in July but November would be great. Afterall the original date for SW ANH was Christmas 1976 but Lucas had to move to summer 1977 as there was competetion in Xmas 1976.

Ain't no way in hell this movie makes it out in 2015. They'll need at least a year for post production alone and they haven't even finalized a script, a cast, a date for when they start filming, or anything! I'm thinking Summer 2016 is more realistic.

Ya know - I still think its valid to have a deal where the Emperor had himself cloned. I mean, its been established that cloning was very much part of the universe and it works for the storyline. It almost make sense too - when the order was placed that a "special" request was also filled which would have been the Emperor clone.

Even cooler - the emperor clone could actually end up being a good guy because the dark side "gene" didnt get cloned properly or cant be cloned and the emperor didnt know that. Then, he joins Han & Leias son/daughter ffigh the baddies.

I though that'd be cool.

You know, we've already seen what happens when the Sith attempt to gain control. That is partly what the prequels explored, so I hope they don't try to rehash something like this. In a a Galaxy this big, surely there are numerous threats that can be dealt with, not the least of which are elements of the old empire attempting to hold on to power.

As far as action set pieces go, I'm much more interested in mind blowing space battles (there were none in the prequels save for a few moments at the start of Sith) than a bunch of dweebs with lightsabers.

I'm sure star wars 7 will be passable and serviceable like abrams star trek films were. Plenty of cgi candy to keep crowds happy but will have characters without a lot of warmth or depth. Oh well. Well all be seeing it anyhow.

Yeah, that's cool. Ian McDiarmid is a fan favourite, and seeing him in the villain role is getting a little tired. And maybe no one realises he's good for half the film or so, until he like, saves Luke's arse or something...

I'm pretty Disney has already set a date for this in 2015. They're thinking summer 2015.

I know that's the date they've set but logistically I don't see how they're going to make that date. Dates get moved all the time. At this point I don't see how they even start filming until sometime in 2014. You've got set construction & FX construction, costume design, etc. Then you've got post-production which normally takes about a year and then re-shoots. Then you've got to set aside time for promo. Like I said, I just can't see how this film makes it out in 2015 at the pace they are going with it. They don't even have a finalized script or cast yet!

Even IF it stays in summer 2015, I guarantee you it won't be in its usual late May slot. Avengers 2 will still be raking in cash and they arent going to compete with themselves. They will leave more breathing room so at least June or July, but I think they hold it for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Correction: they don't have a finalized cast or script that we know of.

and preproduction, costumes design, set design, fx planning, probably even storyboarding and animatics, is well underway and has been for some time now.

J.J. Abrams And Lawrence Kasdan Take Over STAR WARS EPISODE VII Writing Duties From Michael Arndt

As Episode VII continues pre-production, Lawrence Kasdan and director J.J. Abrams have assumed screenwriting duties for the film. Kasdan, who has been serving as a consultant on the film, is a veteran of several classic Lucasfilm productions, writing the screenplay for Raiders of the Lost Ark and serving as co-screenwriter for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Acclaimed director and screenwriter Abrams' credits include Super 8, Mission: Impossible III, Fringe, and Lost.

"I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script," states Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. "There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a Star Wars story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.J. of course is an incredible storyteller in his own right. Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point and we have an amazing filmmaking and design team in place already prepping for production."

Location scouting, production design, casting, and costume design are already underway on Episode VII. A team of gifted artists are working to bring the latest installment of the Star Wars saga, including director of photography Dan Mindel (Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness), production designers Rick Carter (Lincoln, Avatar, Forrest Gump) and Darren Gilford (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy), costume designer Michael Kaplan (Star Trek Into Darkness, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Fight Club),special effects supervisor Chris Corbould (Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), sound designer Ben Burtt (Lincoln, Wall-E, Star Wars: Episodes I-VI), re-recording mixer Gary Rydstrom (Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, Mission: Impossible -Ghost Protocol), supervising sound editor Matthew Wood (Star Trek Into Darkness, The Master, There Will Be Blood) of Skywalker Sound, and visual effects supervisor Roger Guyett (Star Trek Into Darkness, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith) of Industrial Light & Magic. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Jack Ryan, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers. John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII.

Shooting is scheduled to begin Spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios for an expected 2015 release.

Bummer. Arndt was one of the most exciting things about this project for me. I'm glad Kasdan's been 'promoted' (and I like Abrams plenty) but I was really looking forward to seeing what Arndt would bring to the table in a Star Wars film.

I wonder if he'll still get a 'Story By' credit, considering the work he's done? I doubt they've thrown out everything he's done. The press release even gives him his dues on getting them where they are.

I'm actually very ok with this news. I'm glad to see Kasdan taking over writing duties. The guy is responsible for not only 'Empire', but 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and 'Silverado' as well. This makes me think they're really going for a feel of the OT. That's very important to me, and it's good to see them taking it seriously, and spending the extra time on it making sure that the story and script is right, instead of rushing into production to meet a date. Great news all around.

I love that Kasdan is on board! I was never sold on Arndt. I've liked some of his stuff, but nothing blew me away and certainly didnt strike me as right for Star Wars.
