I completely agree. The Australian releases are horrible. The ratings diminish the artwork so much and secondly, we rarely get slip covers. The big cases also take up much more room than the thin US ones.

For everyone saying they buy from overseas Do you use a multi-region player? If so, which one?

Cheers.

I use these:

Oppo BDP-105

Oppo BDP-93

Toshiba BDX3200KY

There are only a select few models available to the Australian and New Zealand markets that are region free out of the box or that can be modified. Some of the guy's use Veon or Soniq players for this, and from memory there are also models from Pioneer, Kogan and Laser that play titles from all regions. Though I think the majority of the local guys do use the Oppo BDP-93 or 103.

Thank you very much!

Oppo players are great but are probably a bit out of my price range. Found some cheaper deals on the Laser ones you mentioned that are more suitable. Looking forward to getting some amazon imports!

How is the Australian ratings logo better than the UK?

The UK one is smaller, and does not detract from the artwork as much, granted having two on there is stupid, but its a damn sight better than what we're treated to here in Australia.

My only gripe with the UK releases is how markedly different they are to their US counterparts. Different colour schemes, critics comments splashed all over the cover, and if 3D, the banner across the top taking up 1/5 of the space for the art.

I don't understand why the art is not uniform.

^ My only gripe is that the contrast seems to be heavily used. As for their rating logo, prefer it over ours!

The thing about this Blu-ray-Nut, is that you commonly find these sorts of complaints in every section. I've seen comments in the UK section where UK members have stated that out of all countries that put ratings logos on the front covers, that they still believe theirs are the ugliest. In the U.S section members complain that their releases often receive the worst photoshopped covers, or that they don't get as many limited editions such as Steelbooks, compared to the rest of the world. It's strange how the opinions from each nation differs, and how often people think what other nations have is better. The truth is, often no one is satisfied with the releases that their country receives. Packaging seems to just make so many people on here go crazy, I've never seen such a level of OCD from people. I've come across quite a number of comments where members have stated that they spend countless hours staring at their collections, where they even grab titles from their shelves and just sit down and look at them admiring artwork. I tell you what, if my fiancée saw me acting like this she would think I was a bit of a pathetic loser. I find myself almost always satisfied by not worrying about packaging, and I'm sure I'm a lot happier for it too. To be honest I would guarantee that most average people would prefer the look of my collection, where I've chosen to use the shelves as the main focal point to display it instead of the titles themselves and their packaging

Pretty sure the multi region soniq is discontinued now. I brought 2 on sale for 70 each to replace my current one if it craps out. Good little machine though had no problems in over 3 years although it doesnt play the audio properly on some fox releases.

Damn, she sounds like a harsh *****.

Also sounds pretty hypocritical based on your home theater gallery.. if she is quite willing to let you have a setup like that, which clearly shows you enjoy movies, then looking at blu-ray covers is the least of her problem.

I don't think we have 'average' collectors here either. I don't see 'average' blu-ray collectors signing up to a forum and spending time here.

Never seen that level of OCD? mate, when you run out chocolate bars in your 'candy bar', do you leave the box empty or do you re-fill it and make sure it's sitting in the right spot?

Default Multi Region Player.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, i appreciate it.

I grabbed the l'aser blu-bd1080' from The Good Guys for $71 as it was advertised as mult-region on the box and had good reviews online.

Just tried playing Child's play (region A locked) in my Sony bdp-s370 though and it worked fine! May have had a region free all along hahaha.

I think the meaning of my comment has been misinterpreted. Looking at a cover for a minute or so is one thing, but spending hours doing it on a regular basis is something different entirely. My Oppo's and some of my other home theatre equipment are attractive to look at too, however I'm not going to waste hours just staring at it all admiring it's beauty. At least investing in home theatre equipment serves a purpose, as it can improve the experience you get out of the Blu-ray Disc, unlike packaging where it offers no benefit to movie watching. Luckily my fiancée is interested in this hobby almost as much as I am (though we are interesting in the content itself, nothing more), however even if she wasn't it wouldn't be a matter of her being willing, I earn money and have the prerogative to spend it without needing her permission. The way she thinks is no different to the majority of women, many women think guy's that go into EB games are geeks, so imagine what they would think if they caught their man consistently staring at their movie collection more than at them. Behaviour like this would indicate that they have some kind psychological issue.

The point I was making by mentioning average people, was that I, like a lot of other mature people, prefer to have the main rooms of my place looking neat and tidy and looking like their respective rooms, not like an adolescents bedroom with plastic toys, posters and film memorabilia all over the place. This kind of thing can be important when you try to sell your home or have guests over etc, particularly since most average people think large collections look cluttered and untidy as it is. Packaging can make your collection stand out in a negative way, where it gets unwanted attention, rather than it blending in with the rest of your decor. As for my candy bar, it's been empty for sometime now, I found myself eating too much chocolate . Besides I think it's obvious that my place would be tidy when taking photographs for something such as my gallary, it doesn't quite look that clean all the time.

Also if I was going to collect models and figurines they would be of high quality and very detailed like those you see in some galleries such as these:

https://images.static-bluray.com/htg...31703_full.jpg
https://www.blu-ray.com/community/ga...ARKILLER--1138

not cheaply made overpriced predator heads that come with limited edition blu-ray releases .

I bought a Soniq BD100 from JB for $55 on sale, never looked back.

Sadly. It can only be on one region at a time for BD, so I just changed it to A with the remote, and I play B discs on my PS3. Win Win.

Only gripe is the buttons on the machine aren't buttons, they're weird touch pads, and the remote isn't fantastic. But for $55 it does the job.

Anyone find it funny how the Soniq remote is pretty much identical to the Toshiba one?

I have the model of the Soniq player that is supposedly mulit-region, depending on the serial code of the machine itself on the box. But I got one which didn't have that function whilst my cousin did...

Purchased before we knew about it of course.

Cevs, I completely understand what you said in the above post, and the one in reply to Crumb.

Call me OCD, but I thought the cover art was somewhat part of the whole experience of the film, you and others may disagree, but for half the films that get released the cover art they're given isn't always some slapdash job, and I believe a fair amount of time and effort has gone into it.

As for those complaints from all the corners of the world about their respective regions cover art, I guess it's the old grass is greener mentality rearing it's ugly head there, of course with international shipping we can make our own choices rather than being saddled with what's given.

That's similiar to what the Kmart and Target catalogues do with DVD snd games. You can clearly see the classification yet they put a box with the rating over that. I really hate it.
