I know a guy who's willing to part with a sealed copy of the Cassavetes box for 60$. Would it be a safe blind buy?

In 2009, they actually did say on facebook why they released the 160 minute version:
"according to our research, the 183-minute version of Kwaidan is not the director's final cut, but if/when this is reissued we will be sure to include the additional material as a supplement."

Not quite Criterion-related, but I hijacked the thread the other evening with my mention of the film, and figured that I may as well close the lid on it.

On the Criterion front, the 1969 movie, Medium Cool, would make a rather fascinating double feature with The Conversation, as both films employ the realistic cinema talents of Haskell Wexler.
Another outstanding review! I am really glad that you enjoyed it. Here's to many more pleasurable re-watches!

Is Carol Reed's Night Train to Munich available as Criterion Blu-ray? I know there is a Criterion DVD.

This usually piques people's attention because it's so low and they get bidding - people are more reserved if a starting price is high and you get the weird phenomenon of people getting into bidding wars on the items that started low even if the price surpasses something that started higher but is now cheaper. The risk is, of course, that you might end up only selling for 99 cents, so you can always put a reserve price if that's a concern. How much you will end up with depends on the title of course. Something like Chasing Amy isn't going to get you much, but if you have something like the DVD of Le Cercle Rouge, you'll should get some good money for it (especially now that the blu is OOP and high-priced, so people will look to compensate by buying the DVD instead).

If the place you are talking about is looking at what Amazon Marketplace sellers are asking for it, that's a good thing because people who list there tend to list high, often unaware of what something is actually worth.

If you decide to offer international shipping, simply check how much it will actually cost to ship there. Remember, it's the purchaser who is expected to pay those costs, not you. Most international purchasers (including myself in Canada) expect to pay a little more and will generally know what it costs for you to send because they buy from the U.S. a lot. As long as you are honest about charging the exact amount of what it's costing to ship and not overcharging so you can skim a little more for profit, then you should still be able to attract international customers.
Thanks for the information... I'm usually the one buying from Ebay, not selling. So selling is kind of all new to me still (believe it or not). I've been meaning to sell things on Ebay but I have never done so yet. I would have to start getting used to going to the UPS/USPS stores (not going to use FedEx) and buying shipping containers/padded envelopes and getting into the hang of things. I think its a great idea starting bidding at 99 cents and seeing how it turns out. I definitely think its a better idea having auctions for my DVDs than going to a music exchange store and obtaining a quote (with very little to bargain or negotiate).

This is all food for thought, so again, I appreciate your insight on all this.

It looks pretty good in high definition I think. It's shot on film of course, so it has its limitations. The grain structure is organic and good though. The thing about his brother was really an eye opener though.
[Show spoiler]I never expected him to kill himself literally a year after this film was finished shooting. So sad it was seeing him live with his mother his entire life after he graduated high school. I mean, is that a wasted life or what? I don't know... just terrible.. and what the hell was the deal with his brother Maxon who sits on a platform of nails and slowly swallows a long piece of cord soaked in water that apparently goes through his intestines? Looked like a damn tapeworm or something! Somebody explain that!

Thank you! The Conversation really knocked me on my tail, and it's the type of film that I'll enjoy even more during subsequent viewings.

This movie got me to thinking that it's about time for Criterion to release Antonioni's Blow-Up.

I just got home, and I'm about to chill out to The Caine Mutiny.

I finished Eyes Without A Face. It was pretty good. The effects, especially for 1959, were amazing on the surgery! The mask? While very life like, it had a really creepy vibe to it and the ending was kind of unexpected.
[Show spoiler]I really thought they were building towards him getting caught instead of giving up so easily even after their sting operation fell apart. I really felt for Christiane, how miserable she was that she begged Louise to help her do it, how mentally taxing that situation would be in real life, to have to endure surgery after surgery only to see each one fail.

I have to ask though, did anyone else find a lot of the music... out of place? There were 3-4 parts where the music seemed like it belonged in the movie Clue instead of a foreign horror film! Even though it was out of place, it somehow added to the movies charm.

The music is a little jarring at first; seemed like it would be more at home in Circus of Horrors but, like you said, it soon becomes part of the film.

I watched Revanche last night for the 2nd time in my life. I understood the story better and appreciated the film more. It's amazing what a 2nd viewing can do in one's life!

I also have to say that the BD of this film is superb. The quality is top notch.

Default Jan. 2014 Criterion releases

I've sent an e-mail to Amazon asking why the Criterion Collection's Jan. 2014 announced releases for blu-ray are not yet available for pre-order. Somebody at Amazon has dropped the ball.

Apart from "The Life Aquatic" there's another Blu-ray Criterion release I'm waiting for.

Ratcatcher.

Fantastic movie.

I get it enough to be able to wait and not waste someone's time at Amazon on something that won't change the end result at all.

They haven't "dropped the ball" at all. What does it matter if the pre-order is up tomorrow or in two Months time? They're not going to lose any sales.
The prices will still be the same, the release date will still be the same.

you're just whining for sake of whining.
I bet you also send them angry e-mails when they miss the first date of an estimated delivery date in hope of getting something for your whining.
