https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=1239 was actually floated to retailers by at least one studio head several months ago even before the format war ended. Their response ? They thought the impact of the advertising studios have around the dvd would be lost. I guarantee you……. now, that this differential timeline will occur with Be Kind Rewind----several studio chieftains (i.e. Presidential level) will be keeping a close eye on the outcome(s) of this event. Blue Crush is one of my favourite soundtracks that I like to annoy my colleagues in the Control Room with during downtime - unfortunately Youth of a Nation is not on the CD. Not a great film but the cinematography is something that I would like to see on Blu. The Sand Pebbles is a must buy for me to sit in my collection with Bullit and The Getaway. Now if I could get a Blu version of The Great Escape. (Yes, I'm a Steve McQueen fan.) ![]() ted Last edited by tvted; 04-24-2008 at 01:54 AM. |

For that matter, same thing goes with Liverpool - Chelsea from yesterday for all you Blu folk from the U.K. I won't be able to watch either on my DVR until this weekend - earliest. Thanks for the link. ![]() |

"The Great Escape" cries out to be on Blu-Ray. I love that movie. While we are at it, I'll ask again for "The Quiet Man" and add "Mr. Roberts," "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" and "To Catch A Thief." These are classics that never get old. (Sorry to take up Penton's thread with a seeming request for titles but I was reacting to the call for "The Great Escape.")

BD releases (quick survey, not 100% accurate): 1980s: 56 1970s: 24 1960s: 15 1950s: 8 1940s and before: 0 Now, granted a 1984 film would necessarily be considered old. But it is from a master film maker. How many Billy Wilder, Hitchcock, and Cecil Bs requiring far more restoration effort can we hope to see if the word is that the general BD demographic can't stomache them? I sure hope it is a lack of education, rather than a lack of capacity for enjoying these films. Last I checked, the Rolling Stones still sold out their concerts. My goodness, going and watching 60+ year olds rock and roll. How can the youth stop from vomitting? ![]() |

To quote Roger Ebert, "...one of the greatest screen adaptations I have ever seen. Box office wise, it was ranks 34th for the year. but 14 other movies were within $3 million of it in either direction. |

If it does the film elements were apparantly left in such bad-shape after the '95 "restoration" then you could be looking at a fully digital 4K restoration which is mega-bucks... M |

I've noticed alot of members seem to think that the VC-1 codec is a bad thing. I'm sure most of that is associated with it being used mostly by studios who used to support that Red format. However, what they may not realize, is Disney has used VC-1 on at least 3 titles I know of: Flightplan, Deja-Vu, and Gone Baby Gone. To my eyes, all 3 looked great. Are we making too much of a big deal about codecs? I doubt the human eye is going to be able to tell the difference. Who decides on what codec to use and why did Disney use VC-1 when they are primarily a user of AVC?

VC-1 and AVC are virtually identical
It's simply that people have seen mediocre stuff associated with VC-1. There are plenty of reference compressions in VC-1. Typically an authoring house or an individual author decides what codec they want to use. |

According to Richard - R&B Films, and many experts from Doom9 (including Golgot13 who is an expert in the industry) AVS is superior at ALL bit rates. They only experts that seem to say VC-1 is better is Amir and Ben Waggoner of Microsoft. There have even been some rumors the Microsoft is abandoning support of VC-1.
