This concept was proven with results during testing by NHK investigators with imagery projected on displays to unbiased observers (at least 50 participants) and subsequently published in SMPTE journal after that chart with the colored triangles made its appearance.

How do I know such things? Because I stay informed regarding many aspects of vision science even before history-making devices dealing with vision become approved - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...sc#post6848325

By the FDA-
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...da#post8013727
I should mention a little known current endeavor as an addendum update to the “By the FDA” linked portion of the above post for those locals reading who happen to be seriously interested in world class vision evaluation and care but either are unable or resistant to driving to the area of Los Angeles in which USC is located and would be more amenable to something more on the Westside.

In regards to that, UCLA (Jules Stein Eye) is strongly courting Doheny Eye Institute of USC and if an agreement is in fact reached, then USC’s (Doheny Eye) world class staff would most likely be relocated to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (Westwood) and its satellite location in Santa Monica. Even if this happens though, I doubt it would come to fruition before the New Year’s.

In the meantime, if any Blu-ray.com members (or their family members) are in need of a specific referral to someone on USC’s staff with regards to evaluating/protecting/restoring, etc. their vision and in particular with regards to the retina, cornea or even the optic nerve itself, please don’t hesitate to PM me.

With either staff though, you can’t go terribly wrong as both organizations are in the top 10 of the most recent U.S. News & World Report Best Hospital Rankings for ophthalmology, with the Jules Stein Eye Institute I think this year ranked No. 5 and the Doheny Eye Institute ranked No. 9, based on feedback from fellow eye specialists on challenging cases and procedures. At the end of the day, it comes down to finding someone who you are comfortable with and someone who is particularly adept in cutting-edge technologies like the *bionic eye* described in the YouTube clip and the NBC Nightly News piece linked to in the quoted post above.

Each staff has its own particular super-docs, which the eye community places at the most elite level but which I’d say the lay public is generally unaware of even if they were to google-research it.

Furthermore, there is evidence to show that not all humans with “20/20 visual acuity” have the same resolving power with their eyes for details displayed on an electronic monitor http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3293147/

Anyway from visual pathways back to 4K TVs and movies ….

I posted this pic of Maya (my coyote friend, to unaware new readers) several years ago on this forum in Club Penton during Halloween time with the theme of “Going Werewolf’.

[Show spoiler]I actually shot that ^ pic during the middle of the day (sometime a little after noon), not at night. If I recall, Deci picked up on that at the time.

Bringing us to -

The climax of the movie Captain Phillips (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ps#post8246036 ) occurs at night.

[Show spoiler]Most of the climax was actually shot during the day.

Check this out and report back.

"These include Rovi, which will demonstrate 4K compression using the HEVC SDK v1.1 codec, with a split-screen comparison of HEVC/H.265 and the older, AVC/H.264 standard"

http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/4k-sm...1310163385.htm

"Since releasing the solution at NAB in June, Rovi has continued to update the MainConcept HEVC SDK with new features and refinements. As well as working to continue to improve HEVC format quality and bitrate savings, the latest SDK v1.1 update adds real-time 4K decoding and support for HM 11 anchor streams. These enhancements are designed to reduce delivery costs by increasing the ease with which high-quality video content is delivered through existing cable, Internet and wireless channels and dramatically decreasing content conversion times."

I’ve been familiar with Rovi since last winter (see Tears of Steel portion of this -
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...rs#post7186967

As I previously made note of the fact a couple weeks later on some other thread in this forum that they offered to become the premiere sponsor for the open film Tears of Steel project by helping fund it.

This was the ‘official announcement’ -
http://www.rovicorp.com/company/news...1434_17225.htm

Kudos to them.

Don’t count on it. I’m feeling my alleged autistic tendencies will prevent me from comprehending a world outside mine (a tech demo, symposium and conference).

Not to mention evidence that my alleged autism makes me capable of higher visual acuity (as by FrACT - http://cvcl.mit.edu/SUNSeminar/Ashwi...utism-BP08.pdf ), which would preclude unbiased reporting in the first place.

In that regard, you and others on your own. THR and/or Display Central will probably cover the event as that's their job….or baring that, you might get lucky with some unemployed types with a lot of time and opinions on their hands analyzing the symposium and the value of the demo as well as the presentations.

I see 3D effects no problem at all. However, I can't get those 3D magic eye hidden pictures that were all the rage a few years ago. Strange

Default 4K games

I know we all like our 4K movies, but 4K games are coming too.

Here's a 4K trailer for the upcoming PC game Star Citizen-

I can't link it but there's a direct download from this thread-

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthre...0#post87024460

Info from the developers-

Quote:
The video, below, shows off a small scale combat situation between two ships weaving in and out of an asteroid field. It's a make-believe commercial for the fictitious Anvil Aerospace Hornet that is, according to Roberts, "100 per cent in-engine" - and displayed in an eye-watering 4K resolution.

"We're pushing the limits with Star Citizen, and this commercial is our best example yet," Roberts said.

"It's rendered 100 per cent in-engine in real-time at 4K resolution. We scale everything for the super high resolutions that will be the basis of tomorrow's gaming experience; our assets are designed with high polycounts instead of having details baked into their textures. That's a big part of why*Nvidia*and*AMD*have been demoing Star Citizen at 4K!

The next generation of CPUs and GPUs will make this kind of experience possible in gameplay, and we are building Star Citizen to be ready. With the Hornet commercial, we wanted to give our backers an early look."

4K gaming is nothing new, pretty much any modern game engine on the PC can handle 4K.

The video cards can't though.

You need something like 2 nVidia Titans in SLI for 4K at playable frame rates.

Meh, that's a bit excessive, I have three 2560x1600 (Over 12 million pixels vs. 8.8 for 4K) monitors and I don't need that much power.

Now three 4K displays in eyefinity (12288x2160), that's where it gets interesting.

It's not a matter of pixels. Stretching an image over 3 monitors and natively pushing 4K information are 2 entirely different rendering methods, especially for game engines.

29fps on current "high" settings isn't that good.

Steed, I had to drop by today to say Congrats on yesterday and that I was very happy for you, yours and your team .

Also, to give you a heads-up on a motion picture concerning the life story of a football legend who had a recent birthday last week. Planned release is sometime next year -
