don't know - he seemed to have a good career in the works before this, then kind of faded away. I think it did hurt his career.

I don't know so much if the roles were controversial or just the films - the casting of Caviezel wasn't controversial but the film was. I think that is what really impacts their futures - they may have done the roll well but because they were in a controversial film, no studio will touch them. it isn't the role or thier performance that is causing it. just my thought.

On Caviezel: playing Jesus did hurt his career, more or less. After the film came out, his next few films failed to take off and he chose to go in a different direction in his career (he also had a spiritual awakening from doing the film, so there's that too). It wasn't really until Person of Interest that his career got back on track.

Anyway, he's good as the villain in Escape Plan. There's something about him playing villains that works so well.

There's actually only 4 minutes of The Brown Bunny that you really need to see.

I think the roles of Jeff Bridges are the exact opposite of controversial.

Tron Legacy, playing Clu was pretty controversial to Tron fans because of the younger version of himself.

That's more "fanboys complain about everything" than controversy.

Some reviews picked up on it, though if you check RT.

I'm guessing it's the scene that explains the film's title .

It is to laugh.
The topic of this thread is :Controversial films roles, that neither hurt or helped an actor's career. Malcolm McDowell's role as Caligula was controversial, whether a person liked the movie or not.

With Caligula, Helen Mirren is probably a better case. Though her career wasn't damaged, it wasn't until the 1990's where her career really took off.

Maybe he hasn't become a major film star, but his television series Person Of Interest is well into its third season. His career is doing fine.

Mcdowell, Mirren, and Caveizel have all had good film/video careers with plenty of controversial roles that neither helped nor hurt.

He gained weight and acted like a shlumpy loser - it was pretty much talked about at the time, slightly controversial.

Kevin Bacon in The Woodsman

I have no idea what would draw someone to the roll of playing a child molester. In fact I'm not sure why someone would want to make or watch the film like that.

I remember seeing the posters for it, think that looks interesting them reading the synopsis & thinking no, I'll give that a miss.

Either way, it didn't hurt or help his career.
