Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

Konami on Wednesday showcased the latest entry in its Castlevania reboot, the MercuryStream-developed Lords of Shadow 2, to journalists willing to brave the long demo lines.

Lords of Shadow 2 (LoS2) builds up the original game's solid foundations by adding new attacks, bigger set pieces, and more action. The game picks up after the first game's events in which hero Gabriel Belmont transformed into Dracula, the prince of darkness. The 20-minute hands-on demo I played boasted familiar, but more tightly weaved gameplay than its predecessor. A tutorial level within Dracula's castle brought me up to speed on the controls—you can jump, evade, block/parry, and land light and heavy attacks. Combos are timing based, so patience and creativity nets hard-hitting results.

Gabriel swings his blood whip, but he also has flaming Chaos Claws (which break through defenses) and a Void Sword (which drain foes of life when you land a hit and helps recover Gabriel's own life force). Beyond the demo levels, Konami said that you can gain new moves and level-up pre-existing ones as you progress.

Our protagonist is a vampire, so he thirsts for blood. You can give it to him by tapping a "feed" button when you're near a stunned enemy. Doing so causes Dracula to go in for a life-bar restoring snack. The demo also showcased puzzles and light platforming which broke up the combat nicely.

The first LoS was criticized for being too heavily influenced by other blockbuster games like God of War. Those who play LoS2 will probably have those thoughts all over again, especially when a hulking, screen-filling boss steps up to battle. Still, it's a well-made game, despite the familar feel.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will be available on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and for the PC on 2/25/2014.

Can't wait for this, I loved the sheer variety the first one had (gameplay, enemy types, environments, etc. The story was top notch as well. With Gabriel being a vampire now, there seems to be just enough new elements to keep it fresh, without dropping the original stuff that people came to love in the first place.

I absolutely loved the first game and it was one of the few games this gen I pre-ordered......but I'm not excited for this one. Maybe because I've been taking it to my backlog and have been on a media blackout for everything except Metal Gear Solid 5 or maybe because it's been three years since I played the first. Not sure. I'll probably get it eventually but not at launch.

I can't wait for this. They said you can control the camera in this one and that it's not as linear. I loved the first one thought it was underrated.

Lords of Shadow 2 is developer MercurySteam's last Castlevania

Spanish studio MercurySteam will step away from Konami's Castlevania series after it wraps up Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, series producer David Cox told Destructoid at San Diego Comic Con.

"I've always thought that this was a torch being passed down," Cox said. "Nobody on the team ever felt like we owned Castlevania. We always felt it was our responsibility now but it wouldn't be ours forever. Let's do what we're going to do, tell our story, and move on."

Cox continued: "So we've told Japan headquarters that this is the last one for us... there's nothing worse than when somebody's got something to say, and when they've said it, they just keep talking. We've got a beginning and end, and it's a cool ending and a cool story. Once we've done that, it's time to say to somebody else, 'now it's your turn.' Maybe it will be a young producer in the company looking for his first break. I think you've got to bring in fresh blood."

Cox previously expressed interest in heading up a MercurySteam-developed entry in Konami's Contra series. While a new Contra game was teased at E3 in 2011, Konami has issued no details regarding the project.

MercurySteam stated time and time again that this was a 3Ds exclusive. Guess the exclusivity deal with Nintendo is up.

I wonder if it didn't sell good on the 3DS. I think the game had some bad reviews. I played the demo on my daughter's 3DS but never got the game because I don't have my own. I would love to play it so I hope this turns out to be true. I thought the demo was really good, it was better than I expected.

I was anxious for Mirror of Fate, had it preordered for months, but I haven't finished it. Probably nowhere near. The best 2d Castlevania since Order of Ecclesia is Dust: An Elysian Tale.

Castlevania: Mirror of Fate HD Coming this Halloween

Castlevania entry Mirror of Fate takes flight in HD to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network on October 31, and also features in a Lords of Shadow collection released on November 5. The Halloween feast includes the first Lords of Shadow, its "Reverie" and "Resurrection" DLC, as well as Mirror of Fate; there are no details on price as yet.

The collection also grants access to a playable demo of Lords of Shadow 2, but so does a PSN/XBLA purchase of Mirror of Fate if you'd prefer a smaller bite of vampiric adventure. The news comes via the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow official Facebook page and Konami Europe, so we have reached out to the publisher to confirm North American availability and details.

According to Konami, Mirror of Fate HD adds online leader boards, a "Boss Rush Mode," and other "gameplay refinements." Today's news follows last week's retailer listing for the now confirmed Lords of Shadow collection, which led us to the Brazilian classification board where the 3DS game is also rated for Wii U and PC in addition to PS3 and Xbox 360. Of course those ratings could mean very little, but we'd advise Wii Us and PCs to keep their collars up for the time being.

Konami announced two collector's edition bundles for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 for European players today. The Premium Edition comes with a tomb-like case and includes four figurines, a hardcover art book, a steelbook case and a copy of the game, while the steelbook edition includes the metal case and either two alternate Dracula costumes or a "Relic Rune" pack, depending on where the collector's edition is pre-ordered from. Those looking to pre-order the Premium Edition need to act fast, as it is limited to 30,000 copies across GAME stores in the UK.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will be coming to North America on February 25th, 2014 before coming to Europe on February 27th, 2014 and the UK on February 28th, 2014.

Awesome trailer, thanks....I loved the first one and it looks like they're kicking it up big time. Can anyone that's seen or played the demo confirm if the camera is still fixed? That was the one thing I hated in the first game.
