57) Misery

1/2

Never saw this before, but I sure am glad I eventually did. That was one suspenseful movie. There was enough tension you could slice it with a knife.

I didn't think I'd make it but I was able to pull of my goal of 31. I love October for so many reasons. Horror movies is the icing on the cake. Congrats to everyone who took part - whether you hit your goal or not.

Final list:

10/2: Citadel - meh (first viewing)
10/3: American Mary - enjoyed it, I think. Not what I was expecting, but good, I think. (first viewing)
10/4: Halloween III: Season of the Witch - a classic and one of my faves
10/5: Psycho (1960) - is and will always be one of the greats!
10/6: Halloween (1978) - my favorite of them all, the 35th blu made me love it even more
10/7: Halloween II (1981) - not my favorite sequel in the series but enjoyable nonetheless
10/8: Halloween IV: Return of Michael Myers - probably my 2nd least favorite of the series, but it has Danielle Harris, cute even then
10/9: Halloween V: Revenge of Michael Myers - better than IV but not as good as VI
10/10: Halloween 6: Curse of Michael Myers - I enjoy this one. I put it behind the original and a close 3rd to H2O in the series. One of these days I'll pick up the producer's cut. I hear that's where it's at.
10/11: Halloween H2O - I kind of preferred the Thorn storyline but this is 2nd favorite in the franchise
10/11: Halloween: Resurrection - sad that they ended the original series on a low note, my least favorite of the original series
10/11: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) - it's been probably 20 years since I've seen it and it felt like a 1st time viewing. Really enjoyed it. Pretty twisted.
10/12: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 (1986) - I laughed...a lot. Was pretty stupid but I kind of liked it. Ending was a let down. (first viewing)
10/14: Hatchet -gruesome kills and blood and boobs within the 1st 5 minutes. Can't go wrong with that. (first viewing)
10/15: Hatchet II - holy gross kills Batman, enjoyed it (first viewing)
10/15: Hatchet III - pretty bad but had to see it, was glad that
[Show spoiler]Caroline Williams was killed, man she's annoying, thought the same about her in Texas Chainsaw 2
(first viewing)
10/16: Evil Dead (1981) - loved it even though it was silly in parts, and of all the horror movies I've seen the people in this were the dumbest acting by far (first viewing)
10/17: Evil Dead 2 - wasn't crazy about it but still not a bad flick (first viewing)
10/19: Insidious - kind of freaky but kind of tame, would have liked it more if were rated R (first viewing)
10/20: Psycho II - very fitting sequel, kept me wondering what was really going on (first viewing* - I may have seen an edited version on TV way back but I didn't remember any of it)
10/21: Paranormal Activity - still found it to be a little freaky, preferred it to Insidious, male lead was highly annoying
10/22: Paranormal Activity 2 - second verse, same as the first. I did enjoy the ending. Tied in nicely to the first one. (first viewing)
10/23: Paranormal Activity 3 - enjoyed this much more than PA 2, thought there were a lot more tense moments. If anybody can explain why there was a
[Show spoiler]Bad News Bears movie poster hanging up at the Grandma's house I'd love to hear that explanation.
(first viewing)
10/24: Carrie (2013) - I've seen but don't remember the original so hard to compare. I did enjoy it. Don't bully people. It won't end well. (first viewing)
10/25: Paranormal Activity 4 - These films are certainly good at building a tense moment. But been there, done that. A tick below-average for me. Maybe 2 ticks. (first viewing)
10/26: The Cabin in the Woods - really enjoy this movie, one of better horror flicks in recent years in my opinion
10/27: The Shining - A classic. Jack is freaking amazing in it. Shelley Duvall is terrible and at times makes it a little hard to watch.
10/28: Stake Land - one of the better blind buys I've ever picked up, well worth the $4.99. Great post apocalyptic vampire flick
10/29: Piranha 3D - that was bananas. So much blood. So many dead hotties. (first viewing)
10/30: The Exorcist - one of the greats, always a treat
10/31: Trick 'r Treat - I hadn't seen this but heard great things. I really enjoyed it. The perfect way to end this run. (first viewing)

I FINALLY got this in the mail, and just had to popped it in after all the trick-r-treater action dissipated:

Pretty decently-paced and intriguing thriller. It's pretty bright and colorful, and full of music, but the film is still damn creepy, thanks to the warped ideas the film plows through involving pagan fanaticism. The contrast is strong enough to be decently freaky.

And it looks alright on Blu-Ray. The package overall is awesome though, with three cuts of the movie and the soundtrack.

Not much to say other than it's a classic. A little slow at times, but overall great.

Just switched from US netflix to UK netflix, a lot better horror movies on the UK netflix... US netflix only got a lot of arthouse films, few new releases and really good scoring horror movies.

UK netflix got horror movies like Sinister, Drag me to Hell, Identity, The Others, The Strangers, etc.

Just watched Identity and really liked it .

Planning on watching Sinister tomorrow, heard a lot of good things about it .

Only way to end the month IMO:

Oct 31st - Halloween (1978)

Finished up with my favourite Horror movie of all time. An indisputable masterpiece! The phenomenal, ever-present that is John Carpenter's Halloween.

See ya next year folks! Happy Halloweeeeeen!

31 days of Halloween was great. I got side tracked with other films but I wanted to get one more horror film in. John Carpenter is The Horror Master. I loved how he made the vamps so hard to kill. James Woods is perfect casting. See you guys next Halloween season.

Oh why not, I have time for one more:

Yeah, the original is definitely better. I think because less is more; the original is shorter and has a simpler story, whereas they tried to make this version more complex by tying in the main character with the cultists directly. Above all though, the cult is so happy and benevolent in the first film that the real terror of it is that they never knew that they were evil to begin with; in this version, everything plays out so much like a standard horror film that the effect is totally lost. So, yeah, the remake looks pretty and all, but is rather weak.

10/29 - Teen Wolf
This is a fun movie and some cool werewolf effects. It's nice to have a comedy about werewolves. I wanna go car surfing now! I just wish there was more werewolf stuff.

10/29 - The Lost Boys
This a classic for me. Kiefer is really awesome in this and so was Jason Patric. The Corey's are really good too. The make up is cool but the effects are a little dated. I just love watching this during Halloween season.

10/30 - Monster Squad1/2
Speaking of another classic, I think this movie is really enjoyable and kinda gory for a kids movie. As a kid, I loved watching this movie and nothing has change since. I just wish it was longer so we can have more monster awesomeness.

10/30 - Trick 'r Treat1/2
Watched this for the first time last year and was so surprised at how good it was. I think this movie captures the essence of Halloween perfectly. Sam is awesome, the story is great and the acting is really good. The sequel is definitely at the top of my must-see list.

10/31 - The Shining
It's been a while since I watched this and I think it's really good horror but I wish there was more connection to Danny and his shining abilities like in the book. Jack was crazy good in this and so was the kid who played Danny. The atmosphere is creepy and makes me never want to stay in hotel in the snowy mountains.

10/31 - Halloween1/2
What can I say about John Carpenters classic that hasn't already been said? While not my favorite horror movie (or even slasher movie), it still creeps me out and that last half hour has me at the edge of my seat every time. It's like this time Laurie won't be able to get away from him in time to survive. It seems only fitting to have this be my closer.

Also Kudos! To everyone who participated in this years month long marathon and Congrats to those who made their goals. For me, 32 movies is a new high and the first time I reached the goal. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did and I can't wait till next year!!!

(*) - First time viewing

10/31/13

Halloween (2007)
For my final viewing I had to go with the only Halloween movie that I have that I hadn't watched yet this year. I've said it before, but I consider the Halloween remake one of my favorite of the remakes. I actually enjoy the origin story that is told about Michael. I just wish Zombie would have put that much effort into character development later on in the movie and showing Michael stalking the couples. However, the final chase scene is rather good.

But that wraps it up for me. I think I actually started this on September 25 and was able to get up to 44 movies. A whole lot more than I thought I had watched. Probably would have had more if not for starting a new job. Anyways, 'til next year.

"Oh, the horror!" this year:

[Show spoiler]9/25/13
The Evil Dead (1981)*
It was cheesy, it was gory and I loved every minute of it. Definitely worth all this wait that I have had to view it for the first time

9/28/13
Pumpkinhead
Not as good as I remember it, but still pretty decent. Hate that you didn't really get to see the kills. However, I did like the creature effects and the beginning of the movie was superb with a great performance by the always great Lance Henriksen.

9/29/13
Hatchet* 1/2
Really cheesy and over-the-top, but extremely gory and quite entertaining.

The Hills Have Eyes (2006) 1/2
One of the better remakes IMO. Does a good job with character development and makes you really care for the people. Not to mention, pretty bloody and glory for those kinds of people.

Puppet Master II*
Better than the first with a better storyline and better kills. Still a little too slow moving for my taste, but it was still quite entertaining. Got to mention the puppet, Torch, too. Through the first 2 movies, he's my favorite.

9/30/13
The Strangers 1/2
Maybe not as scary as I remember it being when I saw it in theaters. But it still very creepy and atmospheric.

My Bloody Valentine (2009)
Going back and watching this made me like it more than the first time I saw it in theaters. Still, it's not one of my favorite of the remakes. Does have a lot of good kills, just am torn between the "twist" ending (if that's what you want to call it).

Teen Wolf*
An enjoyable movie, but nothing great. Didn't mind the werewolf effects, just wish they would have showed more of Michael J. Fox's characters doing more werewolf-y things.

10/1/13
The Exorcist*
My first time ever seeing this one and, boy, was it...interesting. Maybe not really scary, but it's creepy as hell. Not to mention some great visual effects that I think really hold up well even to this day.

10/2/13
Shutter Island
Not a horror movie, per say, but it is still a pretty creepy and unsettling movie at times. Just an all-around very good movie.

Grave Encounters*
I really enjoy these found footage movies and this took me by surprise. It took a lot of good things and just ran with it. I can honestly admit I really scared during some parts of the movie.

10/3/13
Friday the 13th (1980)
Not necessarily my favorite of the originals, but definitely the best. Has a great level of suspense a good little twist at the ending for those select few who still haven't seen it.

10/4/13
Friday the 13th Part 2 1/2
A drop-off from the first movie. It's nice to see Jason, but I just find this entry boring compared to some of the others. There was too much time given (IMO) to recapping the first movie and while some of the kills in this one are decent, particularly
[Show spoiler]Jeff and Sandra
they just felt rushed. Part 2 isn't necessarily a bad movie, but is one of my least favorite of the sequels.

10/5/13
Friday the 13th Part 3 1/2
So much better than Part 2. I like the atmosphere better in this one and the characters more. Plus, it's always nice in this one to finally see the iconic Jason we all know and love.

The Thing (1982) 1/2
This is one of those movies that has gotten better each time that I've viewed it. Watching it tonight had it on the edge of my seat in anticipation even though I have seen it before. Just a great movie.

10/6/13
Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
Better than I remember it being the first time I watched it. All the characters are quite likable especially Tommy Jarvis played in this one by Corey Feldman. Doesn't hurt too that this entry has the most brutalest of kills out of the first four movies.

10/7/13

Final Destination
Really enjoy this movie. Just love the concept and the fact that there's never really a flesh and blood killer present. All the kills are also awesome with my personal favorite being Terry
[Show spoiler]getting hit by the bus
because it just comes out of nowhere.

Feast* 1/2
An interesting movie to say the least. Lots of blood and gore to go around. Just wish they could/would have shown the monsters a little more often as I think they looked great.

10/8/13

Creepshow* 1/2
Pretty cheesy at times, but it was still an entertaining movie. My favorite of the segments would probably be "They're Creeping Up on You!" and "The Crate".

10/9/13

Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning
I really did not enjoy this installment at all upon a 2nd viewing. Sure it has the biggest body count, but it was just a boring movie with boring kills.

Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island
Had to snatch this up when I found it on DVD at F.Y.E. and had to include it up here. After all these years, this remains my favorite of the animated Scooby-Doo movies. Just how dark it is compared to the other Scooby movies just makes it a fun little movie to watch.

The Others
Loses its impact a little after multiple viewings, but still a great haunted house movie that still had me on the edge of my seat watching it tonight. Not to mention, just love that twist ending.

10/11/13

Vacancy 1/2
An alright movie, but nothing special. Actually starts off quite well with how creepy it is, but then just drops off into the prototypical hide and seek movie.

The Descent
Creepy and even a little bit scary from the start. Beginning parts of the movie are the best and while there's kind of a drop-off in the overall atmosphere once the monsters show up, it doesn't make this less than a good movie.

10/13/13

Carrie (1976) 1/2
A pretty decent and enjoyable movie. Great build-up (even if it's a little slow in some parts) that leads to a very good final act.

10/14/13

Let Me In*
Such a good movie. Wasn't really a horror movie in the sense, but it had its moments of creepiness. Made better by the performances of its young actors Kodi Smit-McPhee and Chloë Grace Moretz.

The Thing (2011)
I seem to enjoy this movie a lot more than other people. I think this movie did a good job, at times, to paying homage to John Carpenter's original. This is especially true of some of the scenes with characters feeling untrust towards each other. Like many others, though, I hated how the creature was CGI in this movie.

Halloween (1978)
Definitely a classic. Can be a little slow moving at times, but I think that just adds to the atmosphere surrounding Michael and the way he stalks the teenagers.

Halloween II (1981) 1/2
A good follow-up to the original movie. I like how the story picks up right where the first movie left off. It was also pretty creepy in its own right and I thought some of Michael's kills were better in this one.

10/15/13

Scream
Boy, do I enjoy this movie every time I sit down to watch it. I just enjoy the fact that not only is it really funny at times, but it is really quite scary and intense at some points in the movie.

10/16/13

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers 1/2
A pretty good sequel. Is actually pretty scary at some points especially the parts involving Jamie interacting with Michael. Does slow down a little bit in the middle when they are at the sheriff's house, but that is made up with a very good chase scene at the end of the movie.

Sleepy Hollow
I used to watch this movie just for the decapitations, but going back after awhile and watching it made me realize that this movie actually has a decent story to go with it. I also love the atmosphere and the kills are definitely the best part of the movie.

10/17/13

Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers
Not my favorite of the sequels, but still decent. It was kind of boring and generic at times, but had an ending that I kind of really liked.

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers 1/2
I seem to enjoy this entry than most people. Even with its convoluted plot. I will say, though, it has some of the best kills of the first six movies.

10/18/13

Ghostbusters
One of the few movies that actually does a good job at mixing two genres. Not only is Ghostbusters creepy at some points, but it is insanely funny throughout.

10/21/13

A Perfect Getaway
Not a horror movie in the sense, but a pretty decent thriller. Some pretty strong performances especially by Steve Zahn and an ok twist of and ending. Even if it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

10/22/13

Misery
Such an intense movie. Just love the atmosphere of this one. Not much more can be said about how great Kathy Bates is in her role of Annie Wilkes.

10/25/13

Trick 'r Treat
One of those movies that has gotten better each time that I have watched it. I found it real enjoyable this time around. I just really like how the stories interspersed with each other.

10/28/13

Halloween H20: 20 Years Later 1/2
First time in awhile watching H20 tonight and I liked it a little bit more than I remember. Always liked how they brought Jamie Lee back and I like how the movie feels so confined. Makes it a bit more creepier. I just hate how fast the movie feels.

10/29/13

Halloween: Resurrection
Most definitely the worst of the Halloween sequels. Unlike most people I liked the concept of the reality internet show and thought it could've been a decent spin on the series. However, the movie just doesn't have much going for it. It's not scary, none of the characters are rather likable and we have Busta Rhymes doing "martial arts". I did, though, like some things. The beginning is pretty atmospheric as is when
[Show spoiler]Sara is trying to escape Michael with Deckard's help on her handheld
and
[Show spoiler]Jen's
death was pretty cool and funny.

The Mummy (1999)
It had actually been a long while since I've sat down and watched the first Mummy before tonight. But man, is it still a fun and entertaining movie. It has some good action pieces, is certainly funny in some parts and is genuinely scary and creepy in some parts.

10/30/13

The Mummy Returns 1/2
A pretty good and entertaining follow-up to the first movie. Has some great action scenes especially the final fight, some good laughs (though not as many as the first) and a few decent jump scares here and there.

Shutter (2008)
I've never seen the original, but I thought this one was decent. The characters aren't all that interesting. But the main thing I liked about this movie is the atmosphere. It has some genuinely creepy and scary moments in it.
