How long before Blu-ray takes the throne!

Unfortunately for Blu-ray, there is a mile-high wall of ignorance among the general population and I don't think it can ever be overcome. Folks just "don't get it" and, at this point, I doubt if they ever will.

For example...I was reading messages on a horror forum the other day and somebody mentioned a new Blu-ray being released. The first repsonse was, "I won't upgrade to Blu-ray because DVD is still more popular".

Now, those of here realise that such a response is completely non-sensical. The statement is fundamentally ridiculous.

Sadly, that's the problem. In order to extol the virtue of Blu-ray to others, they need to have at least minimum understanding of home video formats. And they dont...they just don't. You can't argue the merits of Blu-ray to people have no concept of home video quality. For most of the buying public, a disc is just a disc and if DVD is more popular then they are sticking with DVD and they have no capacity to grasp any other facts.

While most on this forum are Bluray geeks, the Bluray vs. DVD and surround sound etc, is just not a priority for the average joes out there.

They're worrying about their kids, jobs, next vacation. Everyone on this forum probably does as well but we also fit in Blurays but for the majority it's just not that big of a deal.

We, on this forum, can't understand why 'going full on bluray' is not a big deal to the mainstream, but it isn't.

dvds are killing bd right now. blu ray will be an option, but will never take over dvd.

I think sometimes it depends on the the type of title when we talk about new releases.

The Heat sold more overall and had a high percentage of DVDs sold and was the #1 seller.

Pacific Rim released the same week came in at #2 but it had a very high percentage of Blurays sold. The audience for the film knows that this type of film is made for bluray/flatscreen.

I think most places sold the Heat DVD for 15.99-17.99 and the combo pack for 22.99. This may account for the high DVD sales. prices dropped the 2nd week for the combo to 17.99 at Best Buy but you can see from first week prices that for only a few dollars more they can get the bluray and download code but for the average person it wasn't worth the extra dollars.

i see what youre saying. i thought gi joe 2 sold 500k combined but it was 500k each format. that shit movie sold over a million copies first week.

it's not like that at my "local" sam's club. they have lots of blus and probably about as many dvds. sure they could probably do away with the dvds and just go blu, but at least they have just about any title that is on dvd also on blu (if offered from the studio).

and they're good for getting just about all the digibooks.....which i love.

I see Best Buy pushing new titles at $24.99 for new titles in Blu-Ray 2D (Pacific Rim). With consumer confidence statistics in the dumpster, I don't get it.

Blu is still priced too high. When it gets down to DVD levels, it will triumph.

What would be a DVD level price - $15 for new release? I remember DVDs went for $17.99 sometimes back in the day and only the DVD.

Most of the big releases are combo packs [BD/DVD/Digital code] sometimes with bonus discs or download. You are getting much more for your money. Here's what I paid and remember there's also price reductions after the fact and price matches.

Here are some prices during the first few weeks of release:

Star Trek Into Darkness 3D target exclusive bluray bonus disc Release week: 27.99 reduced in 2 weeks to 19.99, target refunded me the difference

Star Trek into Darkness 2D combo w/Target bonus disc was 19.99 release day

Hansel & Gretel BD/DVD/iTunes code combo Target digipak w/ book: $13 [WOW!]

Iron Man BD/DVD/iTunes code combo - Walmart 19.96
Iron Man 3D BD w/3D/BD/DVD/iTunes code - Walmart 24.96
Target and Best Buy all price matched

Oz BD/DVD/iTunes code combo - Walmart 19.96

The Heat BD/DVD/Digital code - Reduced 2nd week by BB to 17.99, price matched at Target and I still got the Target bonus download

Pacific Rim BD/DVD/UV code - Walmart 19.96, 24.96 to get the Walmart bonus disc, I passed on the bonus disc for this title

G.I Joe Extended Version Best Buy Exclusive I believe was 19.99 but was released during upgrade and save and I traded in a DVD to get the 14.99 price and I got my dogtags too last week.

In addition there's great catalog pricing. Lots of great titles at $5 w/U&S and some just priced at $5
I want all the items in the combo pack and I'm glad they just don't offer Bluray standalone. I know some people on here would like that to get a lower price, but not me.

I still enjoy having the DVD and getting the iTunes code to watch on my I touch whenever I have to wait in lines.

So my point, the prices aren't that bad and if you are patient, some of the prices will be reduced during Black Friday. I am willing to pay a bit more to have it NOW. I don't see movies in the theaters anymore, so I factor the movie ticket price into the bluray I'm buying and I don't want to wait anymore to see the film since I've waited out the theater run. I'm willing to pay opening day prices because I no longer want to wait.

Anyone else on this forum love the combo packs? I don't dig the UV code [WB and Sony] but love the iTunes code.

I am constantly amazed at how little share of the market blu-ray still has. It is absolutely embarrasssing hen compared to how quickly DVD overtook VHS.
I myself rarely even buy DVDs anymore unless they are for a few dollors used and only buy new titles on Blu. I love my Blu but they never really have impressed me in terms of what I like (because Audio/visual) like how DVD did.

it seems like in the days of DVD a new super loaded special edition was announced every day or 2 and now we are lucky if we get one or 2 exciting titles announced per month.

Apples and oranges. With DVDs and VHS, it was digital vs. analog. With BDs and DVDs, it's digital vs. higher quality digital.
