Default Guillermo del Toro to direct the Hobbit movies

I might catch some flak for this since it doesn't relate directly to Blu Ray, except for the fact that it will eventually be on BD, but according to Variety Guillermo del Toro will be directing both Hobbit movies. I think everyone will agree this is a very nice selection for director, with Peter Jackson producing.

To somehow tie this to Blu Ray, does anyone anticipate that they'll attempt to release LOTR on Blu around the same time as the Hobbit?

You can post this stuff in the Movies and TV discussion, but you're new so it's ok. This sounds cool though...I really like Del Toro.

EDIT: Unless movies and tv doesn't show up on the main page.

I don't think they could have found a better director with PJ being so busy.

Agreed. Wicky most likely has a good guess on the LOTR release with this movie coming out....

This article strangely doesn't mention it at all but the Tolkien family has a lawsuit against New Line as well that could very well slow this project down again, if not stop it all together.

Apparently New Line has pretty much ripped off everyone they have come within ten feet of. I am in fact thinking about a lawsuit against New Line as well, just because I feel left out.

I think I am in love with Guillermo Del Toro. This guy is a genious. I don't care if he looks like an overweight Don Knotts. His movies are stunning. I also like M. Night Shamalayan, but he really is orbiting the outer solar system.

To say that I'm extremely excited about this is putting it mildly. I think that this is going to be an incredible journey, and I'm going to savor every delicious morsel of it.

The timing of the family lawsuit was very exacting. It's positioned for a quick settlement resolution. Basically a fast cash grab without too much in legal fees (I'm not saying they aren't owed, just the strategy)

Considering how much I HATED Pan's Labryinth, I don't see how this could be a good choice. That's just me. The only other movie that has angered me more than Pan's Labryinth is Crash. Normally I don't get so angered about movies. But for some reason both those movies really pissed me off.

Good news is that Peter Jackson is still involved as Executive Producer...and I heard WETA is still in on for the FX...

I don't have a link, sorry.

Glad to hear Jackson isn't directing it.

(Who needs another 3 hour film with eventual 4 hour super bloated version.)

I have the LotR theatrical and extended DVD's but prefer the theatrical cuts usually. I sort of like King Kong too but I would pay extra for an abridged version instead of extended if it was available. That Jackson fella does a lot right but his movies are too damn long.

Think you're in the minority on that one. Pan's has been pretty universally lauded as a fantastical adult fairy tale. Visuals and imagination are pretty much top notch. Even though you may not have liked the movie, I would think you'd be able to appreciate it from a visual standpoint. Have you ever seen Hellboy (and the soon-to-be-released Hellboy 2)? Both del Toro as well.

If you hate Hellboy then... I don't know what to tell you.

Del Toro is capable of getting more "human" performances out of his cast. My one complaint about the LotR trilogy is that the acting was somewhat wooden and the relationships between characters (which really made the books so special) were not paid off in the films. I think Del Toro, with Jackson in the production role, will hit a home run.

Instead we get 2 probably 2 1/2 hour movies out of a couple hundred pages so i dont see how that makes it any different. I think its really a stretch to make this into 2 movies. Take out most of the visual description and you only have a 2 hour screenplay.
