It can be reasonably argued that they are two halves of one film.

In the Top Films of the 1970s thread, I listed The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers as one film (but added an instruction for how to handle it if they had to be considered as separate films).

Of course, those two were actually shot as a single movie, and then the Salkinds divided it into two, like they did a few years later with Superman and Superman II.

I'm back in town, and I just saw my favorite movie of 2013 by a long mile.
Here's my review of All Is Lost.

In my review, I compared All Is Lost to the Robert Bresson film, A Man Escaped, because both are low-key survival films that rely heavily on sound effects and minimalist cinematic conventions. It also goes without saying that fans of the rugged, but understated Letter Never Sent will find a lot to enjoy in this new movie.

I also had the pleasure of watching Roman Polanski's Chinatown for the first time last night, since the Blu-ray (the 2012 edition complete with the booklet) was waiting for me in my mailbox when I arrived home. I could write for days about how much I enjoyed this neo-noir that stands well alongside the movies of the classic film noir era, but I am reviewed out after my above writeup. I would like to thank all of you for your recommendations and kind comments about this movie a few days back.

I pulled the trigger on the MoC edition of Sunrise from Amazon UK last night. Woo hoo!

I would've LOVED to have had some type of commentary on Letter Never Sent; explaining the shoot, the stunts etc. They are just mind blowing, no one does anything like that today. Today, when an actor does their own stunts, they jump 10 feet into an airbag or go back first through a thin sheet of sugar glass....

Glad you enjoyed Chinatown, great movie! The sequel isn't as good, but is still an enjoyable film. (Although saying it's not as good isn't exactly an insult)

OBVIOUSLY it's Louis C.K. with Pootie Tang, but I'll hear arguments for second place.

Man, I need to see this. I was a little weary of it due to how.. similar it sounds to Gravity, but I've heard way too many positive things recently to skip out on it. It opens here this weekend, along with Blue is the Warmest Color.

I caught 12 Years a Slave last Friday and I kind of walked out disappointed. It was well made, well acted (for the most part), and did about what I expected. My main problem was that I found the enablers to be characterized richer than the actual slaves. Nevertheless, I did like it, and it packs a visceral punch unlike any other of its kind.

I'm referring to the fact that it's never been a CC title unless I'm mistaken.

I had some custom artwork done when I had a member make me a case for Benjamen Button to match the other Criterion titles, if you notice Drive, Zodiac and Fargo are also in there. I wasn't making a statement about the quality of those particular films, just that I rather liked the artwork that member had done and I thought they would look sexy on my shelf.

Of course now Criterion is releasing Fantastic Mr. Fox anyways so I'll replace it with the official version when it releases.

Yeah I spotted a few out of place titles but that one jumped out at me the most.

I can't wait for his next movie, looks great!

I feel that way about Walken's character. Maybe the film has answers that happened to escape me upon first viewing. Hurt was in 3 scenes, I believe, and I'm not sure what his purpose was. I'm not sure the film can ever answer that for me now matter how many times I see it - certainly not in a black and white fashion and I fear not in an more abstract way either. If you have any theories, though, I'd love to hear them.

Some reviewers say that the Harvard scene was pointless. I see it as absolutely essential, however, so there you go...
The Harvard scene was the highlight for me pretty much. I loved the production design and costumes. Holy smokes! That opening 20 minute sequence alone would have been enough for me pretty much.

Whenever I get around to watching this movie again, and figure out Hurt and Walken's characters a bit more, I will post my thoughts, but for all I know, it might be weeks, months or even years. It might just take a long time for me to fully digest Heaven's Gate.

There definitely is something hidden beneath the surface though with these characters. It goes pretty deep I think. These characters are almost ghosts in a way.

Oh yes, absolutely yes. That was his one and only directorial effort after all. And what a hit it was! Imagine what could have been with Laughton had the critics not torn his film to shreds. He took it all very personally, probably just like Cimino did.

I watched "Gravity" last night and was blown away, this is not a movie, is an experience, wish Criterion will release it as they are doing with Frances Ha this movie deserves the Criterion treatment

Just watched La Notte, and what do you know!? I want to watch it again haha. If I honestly had no films left to watch, I more than likely would. I absolutely loved it.

I don't even know how to rank the Trilogy. L'Eclisse is definitely my favorite and while I enjoyed La Notte (as a whole) more than L'Avventura, I definitely loved the scenery and story more in L'Avventura.

I guess I'd rank it as this.
-L'Eclisse (1962)
-L'Avventura (1960)
-La Notte (1961)

It's a Warner Bros. title so there's no chance at that happening. Because it grossed so much at the box office, Warner Bros. is going to try to milk as much money they can with home video release exclusives and more.

I found a petition for Criterion to release Steve Zissou on Blu-ray. Idk if it would work but I guess give it a shot. Takes only a second of your time.
http://www.change.org/petitions/the-...zissou-blu-ray
Edit: Sorry if this is against any rules.
