UNCANNY.

I just watched Ivan's Childhood too... well, early this morning. I was visually impressed by so many shots in the movie and was surprised that the film wasn't as expressionistic as I thought it would be. It's a lovely film.

Agree with those except Crouching Tiger. The disc that's out is great, why would we need a Criterion for it?

Amazing film all around. I found it very expressionistic myself. Visually it is a sight to behold. He toned down considerably in his later films.

Still don't understand the lack of Marketa Lazarová love here. Nothing quite like it.

Now that Criterion and Sony are partnering up, this means there is a chance to see some big action films come out in the Criterion Collection!!!

I guess the folks at Criterion were reading this thread as I kept begging for more action/adventure films a few weeks back... well now it could be reality as Sony owns plenty of big blockbuster contemporary American action films! Yeeehawwww! (or Yippee-ki-yay, motherf****r!)

For those who know how is The Devil's Backbone say in comparison with Pans Labyrinth and Chronos?

I don't know... Sony has plenty of blockbuster titles in their collection. But this now makes it possible for Criterion to possibly release some Sony catalog titles that might also be blockbuster movies... Check the Sony catalog and I'm sure you'll see plenty of action movies that have yet to be released on blu-ray.

I think Pan's Labyrinth is the best of Del Toro's directed films (my favorite being The Orphanage, which he didn't personally direct). I think it's a bit better than Cronos, but it was still not as creepy as I had hoped for.

But how many good, thought provoking action films are there that Criterion would be willing to put out?

I don't think the Sony/ Criterion distribution deal doesn't really mean we are going to get some oddball titles or anything.

I think it will be business as usual. They are just a new distributor. Sony and Criterion licensing deals would be a whole other deal on a title to title basis.

however if it finally gets us a WS Troop Beverly Hill$ release then so be it lol

Side note I have been wanting to see la Notte foever! Always passed on that old OOP DVD and I think Monica Vitti to be one of the most beautiful women of that period. She was ultra modern IMO. I can't wait to finally watch this film!

My Del Toro top 5:

1. Pan's Labyrinth
2. The Devil's Backbone
3. Pacific Rim
4. Chronos
5. Mimic

The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth make a wonderful double feature.

But didn't you know?! "Thought-provoking" and "action" do not belong in the same sentence! There is a time to shut the brain off and be entertained and there is always a place for brainless, fun, entertaining, popcorn action films! All these cerebral Criterion movies can sometimes suck the joy out of life! Ha ha Just kidding.

There must be SOME "good" Sony action movies out there though. This definitely paves the way for any future possibilities. Hip hip hooray!

My wish for a Criterion/Sony disc would be Casualties of War. Criterion did a great job with Blow Out, and I'd like to see them tackle another Brian De Palma film.

Excellent choice! I keep forgetting Michael J. Fox was in that movie. A rarity in his career as it was his only "war" film I believe he ever starred in.

I love all those movies mentioned above by Owl, especially "Suburbia" (lost, great Richard Linklater film) but what other titles does Sony own that are major or classic movies?
Well, there's...

(a) A shïtload of Frank Capra titles, including It Happened One Night, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Lost Horizon, and Mr. Deeds Goes to Town

(b) A couple of terrific Howard Hawks titles: His Girl Friday and Only Angels Have Wings

(c) Several good Rita Hayworth films, such as You'll Never Get Rich and You Were Never Lovelier (both with Fred Astaire), and Gilda.

Plus various others, like All the King's Men, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Sahara, The Bedford Incident, Fail-Safe, Curse/Night of the Demon, First Men in the Moon, and Ship of Fools (which could use a better Blu-ray than the one from Mill Creek).

And that's not counting what's been released on Blu-ray already, by Sony themselves, Criterion, and Twilight Time.

It's also not counting the vast bulk of The Three Stooges' filmography.

If that last was meant as a clue, I hate to tell you, but the Die Hard movies are owned by Fox.

Man a Stooges' Criterion set would be great. Preaty sure some of them are being broadcast in HD on IFC.

Not as good as either of the other two, but still very much worth seeing.
