The 3D added very little for me too, but it didn't take anything away either. There were maybe a couple instances where I found myself especially pleased with the 3D. It didn't come off looking like a film that had been shot natively in 3D IMO (unlike Gravity, which wasn't shot 3D, and looks incredibly three dimensional. Go figure). Also, seeing it on a true IMAX screen felt unnecessary, since the film is only mastered in 2K. For the next two Hobbit films, I'll be seeing them in regular-sized theaters, but I'll probably give the 3D presentation another chance.

This set hasn't disappointed me whatsoever. The Appendices are just as phenomenal as the LOTR ones and it's wonderful seeing such an in depth look into one of my favorite movies of last year. The only thing that sucks is that my Black case was damaged.... But I'll get over it. The slipcover is beautiful too.

Overall I'm thrilled to own this and I can't wait to see Desolation of Smaug next month.

The 3D was gorgeous through the whole Gollum/Bilbo scene, and the scenes where Bilbo has the Ring on, and at Rivendell, otherwise it was pretty bland.

Agreed. There's also a nice 3D effect when the group is seen from overhead as they fly on the backs of the eagles.

The last one is just the Target theatrical release from last March

And does anyone have actual pictures of the statue out of the box? Trying to decide whether to spend the extra 40 bucks for the 3D Amazon Exclusive...

I watched just the movie last night, and I loved just about every new scene. Everything in Rivendell was perfect. I loved how a lot of the new scenes throughout the film featured the dwarves more.

I also LOVED the new Goblin King song, that was always one of my favorite songs from the Rankin-Bass Hobbit and I'm glad Peter Jackson's has a version in it now.

Someone must've bought this at Wal-Mart. So, again, as I asked and as Jumpman asked : Does anyone know why the Wal-Mart.com page says "Walmart Exclusive"? What is the exclusive?

P.S. For all posting pictures : Thanks, but you do know you can post more than 1 picture per post, right?

Posted this to Instagram while watching the bonus features:

While I was unsure of how the box would turn out, it really is a well designed slipcover. Great details like the embossing and inset image with a bit of a metallic sheen to it. I also liked the touch of the acorn on the back.

While the art does not match the LOTR EE's, the black blu-ray case really ties the two together, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the next two film's EE releases end up looking like. My guess is the 3D EE's will have Gandalf and Thorin, while the 2D releases will have new montages. Hopefully in 2015 they have a mail-away for a box to hold all three EE blurays that matches the LOTR EE. If not, I'm happy with the slipcovers. They're really nicely designed.

I almost considered getting the dvd release for this set just so it would match the LOTR dvd’s I already have…..but after opening up the 2d set….i’m really happy w/the packaging.

The black case was a nice touch but I really like the slipcover/box.

I bought it from Wal*Mart.
Only the DVD is Exclusive.
Has 2 Special Features that are on the Blu-Ray already.

If you don't want the 5-disc dvd or whatever it is, Walmart has an exclusive movie-only dvd edition with only a couple special features and a different cover (which I don't like).

Watched this last night with my roommates. The extended edition is worth it alone for the extra scenes in Rivendell, I loved every minute of the extra scenes there. It's gotten me so excited for Desolation of Smaug!

Thumbs up

A few months back I made a mock-up of a EE box for The Hobbit to match the LOTR blu-ray, and this morning I expanded the design to give a full box shot. Check it out!

Default Bestbuy.com price matching

I preferred to use my Best Buy gift card, but after spending 10 minutes just trying to talk to a person using Best Buy's simply TERRIBLE automated phone system, I'd rather just hand my money over to Amazon anyway.

I was able to call-in to best buy and price match the standard 3D (non-steelbook) version that they offer online over the phone. So YMMV. I just gave him the SKU from the bestbuy.com site (21760142) and the CSR looked it up, asked me the site that I wanted to price match, which was amazon. He confirmed the price match and placed the order.

I don't know if it was because I am an eliteplus member or if I just got a nice CSR but he accepted the SKU I gave him, price matched amazon's price, and took my order over the phone. So anyone who is holding out to get this version from Best Buy can still have a chance. One thing to note... If you are planning on using any of rewardzone points, be sure to have your certificate number on hand. They cannot pull points from your account over the phone.

The SKU at bestbuy.com for the standard 3D release is 21760142.
